<aschmahmann> i.e. when the daemon is already running running `ipfs <command>` triggers an HTTP API call to the already running daemon. For some commands you can run `ipfs <command>` and if the daemon isn't running then it'll just run it's own node and execute the commands directly (e.g. `ipfs id`).

<ZerXes> the HTTP-gateway?
<swedneck> yes
<swedneck> sometimes it takes like 10 minutes before it shows my data
<swedneck> other times it's instant
<jessicara> yeah sometimes takes that long here too

<ZerXes> swedneck: just out of curiosity, how does it rank for you? https://ipfs.github.io/public-gateway-checker/
<ZerXes> for me its the fastest gateway avalible, but thats no suprise as I am on the same network
<jessicara> 9th here, iofs.io first apparently
<jessicara> ipfs*
<ZerXes> yeah is probably only ranked high when you are in Sweden
<swedneck> ipfs.best-practice.se is quite a ways down on the list
<ZerXes> oh
<swedneck> 5.86s
<ZerXes> wow thats slow
<ZerXes> strange
<swedneck> dweb.link is at the top
<swedneck> 0.15s
<ZerXes> hah, dweb.link 12th for me
<jessicara> 3rd for me with 0.09s apparently

<swedneck> then i would point you to textile and orbitdb, they are projects building on IPFS that would make such a thing much easier
<swedneck> i don't know of any projects that actually do somehing like what yo say, however

<codebam> why is my domain not resolving with dnslink? seanbehan.dev I have a record in google domains here
<swedneck> it's malformed
<swedneck> the correct format is `dnslink=/ipfs/whatever`
<codebam> malformed? what did I mess up?
<codebam> ohh okay thank you
<swedneck> you have just written `/ipfs/whatever`
<swedneck> 👍️
<codebam> fixed now thanks! I'll test it out in a couple mins
<swedneck> also i'd point the www to the base domain

<swedneck> and lastly you might want to use an ipns address so you can update it without having to change the dns
<codebam> if I set up IPNS on my server should I set the record to the IPNS record of my server or what's best practices for using dnslink?
<swedneck> i'd generate an IPNS address for this specific site, and use that
<swedneck> `ipfs key gen`
<codebam> that server needs to stay up for it to resolve right?
<swedneck> you could publish it from any node with the private key for the address
<swedneck> but in practice you
<swedneck> * but in practice you'd want the server to stay online
royal_screwup21 has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<codebam> okay
<codebam> why did you give me key gen?
ygrek has joined #ipfs
<swedneck> that's the command you'd use to generate a new IPNS address
<swedneck> key and address are two sides of the same coin, the address is just the hash/cid/something of the public key

<codebam> oh okay. I just used ipfs name publish $hash
<codebam> would anyone be able to tell me what I'm doing wrong here in my deployment script http://ix.io/2Gpq
<swedneck> that uses the address of your node
<swedneck> which isn't ideal
<codebam> wait so I shouldn't set the dnslink to the ipns of my node?
<codebam> I don't understand why that isn't ideal
<swedneck> as i said, it's better to make an address specifically for the site
<codebam> okay so once I run `key gen seanbehan.dev`
<swedneck> that way you have the flexibility to simply copy the key to another node if you wish
<codebam> then how do I set that to the right ipfs hash?
<codebam> oh I see never mind
<swedneck> `ipfs name publish --key=seanbehan.dev <cid>`
