I have a suggestion, to add the Fossil structural artifact format as one of the formats of Multicodec. Fossil artifacts are referred by the SHA-1 hash or SHA3-256 hash, and the multicodec list already has those hashes, but then it can also help to specify that it is being linked to a Fossil manifest. It already supports Git, but some people including myself prefer Fossil instead of Git.

I used multihash numbers in a C program which computes hashing; it uses the multihash numbers to specify which hashing algorithm to use, although the CID numbers aren't used. They are macros, such as FOSIMP_SHA1 is defined as 0x11 and you can pass it to the fosimp_hash or fosimp_hash_stream or fosimp_set_hash function to specify that you want SHA-1 hashing.

fiveseven: no problem. I'm not sure I understand your statement though, what user would want the alert and what would the alert be? If nobody is hosting the content then nobody is hosting it 🤷♀️, hosting content costs resources (storage, bandwidth, etc.).

Perhaps there is a reason to try and have nodes that cache lots of content (e.g gateways) be searchable in a more efficient way. This might just lead to abuse of public gateways though, so really people who want to make content available should try and make it available.

fiveseven: depending on precisely what information you're looking for it may not be possible to know why `ipfs get` isn't finding data without running additional commands. For example, running IPFS offline is a totally legitimate use case, so if you look for data and it's not on your offline network is the issue that your network is down or that the data isn't anywhere or that the data isn't in your offline network?

Perhaps go-ipfs could report at the end of some timeout/process what we've "tried" so far to help with diagnosis on failed gets, but describing what's been tried could be pretty tricky as well.

fiveseven: Having some download progress like `ipfs pin add --progress` gives seems like it could be useful. I'm not sure about how much users should be exposed (outside of debugging) to internal search mechanics in terms of finding even the first byte of the content though.
