<jfhbrook>
fwiw I don't think writing a blog post about how crappy your job is, is even bad, much less bad enough to warrant, say, putting them on a do-not-hire list
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
jfhbrook: Yeah, I definitely agree with that.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
I'd say it reflects … not-well on her character, but also like, super-mildly.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
It'd be like trying to higher an 18 year old, and when googling them, coming across them complaining about their life on Tumblr.
<jfhbrook>
I'm not even sure it reflects negatively on one's character
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
After like, a year, it really shouldn't (will, but shouldn't) affect her hireability. I'm pretty sure she learned a lesson from the results. /=
<jfhbrook>
yeah I dunno
<jfhbrook>
I don't want to like get into it, surprisingly
<jfhbrook>
sometimes I can't stop myself from saying something though
<jfhbrook>
it's probably one of my biggest failings
<purr>
<alexgordon> is that when the asians arrive?
* alexgordon
reads scrollback
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: funny, my position is the opposite. basic income is economically illterate, but the state definitely should be building basic housing for people, otherwise the lower classes are essentially locked out of cities -- where the wealth is
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
economically illiterate how?
<alexgordon>
two ways: 1) it's ridiculously expensive, and 2) it causes inflation
<alexgordon>
say you gave everybody in america $1k a month ... that's 3.8 billion dollars a year
<alexgordon>
erm, *trillion
<alexgordon>
seems to be more than US federal tax reciepts
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
Do you have any idea of what the GPD of the U.S. is? :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
just because *the government* cannot afford it, doesn't mean *the country* cannot afford it.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
(20% of the entire world, iirc.)
<alexgordon>
GDP is much more than the amount of money the government has to spend though
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
more than the whole EU combined.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
yes, of course.
<alexgordon>
so where does the money come from?
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
It's a given that basic income includes a tax hike.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
We're not gonna magically produce $1,000/year per person From Nowhere.
<alexgordon>
well for one if you're doing basic income it would make sense to get rid of sales tax, since the two are opposites
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
(nominally, *on non-essentials.)
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
I'd have to find the source, but there's a Srs Bsns Study that basically shows you can achieve an increased standard of living *across the board* (yes, that sounds like magic) with a 45% flat-tax and wealth redistribution
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
(not that I advocate that, I think that's absolutely ridiculous)
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
(just saying, macroeconomics are Fucking Unintuitive)
<alexgordon>
wealth redistribution of what sort?
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
as in, basic income
<alexgordon>
and this flat tax is an income tax?
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
I think the explanation proffered for the effect was basically that increased governmental efficiency due to having to Do Less meant that there was exponentially less waste in the system as a whole, meaning that everybody benefited more than they lost.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
yep
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
now BACK TO STUDYING
<alexgordon>
can't decide if libertarian or not
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
lmao
<alexgordon>
less government... 45% tax rate... less government... 45%...
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
if so, then you've nailed my opinion-set. ;)
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: in the UK the top rate of tax used to be 90% (decades ago) then thatcher reduced it to 70% (?) it is 45% now
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
again: not suggesting the U.S. experiment with that. Way too fucking high, for the majority.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
yeah, my federal tax bracket in the U.S. is 39.6%
<alexgordon>
*not sure if a lot or not*
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
alexgordon: wat. yes, 40% is a lot. didn't you just say the highest over there was 45%?
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
lol accidentally typed this while meaning to speak in here
<purr>
lolllll
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
but it accurately represents my feelings:
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: yes but it's highly nonlinear. 40% is basically middle class. obviously it's marginal though
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
highly nonlinear, wat
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: 40% rate kicks in at £31k
<alexgordon>
45% rate kicks in at £150k
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
woah.
<pikajude>
i'm playing huniepop
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: it's all dem pensioners :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
15% jumps to 25% at £26k, to 28% at £63k, to 33% at £131k, to 35% at £286k
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: the government has convinced people that a pension is a welfare payment you get from the government. Don't need to save, the government will take care of everything!
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
but yes, 85% of the population is paying less than 28%.
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
amazing that 40% is like, a normal amount, over there.
<alexgordon>
people get paid less
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
You've gotta be well on your way to being a millionaire to lose that much of your money to the government, over here o_o
<alexgordon>
a lot of people don't even make £31k, and those that do are too happy to care
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
I mean, in what industries?
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
UGH BACK TO HOMEWORK
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
U R V. DISTRACTING
* ELLIOTTCABLE
runs off and cries
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: also the first £10k is tax free, so that helps a lot
<alexgordon>
ELLIOTTCABLE: yeah go study :P
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
wait, so 40% of 31k when you make 41k?
<ELLIOTTCABLE>
or 40% of 21k when you make 31k
<alexgordon>
the first 10k is tax free, the next 21k is taxed at 20%, the rest is at 40%
