<lukego> I'd like to order the parts to assemble a Glasgow. Is there an idiot-proof way to order the bits (from Europe)? I've never ordered a BoM before and when I tried uploading the CSV to Mouser the result wasn't sane e.g. no FPGA because it didn't have a manufacturer part number listed
<lukego> the bits and some suitable PCBs that is...
<tnt> No
<tnt> (there is no idiot-proof way)
<tnt> You'll need to manually verify the bom and check for part alternative that may be out of stock or discontinued (especially for thingslike ceramic caps). And then mouser just doesn't _have_ all the parts so you need multiple vendors.
<lukego> ok, thanks for the reality check
<lukego> How about a foolproof way to order the PCB? I've never ordered a PCB before but from browsing sites like JLCPCB it seems like there are myriad options to choose from and I wouldn't like to goof something important
<tnt> you've never ordered pcb and you're planning on assembling a glasgow yourself ? Not exactly a beginner level board.
<nmz787> does glasgow need reflow soldering? or are all the parts able to be done by hand? (I consider stuff like QFP hand solderable)
<daveshah> It needs reflow as it uses a BGA iCE40
<nmz787> ah
<nmz787> I've never got that far into home soldering
<bsmt> you really don't want to hand solder it anyways, even without the BGA. i did the passives on the back side by hand, because i only had one type of solder paste. would not recommend.
<FFY00> lukego, there are no european stores which sell the fpga
<FFY00> you will have to go with digikey
<MadHacker> Mouser have it.
<MadHacker> RS sadly only have a different package. :(
<tnt> Mouser has it if you want 260 of them ...
<tnt> Digikey is the only source for single qty.
<FFY00> MadHacker, yes, I meant low quantity retail
<samlittlewood_> lukego: here is my exported bom from mouser order - all except ice40, which i got from digikey: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7lxf80n95l3v8cy/Project_Apr08_0603PM.xls?dl=0
<samlittlewood_> caveats: u8 and u36 labels should be swapped - and j5 is half width - for some reason (low stock?) i used 2 side by side.
<samlittlewood_> from a brief scan, one 1 part is out of stock atm - 18pF ceramic, there will be many suitable replacements
<samlittlewood_> i used aisler for pcbs - not a very good experience. They fab, test ans ship number of boards you ask for - test failures are stickered. I only got 1 good board out of 3.
<samlittlewood_> as above, you will need to reflow. I stick with the same paste and rely on surface tension for the bottom of the board. I didn’t use paste for the bga - just a light smear of flux.
<samlittlewood_> (actually, it _should_ have been a light smear, but was somewhat thicker, and so I spent some time with ipa and compressed air cleaning crap from under the part.)
