pestdoktor: In the IPFS_PATH location there is a file called `api` that contains a multiaddr for the api. That file is created and destroyed by the daemon when it is running and when it stops, although you can manually set it too (e.g. for having your IPFS client target a remote daemon).

Passing the `--api` option is just another way to say where the daemon you want to talk to is running, but it's less convenient then just having things work when you set the correct IPFS_PATH locally.
