Joerg-Neo900: ?
* Oksana
wonders about power consumption of ARM Cortex-A8 : when idle/asleep, when busy/an app using 100% CPU - and whether ARM made more power-efficient cores since then

brolin_empey: sorry
<Joerg-Neo900>
Oksana: what? power consumption of the SoC?
<Oksana>
About, yes. just looking into the topic [since other power consumers are display, speakers, DAC/ADC, modem/wireless...]
* Oksana
doesn't expect Intel or anybody else to be better than ARM at power efficiency

<esbjerg>
does anyone know if it will be possible to de-solder the microphone and perhaps the camera on the neo900?
<atk>
everything is possible if you have the tools
<atk>
it would be a shit phone without a microphone though
<esbjerg>
I would use a headset
<atk>
right
<esbjerg>
it came during a discussion on a hacker festival
<esbjerg>
quite a few there de-solder microphones etc.
<esbjerg>
we also discussed whether it would be possible to have speakers which can only play sound
<atk>
I don't think so
<atk>
but you can make your audio circuitry not-overengineered enough so that it's impossible to use them as a microphone without hardware modification
<esbjerg>
which would be very nice

esbjerg: I think you missed a few elementary design details of GTA01/02/04 N900 and Neo900. I can't see any reason to desolder microphone except when the details of neo900.org/stuff/cccamp15/ccc2015talk/talk.pdf#19 to #21 are not understood at all
<DocScrutinizer05>
same with camera: when you don't trust your own linux system you wrote, compiled and installed, then why would you want to use such system at all, let alone why bother about camera in such system?
illwieckz has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
<DocScrutinizer05>
in Neo900 we follow the approach that allows user to 100% unspoofably tell if camera is powered or not, just in case you managed to actually install code you don't know what it does and it goes rogue and enables camera (or phone, or mic whatever) without your explicit consent. This gets done by LEDs you can't block shining when the subsystem is powered up

<DocScrutinizer05>
when you want to strip down features you're afraid you can't control, why not use a featurephone right away?

<DocScrutinizer05>
just to make more clear: we're using digital mics that have a data-out line and a Vcc supply voltage input which is controlled and can't get powered up without user noticing the fact
<DocScrutinizer05>
without voltage supply the mics don't work
<DocScrutinizer05>
same applies for camera, obviously
<DocScrutinizer05>
and do you unsolder the beeper speaker of your linux PC? why not? with nifty software and crappy hardware it *could* get turned unto a microphone
<DocScrutinizer05>
prolly you just trust your linux to not have such kernel drivers installed that would possibly accomplish that trick
<DocScrutinizer05>
when you can't trust your own linux system to not do rogue stuff, you better don't use any such system at all. I wouldn't

I don't think I will ever be able to control all hardware and software - even if I have access to all the code and produce all the hardware myself
<esbjerg>
so I consider all electronics to be compromised in some fashion - and try to minimize the attack vectors which I find are the worst
