<devyn> ELLIOTTCABLE: I know it's not even remotely the same thing but what you said reminded me of WordPress's URL typo corrector thing
<devyn> ELLIOTTCABLE: it's really dumb. it tries to find close matches or something but sometimes it doesn't even make sense
<devyn> and it just redirects; it doesn't even 404 with suggestions
<devyn> or anything
eligrey has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<glowcoil> devyn: oh god
<glowcoil> when would that be desired behavior
<devyn> glowcoil: idk, WP is all kinds of fucked up and I work with it almost every day :\
<devyn> WP is probably the most modern "traditional PHP" app/framework I know of
<devyn> in that
<devyn> there's no MVC or anything
<devyn> it's very CGI scripty
<devyn> even if you do MVC with PHP you can't get away from that inherently, of course, because that's just how PHP works
<devyn> but
<devyn> if you do MVC with PHP
<devyn> the dev style is MVC-like
<devyn> *not* this shit
<devyn> where the whole thing basically is script upon script upon script to output an HTML document
<glowcoil> devyn: yeah wp is shite
<glowcoil> devyn: sounds awful, why do you work with it every day :p
<devyn> because it pays rather well
<devyn> and demand is high
<devyn> lol
<purr> lol
<glowcoil> haha ok

<ELLIOTTCABLE> hi, all
<ELLIOTTCABLE> glowcoil, devyn: I won't be doing any sort of English-parsing. My rules are simple: I've got a script to build a comprehensive database of *categories* which disambiguation pages are kept in,
glowcoil has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ELLIOTTCABLE> so I can unequivocally say “This resolves to a disambiguation page, and is thus useless.”
<ELLIOTTCABLE> then, I'm going to do the only thing you can sanely do in that situation: take the first wikilink on the page, and *temporary* redirect to that.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> it won't cache those results, either. So, meaningless (disambiguation-at-the-time-of-sharing-with-the-Internet) links won't have any permanent meaning.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> later on, I *might* create a really simple intermediary-page for the first visitor to choose which wikilink (out of, say, ten) is the most relevant one.

<bluebie> lol what
<purr> lol
<bluebie> #elliottcable
<bluebie> the temple of ego :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE> bluebie: hi!
<ELLIOTTCABLE> lol what what?
<ELLIOTTCABLE> so, yeah
<bluebie> are you an open source project now?
<bluebie> shouldn't you have two hashes? :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE> NFC is really cool. NFC and wireless charging are the only things I miss, honestly.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Android really was the crock of shit I'd expected. Now my hopes rest on Windows phone, which is really ironic and strange.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> but, yeah:
<ELLIOTTCABLE> NFC-enabled Yubikey is basically The Best Thing.
<bluebie> haha
<bluebie> windows phone
<bluebie> I know many people with windows phones
<ELLIOTTCABLE> it can *securely* generate OATH tokens.
<bluebie> I don't know any people who want to use windows phone
<bluebie> except ELLIOTTCABLE aparently
<ELLIOTTCABLE> so, anything that uses 2FA can be secured by something-you-have that *doesn't run random Angry Birds apps capable of stealing your secret key*
<bluebie> you should email microsoft and say "hey look I'm a developer" and they'll probably rock up to your house with some booze and a bag of windows phones
<ELLIOTTCABLE> LOL
<ELLIOTTCABLE> that's … actually … not a bad plan …
<ELLIOTTCABLE> hrm
<bluebie> it's what they seem to do at all the local universities
<ELLIOTTCABLE> so, wait, did you not know #ELLIOTTCABLE was a thing?
<bluebie> yubi does nfc keys?!?!!
<ELLIOTTCABLE> I swear you've been in here
<bluebie> that's damned awesome
<ELLIOTTCABLE> yes, Yubi are NFC-enabled
<ELLIOTTCABLE> yes.
<bluebie> maybe, i'm forgetful
<ELLIOTTCABLE> they also run JavaCard apps.
<bluebie> but I thought it was #paws
<ELLIOTTCABLE> it's a spastically insane pain in the ass to set them up and install them, right now,
<bluebie> but that redirects here somehow
<ELLIOTTCABLE> but it's really cool.
<bluebie> I have some of the regular usb yubikeys
<bluebie> they're not terribly useful I find
<bluebie> they're effectively useless for crypto.. only good for authenticating to other trusted remote parties.. but then, I dislike "the cloud" so I don't really use any of those.. at least not any that support yubikeys
<bluebie> plus try using a yubikey on an ipad
<bluebie> not a good time
<bluebie> it works
<bluebie> sort of
<bluebie> meanwhile on iOS https://www.frenchgirlsapp.com/ french girls is fun
<ELLIOTTCABLE> yeah, problem with Yubikey, the reason I'm not using it right now, is compatibility.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> With Authy, despite the inherent insecurity of the system being on a smartphone, at least it's *always available*, whether I'm trying to log in on my phone or on a friend's computer.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> with NFC, and a Yubikey, that was a non-issue: could use NFC on the go, and plug it into any ol' USB port.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> (the NFC-enabled Yubikey can be changed into a mode that generates OATH keys, instead of Yubikey's credentials thingamajig)
<bluebie> I get so confused on my ipad now
<bluebie> I'm constantly hunting for a back button
<bluebie> nothing makes sense anymore
<ELLIOTTCABLE> right
<ELLIOTTCABLE> took me a while to re-adjust
<ELLIOTTCABLE> I was typing like a retard for a solid week after switching back
<bluebie> I use both nexus 5 and ipad mini..
<ELLIOTTCABLE> yeah
<ELLIOTTCABLE> got that
<bluebie> yeah
<bluebie> it's rough
<bluebie> what the hell is going on in the ipad app store
<bluebie> you tap an app
<bluebie> and it opens up a little model thing in the middle
<bluebie> but there's nothing, anywhere, to get back from that, except the home button
<bluebie> I spent like 15 seconds scanning that screen trying to unlock the puzzle before I just tried tapping stuff to see if anything worked
<bluebie> (which of course it did)
<bluebie> iOS never used to have situations where essential functions required knowing weird gestures :/
<bluebie> being in facebook, tapping a link, having chrome open up, and then being able to tap back and be back in facebook, is perhaps the best thing ever on a phone
<bluebie> I think my brain had been gruberwashed in to thinking the back button was a bad idea
<bluebie> but it just works so well almost all of the time

<ELLIOTTCABLE> well, holy shit.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> I literally do not know what to do with this.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> bluebie: yeah, iOS 7 is, just,
<ELLIOTTCABLE> derp. in a lot of ways.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> haven't got 7.1 yet, I hear it's better in some cases
<ELLIOTTCABLE> -^ that shit. ಠ_ಠ
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Oh. Cool.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> “In the latest version of iOS 7, it is giving users the option to turn on button shapes around clickable areas in applications, says Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac. The new software is still in beta, and only developers have access to it.”
<ELLIOTTCABLE> well, that's excellent news.

<ELLIOTTCABLE> glowcoil: what?
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Tinder prioritizes iOS users.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> I got, like, three likes, *ever.*
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Switch to Android, switch back …
<ELLIOTTCABLE> wipe my phone today.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Going back through, setting each one of my apps up,
<ELLIOTTCABLE> swipe four girls. Get four “they liked you too”s.
<devyn> what really?
<ELLIOTTCABLE> four in a row.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> but far less shocked now, than when I typed it. I was just being dumb.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> *Obviously*, the app is going to try hard to show you profiles that are likely to be matches; pairings of which one-half has already said yes have a hugely higher chance of being successful.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Thus, if it has any people who've already swiped you, it's going to prioritize getting *those* in front of your face in the short time you're looking at the app.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> The longer you're away, the higher the backlog, and thus the more already-swiped-yes pairings it's gotta shove into a nominally-shorter “app open” span.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Makes sense to ramp up the ratio of randoms to already-swiped'ers if you haven't opened it in a while.
