DocScrutinizer05: are you expecting finished devices before february next year?
<mvaenskae>
meaning in 1.5 months
<DocScrutinizer05>
finished devices? hardly. We're building proto_v2 currently
<DocScrutinizer05>
I hope to hold some of them in my hands before end of February
<mvaenskae>
alright, i am moving around the beginning of february and was sweating it a bit on what address i should supply in case you have stuff ready by then :)
<mvaenskae>
also thanks for the verification mail upon receiving my donation :)
<DocScrutinizer05>
next step after proto_v2 evaluation will be building of a proto_v3 which might count as final device already
<mvaenskae>
may i ask what you intend to do with the n900 devices supplied to you by mozilla? keeping them all in one piece or also salvaging some of them for parts?
<DocScrutinizer05>
thanks for mail goes to dos1, I'm not informed which mails got semt and when
xes has joined #neo900
<DocScrutinizer05>
(n900) depends on what's needed
<mvaenskae>
dos1: thanks for the verification :) i can sleep better at night knowing i can punch in numbers and letters :D
<mvaenskae>
DocScrutinizer05: i assume proto_v3 will be finished around june'ish?
<DocScrutinizer05>
currently expected ETA is around mid of next year, yes
<DocScrutinizer05>
if everything pans out right
<mvaenskae>
and if not i am fine with that as well :) take your time and make it a great product :)
<DocScrutinizer05>
that's what currently is happening: we do our very best to make proto_v2 the best prototype ever built. Seriously we try to get all bugs brushed out *before* we run a real board spin
<DocScrutinizer05>
in the end this will save us time and money
<mvaenskae>
if i could help in any way i would but alas, i am but a third semester IT student caught up in exam preparations :(
<DocScrutinizer05>
well, posting on tmo and sharing your thoughts about what you heard in here would already help to keep others up to date with what's going on
<DocScrutinizer05>
I'm too busy to also write nice "press info papers" or other news updates besides the engineering and accounting and running a company
<mvaenskae>
anyone asking me for a recommendation on a secure phone will get an immediate response of "neo900" ;)
<DocScrutinizer05>
that's fine of course :-)
<mvaenskae>
so there's that what i am doing, else i am not really active on tmo (in general i am not really suited for forum discussions somehow, maybe i should start setting up my mutt for daily mail digests) but i should start posting there as soon as the neo900 is then in our hands :)
<mvaenskae>
have we surpassed the 400 devices mark btw?
<DocScrutinizer05>
if you want to *help* you could start a poll in your class and check who got a LTE phone and if those are actually using LTE only (not UMTS) and how they handle SMS
<mvaenskae>
the semester is ending by next week and everyone will then scatter into the winds D:
<DocScrutinizer05>
we're pretty much exactly on 400
<mvaenskae>
what does lte have to do with sms btw?
<mvaenskae>
those are usually getting more use than sms these days anyways
<mvaenskae>
also android doesn't allow to explicitly set "connect only to 4g" just have it as preferred :/
<DocScrutinizer05>
my provider won't inform me about account charge-ups via whatsapp
<mvaenskae>
at least on my nexus 5 with lollipop
<DocScrutinizer05>
and my back won't send me TAN via whatsapp
<mvaenskae>
true, those cases need sms; i assumed it was more a question on personal stuff :)
<DocScrutinizer05>
yeah, common practice is to do phonecalls via UMTS or GSM still, since LTE often doesn't support genuine voice calls (yet) - aka VoLTE
<DocScrutinizer05>
our LTE modem is prepared for VoLTE, but has no SMS support at all it seems
<mvaenskae>
i believe most cells these days are dual-band in terms of having a 3g connection active AND a 4g connection if possible
<mvaenskae>
i think i won't opt for lte, it misses too many bands for me :/
<DocScrutinizer05>
yes, fallback-for-call is what they all do today
<DocScrutinizer05>
actually when I had to choose, I'd also probably opt for PXS8
<DocScrutinizer05>
not for PLS8
<mvaenskae>
i want to use it world-wide and really don't mind the "slower" speeds (i never get the magical 100mbit/s anyways as that costs about 150sfr per month... nah, not gonna pay that)
<DocScrutinizer05>
when PXS8 is the Porsche SUV, then PLS8 is the Ferrari with 240Mph max speed and 30mm ground clearance
<mvaenskae>
and we never know how well the street conditions are :)
<mvaenskae>
migt just rip up out ferrari from below :D
<DocScrutinizer05>
right, that's my general approach. I usually don't need the LTE speed anyway
<mvaenskae>
5g is already in the making anyways
<DocScrutinizer05>
o.O
<DocScrutinizer05>
thought they planned LTE for Long Term Evolution
<mvaenskae>
well, it is under r&d
<DocScrutinizer05>
maybe somebody coined 25G" for LTE+
<DocScrutinizer05>
err "5G"
<mvaenskae>
well, wikipedia gives it a 2020s release
<mvaenskae>
that's pretty soonish i feel
<mvaenskae>
2014 was a quick year D:
paulk-aldrin has quit [Quit: Quitte]
<DocScrutinizer05>
german wikipedia has not a single decent info about "5G"
<DocScrutinizer05>
It's probably identical with LTE+
<mvaenskae>
well, research and stuff; i wonder why people even think about it when half the world doesn't properly use 4g
<DocScrutinizer05>
LTE(+) currently sells with 100MBit/s downlink (German T-Mobile) and could see beef-ups to 1Gbit/s
<mvaenskae>
with ranges of about 10m per cell-tower \o/
<DocScrutinizer05>
sth like that, yes ;-P
<DocScrutinizer05>
I just ran a test of my N900 UMTS aka 3.5G and got a bandwidth of 2Mbit/s DL, depending on "right" placement and orientation of the device (incl antenna)
<mvaenskae>
tmobile?
<DocScrutinizer05>
O2
<mvaenskae>
3.5 is 21.something, right?
<DocScrutinizer05>
no idea
<DocScrutinizer05>
I think they advertise a 7.xMbit/s DL
<mvaenskae>
all theoretical obviously and UP TO ;)
<DocScrutinizer05>
sure
<DocScrutinizer05>
their current magic limits are 3.6Mb/s and 7.2Mb/s for UMTS, and 21Mb/s and 50Mb/s for LTE
<DocScrutinizer05>
also some guy from a carrier told me the BTS often have a normal DSL line for all data, which means the complete BTS cannot provide more than a 16 or maybe (VDSL) 50 or 100Mb/s total for all clients
<DocScrutinizer05>
eNodeB?
<DocScrutinizer05>
the tower with the antenna ;-)
<DocScrutinizer05>
sort of similar to the 60mm^2 power cable for fanatics' high end audio amp, when the wires in the wall before the outlet have a 1.5mm^2 only
<bencoh>
indeed, they often end up with dsl uplinks
<DocScrutinizer05>
will for sure make a hell of a difference when after 40m of 1.5mm^2 NYM you make the last 1m with a 60mm^2 power cord for 700€
<DocScrutinizer05>
prolly 100% homeopathy ;-)
<DocScrutinizer05>
I eventually should check what's the RAM bus bandwidth of the usual contemporary embedded SoC CPU
<mvaenskae>
let's not forget ram and storage as well :)
<mvaenskae>
no need for gbit if the emmc can only write with 10mbit/s
<mvaenskae>
well, i am gonna go ~, see you around :)

They've begun trying to collect specs for what 5G should be able to do
<ShadowJK>
but it wont matter, when LTE-A arrives someone will call it 5G
<ds2>
stream 4K uncompressed video :D
<ShadowJK>
that'd be possible in the "fibre + leds" version
<ShadowJK>
i.e. you have optic fibre everywhere, and devices covered in leds to communicate wirelessly
<ShadowJK>
.. which seems to be one thing (of many) dubbed as 5g :)
