ZombieChicken: If you mean unintentional mangling, I'd say unifying newline style is acceptable and deleting trailing blanks is a reasonable default, but must have an option or command to suppress it.

jcowan: Right now it's doing some really weird shit. I loaded a CRLF file and wrote it back out and not only did it change the input from CRLF to just LF, it slapped a BOM at the start of the file that was never there to start with. However, when I changed the format of the previous file to just LF lineendings, it seems to work.

I think both of those changes are Just Wrong. I was talking about a case in which some line ends are CR, some LF, some CRLF, some CRCRLF, or whatever. Pick one and rationalize to it.
