<lunra>
your kernel will need to be recompiled to look for the USB drive
<lunra>
(yes, I realise that is for the beagle/etc -- should apply here, too)
<lunra>
scratch that. It'll need the root= argument passed to it somehow, which is possible with some other u-boot setting iirc
<xenoxaos>
bootargs
<lunra>
yep
<lunra>
setenv bootargs root=/dev/ ... hmm, what would a flash drive be? /dev/sda?
<xenoxaos>
most likely
<lunra>
I'm actually saying all this blind, I'm still waiting for my cubieboard to arrive ;)
<lunra>
(sorry!)
<xenoxaos>
oh
<lunra>
anyone know if it's okay to use a serial adapter that seems to use 5V levels?
<xenoxaos>
i wouldnt
<maciel310>
haha no problem at all, thanks for the info! I'm not in front of my cubie right now so I can't test it out yet, but I'll report back in an hour or so with the results
<xenoxaos>
but you can do whatever you want

<lunra>
Well, any idea if the Rx pin is 5V tolerant?
<lunra>
maaaybe that's in the datasheet, I'll look ;)
<xenoxaos>
probably not
<maciel310>
based on what I've seen I believe it is, so long as you don't connect the VCC line. Several of the serial guides reference not connecting that pin in case it is 5v
<maciel310>
mine has both 3.3v and 5v supplies tho, so not sure what my rx/tx levels are
<maciel310>
I'd assume if you have an adapter that just has a 5v vcc that its data lines would be 5v as well
<lunra>
That's what I'm thinking...
<lunra>
Maybe I should just spend the extra money on making another shopify order. What I did was only look at the 'recent products' list, and didn't realise that the serial cable was indeed available >_>
<xenoxaos>
i have multiple 5v, 3v3, 1v8 serial adapters
<maciel310>
yeah I probably wouldn't risk it myself. suck to brick a $60 computer to avoid having to buy a $5 part
<lunra>
Yeah. The thing that makes me not want to order again is the $10 shipping for that $5 part XD
<maciel310>
no problem. ebay is usually the first place I go for simple parts like that. not always the highest quality there is but definitely save a few bucks especially on shipping
<lunra>
I've found ebay to be a lot of trouble in the past, so I usually go to dx.com, heh. But I can't tell with their USB serial devices whether they're 3v3, even if they do provide 3v3 power lines and are PL2303 just like the cubieboard serial adapter

I guess, being $3, there's not much to lose :D
<maciel310>
yeah, unfortunately hard to tell based on the listing. I was directed to that line of serial adapters for another 3v3 board, and I haven't fried my cubie yet so should be fine haha

thanks again for the info lunra. I'm off to give it a shot, I'll make sure to come back and update on my progress if I get it working.
<iliketomake>
Hi all, I just ordered my cubieboard!
<iliketomake>
Every time I think its name I thinks cutieboard instead.
<iliketomake>
Strange
<iliketomake>
Oh and I also order the case and one of those Motorola Atrix Laptop docks

hi all, generating a livesuit image somehow fails here, after flashing onto the device the serial console says "c:\linux\linux.ini not found" and finally "No OS to boot"
<shineworld>
- with nano or other editor change DEV=/dev/sdX to your SD device name
<shineworld>
- with nano or other editor change BUILD_PATH=/home/shine/android/build/openbox/out/target/product/cubieboard to meet your android build out path
<shineworld>
- in support put your script.bin (there are mine at moment)
<shineworld>
- run all with ./cubiecard.sh

in partitions.txt you can edit your partition sizes for /data /system etc
<mtr>
shineworld: cool, straightforw3ard, many thanks
<shineworld>
I've do it for a 4GB card (I'm using a 8GB)
<shineworld>
sorry if script isn't so good, I'm on *nix world by some months after 23 years of Windows programming
<shineworld>
where script are totally unknowed matter :)
<shineworld>
first time could be interesting you run manually each command to learn what do and how work
<mtr>
your script looks good, fairly simple when one knows where to place which .bin file
<mtr>
I wonder what these livesuit and pack tools are doing, looks like emulating an ancient 16 bit dos boot environment...

I don't know, I've saw c:\... bla bla bla during pack-cmd.sh but is terribly ugly to read how script for me
<mtr>
+1
<shineworld>
however I can run it on my openbox and put it somewhere so you can try it
<shineworld>
I've a build with almost all original (some modules was added)
<shineworld>
I can catch the script output so you can match with your
<shineworld>
just time to do a repo-status and watch all modifications ...
<shineworld>
mtr, I'm pushing a build.log + img to dropbox if you would to try

just time to download, I've a very slow net (like all in my f...ed country)
<mtr>
shineworld: the pack-cm.sh build.log would be interesting, just to see if there are differences which might give a clue whats wrong with my packed image
<shineworld>
34mins left...
<shineworld>
damn 34mins to upload 300Mb... poor Italy
<mtr>
np, I'll try later, my link is horrible slow as well...

me too... the only fast ways is WiMax of to be lucky to live near some fiber served place but is very expensive
<shineworld>
at moment the img file is downloading so you can't see it yet
<shineworld>
differences by repo on github:
<shineworld>
- compiled with touchscreen module (resistive)
<shineworld>
- enabled full compilation of TSCalibration2
<shineworld>
- modified DisplayManager so it put in log any function calls (I'm trying to solve a bug) don't matter for your test because use of DisplayManager and related log are rare
<mtr>
my changes are related to the wifi driver, I rebuild the kernel to include the rt2x00 modules
<shineworld>
wow I need that
<shineworld>
have you the cubieboard_defconfig ?
<shineworld>
I would like to use a Ralink USB wifi key from asus
<mtr>
did not do much with android yet, seems the config needs still some tweeks...
<shineworld>
I've tried to enable rt2x00 but not worked
<shineworld>
have you god good results ? works ?
<mtr>
basically yes, the rt2x00usb and rt2x00lib modules are included in the image
<shineworld>
My usb key is an ASUSTEK USBN53 which use rt2x00 modules (I've catch then sniffing what does linux when inserted on USB)
Martix has joined #cubieboard
<mtr>
android tries to load rt2x00usb, which fails because of dependendies to rt2x00lib.lo
<shineworld>
so... what have you do to fix all ?
<mtr>
that's what I saw scrolling by on the serial console a few minutes ago
<shineworld>
I'm noob in some questions...
<shineworld>
ah you haven't fixed yet
<mtr>
no, module loading needs to be fixed first, there might be other issues later then...
<shineworld>
when you will be able to run wifi can you write 2 lines of how-to ?
<mtr>
yes, sure
<mtr>
I can't continue now, have to look into this later/next days
<shineworld>
you have my email-address on private chat
<shineworld>
thank you

<StMichel>
It'd be better if you posted your outcomes on the mailing list or cubieforum; I believe there are many people with the same problem
<StMichel>
I noticed also that the rt2x00 modules were missing, but because I could not get a cross-compiling environment to work and didn't bother to compile kernel on cubie, I left the matter due to other hurries
<StMichel>
So it would be great if you are willing to share your results commonly
<shineworld>
I've compiled them and obtained the modules but there is something wrong on android and they don't run fine
<shineworld>
Or I've mistake something...
<shineworld>
Unfortunately I can't, at this moment, spend time to that because I've another big issue:
<shineworld>
- openbox don't rotate display to portrait in any way
<shineworld>
I've tried any mode : manifest, with activity code... the view remain ALWAYS in landscape
<shineworld>
I wasn't able yet to find why, also watching in sources and comparing them with AOSP
<shineworld>
I'm a beginner so much of matter in code is mystery...
<StMichel>
Heh, same here.
<shineworld>
My boss "require" that display switch to portrait but I don't know "how" to fix that
<shineworld>
I guess is something on SurfaceView... but is only a "guess"
