Hey all...any reason why `ipfs dht findpeer <cid>` will result into a Error: routing: not found even when the <cid> used was retrieved via `ipfs dht findprovs`?

findpeer finds a peer, findprovs finds a piece of data

Can anyone recommend any online spaces where IPFS developers hang out and talk about non-technical stuff? I like the technology behind IPFS but I'm having a hard time getting to know the social/political community behind it. ❤

christianbundy: you mean like this channel? :D
<christianbundy[m>
I don't know, are there lots of non-technical discussions here? I've only been lurking for a few days but it feels like more like a tech support channel.

I understand that it's unconventional, but to me the entire point of P2P is that it's social and political. Tech for the sake of tech isn't very interesting IMO.

if you want more technical discussions, look at #ipfs-dev:matrix.org
<swedneck1>
also i'm not sure what you mean by "tech for the sake of tech"?

I am now interested in knowing how to have a node state the blocks it does not want. I quickly looked at the command cli documentation for `ipfs dht` here https://docs-beta.ipfs.io/reference/cli/#ipfs-dht but did not see any command that looks like it is doing that
<dadepo[m]>
> PFS nodes use the DHT to advertise which blocks they have, which blocks they want, and which blocks they don't want.
<dadepo[m]>
Any ideas?
<christianbundy[m>
Swedneck: I'm looking for exact opposite of that. In the SSB and Dat ecosystems there are plenty of places to talk with other P2P developers and get to know each other personally, but within IPFS I've only been able to find technical spaces. It's cool that there are places to troubleshoot technical problems, but I'm looking for spaces where people are less focused on tech and more focused on people.

Using a DHT to tell people about data you don't want would be extremely inefficient and unnecessary. It is unlikely that anyone is going to send you data unless you explicitly ask for it (and if they did, then advertising not to in the DHT wouldn't really help).
<aschmahmann[m]>
What are you trying to do that makes that functionality seem interesting to you? Perhaps there's an alternative.

I'm not looking for a Matrix chat room, I'm looking for a social network on top of IPFS that's used by people who work on IPFS.
<christianbundy[m>
On networks like Scuttlebutt you can chat with a core developer about tech specs, but you can also see that they're posting recipes and photos with their kids and quarantine frustrations and political ideas and book reviews and all kinds of stuff.
<swedneck1>
remember that ipfs is still in early development and more comparable to http than scuttlebutt, i think
ChrisLane has joined #ipfs
<swedneck1>
scuttlebutt is basically made for social networks, so it's not surprising that they have a social network built on it
<christianbundy[m>
Yeah, I think IPFS is a few months younger than SSB, and SSB is definitely built with social applications in mind. Good to know that only the technical spaces exist right now, I'll probably check back in a few months to see if there are any social spaces. Thanks for the info!
<swedneck1>
not really sure what would be the point of social stuff on ipfs tbh. there's already scuttlebutt, activitypub, and matrix for that
<swedneck1>
however using ipfs for media makes sense

<RubenKelevra[m]>
<christianbundy[m "Yeah, I think IPFS is a few mont"> I think IPFS has just different goals, IPFS is made for the structure below applications like social plattforms. Like http is a structure made to be below websites.
<RubenKelevra[m]>
christianbundy: if you're looking for applications of IPFS, take a look at awesome.ipfs.io
<christianbundy[m>
RubenKelevra: Right, same with Scuttlebutt. The most popular applications are our social applications, but there's Git and chess and secret sharing and journals and chats and all sorts of other stuff that you'd find on IPFS.
<christianbundy[m>
I'm not looking for apps, I'm trying to get to know the humans working on IPFS, especially in a non-technical context.
<christianbundy[m>
It's totally fine if that kind of space doesn't exist in the IPFS ecosystem. No trouble at all.
<RubenKelevra[m]>
christianbundy: I think there's just not yet an application which is famously used by the developers which builds on IPFS, because the development is too early - I guess.
<RubenKelevra[m]>
@everyone else: correct me if I'm wrong :)
<RubenKelevra[m]>
christianbundy: but I'm wrote a while ago with the developer of Moin (android application) and asked if he see the potential to extend it from a simple chat application it is today, to some kind of microblogging service :)
<christianbundy[m>
Totally. My priorities don't have to be anyone else's priorities. I'll check back in a few months to see if there are any social spaces to hang out in.
<christianbundy[m>
Is Moin the "money evolved" crypto-wallet thing?
<RubenKelevra[m]>
<swedneck1 "you're showing up as being on th"> So he's on matrix, bridged to IRC with his bridge and than bridged back to matrix.org via the matrix.org Bridge :)
