I found Radicale to be too buggy to rely on personally, yes.
<ocdtrekkie>
I ended up realizing I wanted my calendar and contacts to live with my email as well. I'm not sure there's a convincing reason to separate them at this time.
<TimMc>
Hah, yeah, I guess I shouldn't be surprised by any weird behavior out of Google software.
<TimMc>
I put a Radicale ICS calendar subscription into Thunderbird and created an event in Thunderbird. It promptly showed up in Radicale.
<TimMc>
But then when I opened the event in Radicale, it wouldn't *close* again, and then when I came back later... it had disappeared. D-:
<TimMc>
(which might be a result of clicking "publish calendar" in Thunderbird before Thunderbird had learned about the even it itself had created in Radicale but uh... yikes)

Personally, I'm good letting a "friendly" web server be the store of record for my info, as long as it can be locally backed up.
<ocdtrekkie>
My hope is perhaps that if Kenton gets mail on Sandstorm up to par, strong contact and calendar support will come with it.
<TimMc>
This version of Radicale is *really* old, I guess. 1.1.1 vs. 2.1.8.
<ocdtrekkie>
(Though I am currently quite infatuated with FastMail, it would be hard to leave. I have the sort of reckless <3 for this team I used to have for Google.)
<ocdtrekkie>
The main difference though is that my email address is a domain of my own, and as I transition away from Google-proprietary design such as labels to IMAP-standard folders, I am in a position that future transitions of email to other places should be much more seamless. The lock-in is gone.
<TimMc>
Fastmail is great. But I use Claws, a desktop client, to access my mail.
<TimMc>
Same here re: domains. Was on Cotse before Fastmail, and before that on Google Mail.
<ocdtrekkie>
I'm pretty happy with web clients, though I've been using Outlook to migrate emails gradually over from Gmail, and maintain a local backup of both.
<ocdtrekkie>
Of course, crossing fingers until I inevitably corrupt the OST, because that's what happens when you use Outlook for things.

I briefly contemplated seeing if I could package a newer version of Radicale but I *really* don't need another yak to shave. :-P
<ocdtrekkie>
Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are interested in updated versions of the packages, but very few people have the time or drive to generate them. :/
