<Noxz>
for watches, for anything beyond large scale prototyping
<Noxz>
we learned to file squares out of round stock in our lathes today
<Noxz>
overshot dimensions quite a few times
<Noxz>
meh
<qu1j0t3>
Noxz: have to say i agree
<Noxz>
like, what is the use of it? I didnt really read the article, but the idea that you can learn about watchmaking from plastics is ridiculous
<Noxz>
I thought about learnign on the side before.. but enough professional watchmakers said: go to school... and holy shit yes school I think is really necessary
<Noxz>
every day, 8hrs or this stuff, not jsut some hobby on the side
<sync>
there is nothing special in watches tho
<Noxz>
special?
<Noxz>
there is know-how of what broke and what to adjust, etc
<Noxz>
and you wont get that know-how without experience
<Noxz>
a program gives that to you.. 2 hrs after work wont
<Noxz>
not in any amount of time, that is
<sync>
it's just mechanics
<Noxz>
also, guidance is nice.. like you can read a book and try stuff out..
<Noxz>
but not everyone working with watches is a mechanical engineer
<Noxz>
there are some obvious things, yes
<Noxz>
but there are some t hings that simply require practice
<Noxz>
like filing something flat
<Noxz>
it's not really difficult to do, but one slip and you gotta start over
<Noxz>
something so mundane but it can set you back a bit
<pie__>
Noxz, i see
<pie__>
i didnt really think much about it other then "hm, well thats a thing i guess"
<Noxz>
I will be modeling a certain tourbillon inthe next two weeks for a presentation on the inventor
<pie__>
<Noxz> also, guidance is nice.. like you can read a book and try stuff out..
<pie__>

* pie__
flails helplessly
<Noxz>
but having an instructor helps
<sync>
why would I file something flat, I have machines for that
<Noxz>
like, nothing can beat an instructor with decades of experience
<Noxz>
hah.. yeah, the watch on my writst (an ETA 7750 based movement) was made by robits, but the finishing was done by hand
<pie__>
Noxz, sync, afaiu hand crafting with the proper techniques can still beat a lot of machine stuff?
<sync>
but yes, I had to do that as well during my apprenticeship
<pie__>
unless you go very expensive i guess?
<Noxz>
some things need hand crafted, but yeah, that's sorta the idea
<sync>
they don't really have to be handcrafted
<Noxz>
it's the romantic idea that someone handmade it
<Noxz>
no, and nobody needs a wristwatch anymore
<sync>
it's just the watch circlejerk
<Noxz>
which is the crowd I will be serving
<Noxz>
anywho, new video on some AR stuff I am into, so time to watch that, then make dinner
<sync>
it's just stupid at this time to spend any money on a timepiece that is as inaccurate as a mechanical watch is
<Noxz>
it's a luxary item, not a time keeping scientific device
<sync>
thus stupid
<Noxz>
quartz won a long time ago
<sync>
but eh, I have repaired watches before, it's like any other small mechanical system
<Noxz>
there's several degrees of "repair" ;)
<Noxz>
and also the idea that companies want you to get through [x] per day
<sync>
well, I made gears, replaced jewels and made replacement dials
<Noxz>
you have cycloidal cutters? I was researching them a lil through the weekend
<Noxz>
not that we dont not have them at school.. but I was looking for specific features
<sync>
no, I have not made face gears in that way

essentially what I am trying to convey is, that the certification program I am in is 2 years long.. so reading one book from george daniels and practicing in your spare time likely wont get you the experience you would actually need to make a profit in the field
<Noxz>
anywho, time to feed frogs, the dog, and myself!
<pie__>
preferably not eating the frogs and the god after you feed them
<pie__>
dog
<pie__>
Noxz, ^
<Noxz>
gotta fatten them up, first!
<jesseg>
maybe the dog eats the frogs
<jesseg>
Noxz, hey you still buzzing around there?
<pie__>
now he ribbits
<pie__>
or barks
<pie__>
or both
<pie__>
not sure
<jesseg>
sync, I've thought about building a quartz controlled self adjusting pendulum for cuckoo clocks. It'd have an accelerometer or gyro sensor and a tiny motor and it'd slowly inch its way up or down till the swinging speed was perfect
