aschmahmann: Thanks for the clarification. Thinking about it, I am accessing the files as `/ipns/12D3MyKey.../distfiles/b3/go-ipfs_v0.7.0_linux-amd64.tar.gz` and the like.
<JCaesar>
But in that case, is just publishing the root really enough? Some peer A may access `/ipns/12D3…/distfiles/6d/go-ipfs_v0.4.22_linux-amd64.tar.gz`, then it has `.../distfiles` and get that from my node. Now another peer might try to access some other file/folder in distfiles, gets `distfiles` from A, and then has no idea where to get the file it wants from?

to give a summary, the best situation I see is analogous to the way 'websites' are already generally framed today - one in which those who put indexes / catalogues together become the de-facto authority on whether these indexes are to be trusted
<dynodeio[m]>
consider how some torrent trackers have better reputation than others, because it is a strict rule to not include any malware in what is uploaded
<dynodeio[m]>
or audio / video encoding quality is also enforced

dynodeio[m]: please, go ahead
<dynodeio[m]>
great
<dynodeio[m]>
well, step 1 is to abandon the WWW in its entirety
<dynodeio[m]>
every framework and every application that was built for an ecosystem that is suffocating us
<dynodeio[m]>
(in this stage this is merely an issue of mindset, as well as not contributing to the further growth of web services and technologies, unless you depend on that for employment or whatever)
<dynodeio[m]>
step 2 is to construct alternate information management systems with setups like the above in mind (I realise this is far easier said that done)

<dynodeio[m]>
I elaborated on one such concept in a chart I put together, which essentially ensures identity through IPFS peer IDs and public key signatures, as opposed to e.g. the DNS registrations and SSL certs of the WWW
<dynodeio[m]>
once that behemoth is over, the 3rd step is in annihilating the WWW to accelerate the adoption of distributed [UIDX / federated] technologies
<dynodeio[m]>
there is ample precedent on how to successfully go about this
<dynodeio[m]>
I gave hints to some in this essay that I hope I don't get banned for linking

Is there a way to hard limit the amount connections ipfs opens? My crappy little server can't handle 1500 connections, which is way above the highWaterMark if 200 I've set
