gb_master, rk loader behaves different then uboot. With beaglebone you can format your SD with some partitons and throw in, kernel, dtb, initramfs and have rootfs on the second partiton.

RK Loader works with images and therefore needs the first part of the memory filles with these images. The rootfs can still be a normal partiton and you can mount it easy on your PC.

But it should not be that difficult... If the kernel boots up, you should be able to get any linux flavor going you like

It is hard to guess, where it breaks, if you do not see what it does

But if you flash an update.img, it should boot.

The update.img should contain everything including the loader.

So try again with one of the linux images

Then check if you can boot gentoo by just exchanging the rootfs
