<xia0ben>
Hi fadelkon !
<fadelkon[m]>
I'm afraid I can't help you much with the package
<fadelkon[m]>
just a humble admin ^^
<xia0ben>
Oh
<xia0ben>
But thanks anyway for answering
<xia0ben>
I was starting to think there was no one on this chan
<xia0ben>
^^
<xia0ben>
Should I copy-paste my request and send it to the mailing-list ?
<fadelkon[m]>
there is, but I guess you must get an american evening timing
<fadelkon[m]>
to have more odds to find some dev
<xia0ben>
Yeah I guess
<xia0ben>
Since I'm Europeean

<lava22>
Hi all! Where can I find in the docs or wiki or forum where it explains how to get my public ID that needs to go into the DNS TXT record? I have looked and looked, and couldn't find any conclusive information.... :-/
<xia0ben>
Hi lava22
<lava22>
Hi :-)
<xia0ben>
Hum, I don't quite get what you mean
<xia0ben>
Are you trying to setup the server on your own machine ?
<lava22>
I get "No such grain for public ID" when I try to access my self hosted domain on its public DNS
<lava22>
Yes
<lava22>
Before that it said that I'm missing a TXT record... which I added, but I don't know what to put in the TXT record...
<xia0ben>
Ah
<xia0ben>
you mean you are trying to publish a website through sandstorm
<xia0ben>
?
<fadelkon[m]>
oh yes
<fadelkon[m]>
I saw that on wordpress app
<xia0ben>
Oh
<xia0ben>
ok
<lava22>
I am just trying to access my own installation using something other than local.sandstorm.io :-)
<fadelkon[m]>
just create a wordpress grain and you will see the instructions
<fadelkon[m]>
for instance¿
<lava22>
It seems just updating the conf isn't enough... or maybe I didn't restart it properly?
<fadelkon[m]>
I never access it through another domain
<xia0ben>
Well if you followed the instructions correctly
<xia0ben>
it should work
<xia0ben>
but it takes a little bit of time
<lava22>
Well, I'd like anyone to be able to access it.... most of the instructions refer to the setup procedure
<lava22>
But I did that a long time ago and have a lot running there, not sure how to do that without losing my data
<lava22>
(I currently access it via an SSH tunnel and forwarding)
<fadelkon[m]>
So, maybe you want to register a new sandcats subdomain?
<lava22>
Just looking for the simplest way to make my installation web-accessible. It's installed on a dedicated server with a public IP address and DNS points towards it...
<lava22>
I presume sandcats would be hosted - or is it a dynamic DNS solution?
<lava22>
Or is it an integral part of Sandstorm?
<lava22>
That needs to be set up even for self-hosted installations?
<xia0ben>
So,
<xia0ben>
For self-hosted installation
<lava22>
I see a lot of people in the logs and issues pages asking the same questions... but no answers... would also like to help to update the docs, wiki etc. to clear up the confusion to remove all that clutter :-)
<fadelkon[m]>
no, you can live without sandcats. But it's really useful what it provides. So it gives you for free a subdomain (with dynamic dns solution) and a wildcard TLS certificate, that sandstorm needs and you can't find costless anywhere else
<xia0ben>
it is highly recommended to use a .sandcats.io domain
<xia0ben>
Since the setup is automatized and painless
<lava22>
Very happy doing so...
<xia0ben>
And at the moment, it is the only way to get HTTPS with wildcard DNS working
<lava22>
If I can without losing existing data, or if there's an easy way to back it up and import it again
<lava22>
Ah, that also sounds super useful
<xia0ben>
without paying tons of money to get your own ssl certificate
<fadelkon[m]>
> And at the moment, it is the only way to get HTTPS with wildcard DNS working
<fadelkon[m]>
well, you can generate your own CA and do a self-signed
<fadelkon[m]>
or even, you can apply to cacert.org
<xia0ben>
ah yes
<xia0ben>
forgot about that
<xia0ben>
But as for migrating
<lava22>
... yes but a wildcard cert costs more ... and Letsencrypt doesn't hand out those (do they?)
<fadelkon[m]>
they are a community CA that signs other certs.
<xia0ben>
which is more what you're looking for =)
<xia0ben>
These instructions are for sandstorm general setup
<xia0ben>
But for static publishing
<fadelkon[m]>
Regarding the migration thing, you can re-run the `sandstorm-setup.sh` or whatever is it called, and there ask for a sandcats name. It will not overwrite your data as far as I remember
<lava22>
Where do I get the name? Or is that only available via the install.sh - ie. I have to do a new install, and then migrate my data?
<lava22>
Ok... :-) Lol, "too user friendly"... never thought I would come across something like that!
<lava22>
Perhaps it should be said at the top of the above two pages that this can only be obtained upon installation, and for an existing installation point to instructions on data migration?
<fadelkon[m]>
you really don't migrate anything
<lava22>
I think that would eliminate a whole lot of support logs...
<xia0ben>
True
<xia0ben>
But as fadelkon said, simply rerun `sandstorm-setup.sh`, and should prompt you to choose a sandcats.io domain
<xia0ben>
Without needing you to migrate anything
<fadelkon[m]>
And if you find that it's a usual issue, you could write a paragraph telling it :)
<lava22>
Hmm... not finding sandstorm-setup.sh anywhere... or setup.sh or install.sh, not on the filesystem... possible it could've been deleted?
