<whitequark>
sb0: it's eagle yes. contracted, i see
<cr1901_modern>
I do not get why ppl use Eagle when DipTrace or KiCad exists
<cr1901_modern>
KiCad b/c well, it's open source, and DipTrace because it's easy to make parts and the free version has very reasonable restrictions
<cr1901_modern>
Oh, and if it's a contracted design, I'm going to assume they have access to Altium*, which is prob what everyone would use if they didn't treat the hobbyist community like shit.
<mithro>
Heyo, anyone here at the Chaos Communication Camp apart from me?

<whitequark>
Eagle is pretty stable and convenient
<whitequark>
kicad is hardly either
<cr1901_modern>
Which is why I use DipTrace :P
<whitequark>
is that windows-only or what
<cr1901_modern>
Linux too
<cr1901_modern>
oh and Mac
<cr1901_modern>
Do you like Eagle's UI? I didn't. I got halfway done with a project, before I found DipTrace. The schematic capture isn't that much better compared to Eagle, but making new parts is a cinch!
<whitequark>
I don't have many problems making Eagle parts...
<cr1901_modern>
Could be different UI experiences. Additionally, I'm guessing you either use a paid version or a "completely legal" free version?
<cr1901_modern>
In the free version of Eagle, I ran up against board dimension limits while making an ISA card with DIPs.
<cr1901_modern>
And IIRC, it wasn't possible to make a four-layer board, and only one sheet for schematic capture was allowed.
<whitequark>
free version had been enough so far
<cr1901_modern>
Ahh, that would explain it. If you don't have issues with Eagle's UI and the free version is enough, then don't switch. >>
<cr1901_modern>
My experiences have personally been that DipTrace is an all around better product with fewer restrictions and easier-to-learn. So if you make a design that requires more than Eagle allows, well, there's an option.
<cr1901_modern>
(I only say don't switch b/c it's "what you're used to", btw :P)
travis-ci has joined #m-labs

m-labs/artiq#405 (master - cf74cd0 : Yann Sionneau): The build has errored.
<rjo>
ysionneau, sb0: feel free to loose patience with joe...
<ysionneau>
hehe, at some point I can understand that he want the install steps to be as easy as possible
<ysionneau>
wants*
<ysionneau>
on my side my powerful dekstop machine runs Debian Jessie, which is - surprisingly enough for Debian - more up to date than Ubuntu LTS
<ysionneau>
compiling LLVM is a bit of a pain (takes time a RAM), I would rather not have to build it inside a VM ...
<ysionneau>
that would be painful
<ysionneau>
time and ram*
<whitequark>
"Ubuntu LTS" is basically "Ubuntu Debian stable", isn't it
<rjo>
don't follow his wild speculations and unfounded suggestions.
<rjo>
as i said. just use a chroot. that's native.
<whitequark>
sb0: ok, done with sel4. working on artiq for time being...
<ysionneau>
rjo: like I debootstrap an Ubuntu LTS and then chroot into it and build inside?
<ysionneau>
never done that
<ysionneau>
if you have some documentation about how to proceed :)
<whitequark>
ysionneau: you've pretty much described it
<rjo>
"more up to date" when comparing some debian stable and some ubuntu lts implies that the only correct version of a piece of software is the latest.
<ysionneau>
yes I just compared libstdc++6
<rjo>
ysionneau: yes.
<ysionneau>
ok will give this a try then!
<whitequark>
rjo: well, we use llvm. which implies that it does, for better or worse
<rjo>
yes. a bit of a special case.
<ysionneau>
thanks
<ysionneau>
for now, calling it a day!
<ysionneau>
++
<rjo>
ysionneau: see you.
<rjo>
whitequark: ubuntu release import from debian unstable. there is little correlation between debian stable and ubuntu lts.
<rjo>
or "lte" as joe calls it...
cr1901_modern has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<whitequark>
rjo: oh, i meant spiritually
<rjo>
whitequark: in that sense they are similar. except for the frequency.
