<balrog> has anyone played with the early Altera MAX CPLDs?
<balrog> I have here two EPM7032LC44s, from two of the same device. One was overvoltaged, and my programmer identifies it as a "plain" EPM7032 instead of a EPM7032LC44.
<balrog> The device which was overvoltaged has a startup problem (doesn't boot reliably)
<balrog> rqou: I found your twitter thread about pof2jed... kinda interesting
<whitequark[m]> (which one?)
<balrog> whitequark: which thread?
<whitequark[m]> yeah
<balrog> the one about enabling debug logging
<balrog> also, Intel has yanked all the older versions of Quartus II that support these chips :<
<rvense> i have version 9 for linux
<rvense> i bought a board with an epm7128 recently, and a usb blaster, but quartus 9 doesn't see teh usb blaster so i'm not sure how to use it
<rvense> ... at least i think that's the same series as the epm7032, just a different size, right?
mumptai has quit [Quit: Verlassend]
<whitequark[m]> balrog: got a link?
<balrog> rvense: did you install the usb blaster driver manually?
<balrog> you probably want the driver that comes with the latest quartus since it's properly signed
<balrog> older ones are not properly signed
<balrog> unless this is linux
<balrog> the usb blaster (first version) is "just" a relabeled ft232
<balrog> whitequark: link to thread?
<rvense> balrog: this is linux
<rvense> balrog: i think it's just looking for vid/pid?
<rvense> i can see it from openocd and tried playing an svf i got quartus to output, but it was all errors and barely know what an svf is
<rvense> hm, but those just set the permissions on the device node, don't they? i just do that manually
<rvense> actually, that seems more like it
<rvense> i had to move some libraries around to get quartus launch
<balrog> hah.
<rvense> i don't know how old version 9 is
<rvense> i downloaded it from intel just before they removed the old downloads
<balrog> I believe the latest for this chip series would be 9.1sp2
<balrog> any chance someone has a copy of ftp.altera.com? digshadow ^
<rvense> i have the installer for that
<rvense> for linux
<cr1901_modern> Observation: Altera/Intel is popular for hobbyist FPGA projects (domesday86, MiSTer), even though (can't imagine why :P) Lattice is popular in openfpga-land. But seems like there is a notable dearth of arching Altera software.
<cr1901_modern> archiving*
<balrog> It would be nice if people would upload what they have to archive.org... if you're afraid about copyright strikes please make a new IA account
<cr1901_modern> Actually I should probably say the "Terasic DE10-Nano is popular" :D
<balrog> Altera was popular mainly because 1. Quartus has a lighter footprint than Xilinx tools, and historically was less buggy than ISE. 2. Terasic sells dev boards to the general public below cost, while Digilent charges much more unless you're a student.
<balrog> Lattice wasn't popular because their tools weren't particularly good
<etrig> this is what I have locally: https://vx.si/fpga/files.txt
<etrig> also some isos for quartus 7.0 and 7.2
<cr1901_modern> Observation #2: None of the vendor tools have good reputations, except by people who use FPGAs that are much larger than what the free tools currently target (oh and better ILA support I guess).

<kc8apf> balrog: I have Quartus II 1.1, 4.0, 4.2, 9.0, 12.1, 14.1, 16.1, and 17.1 as well as MAX+PLUS II 9.1
<kc8apf> of note, Quartus Prime Pro 20.1 full installer is 65GB
<balrog> yep, but webpack is MUCH smaller
<balrog> or if you don't need all the chips
<balrog> while Vivado's minimum install is about 2-3x the size of Quartus
<kc8apf> for an archive.........
<balrog> ahhh... right. :(
<kc8apf> I did work out how to query Intel's webservice to get a direct Akami download link for a Quartus II installer
<kc8apf> so I'm grabbing everything they currently have
fibmod has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<etrig> nice, I just jotted down all the version and build numbers and the locations were mostly predictable
fibmod has joined ##openfpga
<balrog> and yeah it seems that intel just deleted a lot of stuff from the akamai service
<etrig> really too bad the pre-13.0 files were really removed from the cdn
<etrig> so much lost after the altera acquisition
<etrig> good luck finding info about nios
<balrog> oh shit:
<balrog> ftp://ftp.intel.de/Pub/fpgaup/pub
<balrog> don't know how much is here but there's *some*

pointfree has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<balrog> kc8apf: yeah unfortunately
<balrog> btw, this means that web edition for Cyclone II is no longer available
<kc8apf> I'm finding some pre-Akami files. Obviously something went wrong in the migration of Altera's website into Intel's. Some files are missing. Some have case sensitivity errors.

<etrig> I encountered a lot of that while scavenging max+plus downloads before they also disappeared
<kc8apf> finding a few more quartus installers and service packs on fpgadownload.intel.com
<etrig> kc8apf: are you guessing at file names there?
<kc8apf> Yup
<etrig> kc8apf: I found this list somewhere recently if you think it might help: https://vx.si/fpga/dl.txt
