hm.. i checked the HDMI cable, it's 10.2 Gbps, supports 4K @ 24Hz
<ngc0202>
Could that be why?
<TheTrash>
Eh 4K on a Pi2 is a bit of a stretch, I mean, _technically_ it might be able to do more than 1080p, but at like 15fps in the UI alone.
<TheTrash>
The hardware video decoding definitely doesn't do more than 1080p60
<TheTrash>
So even if you got it to run at all at more than 1080p, it wouldn't be very useful, at least not for video.
<TheTrash>
The HDMI port is also 1.3, which can do max 2560x1440
<TheTrash>
I find it a bit odd that selecting more than 1080p isn't possible at all, maybe someone capped it, but if someone did cap it, it's probably because it didn't really work in any useful way :P

<ngc0202>
hm that is a shame
<ngc0202>
1440p would be at least an acceptable compromise
<ngc0202>
or would the pi have difficulty with that as well?
<TheTrash>
There's no hardware decoding beyond 1080p and the CPU is a bit of a dud, a Pi3 _in theory_ might stand a chance, but a Pi2, I don't think so.
<ngc0202>
oh I actually have a 3B
<ngc0202>
not sure why I thought it was a 2
<ngc0202>
does what you said about hardware decoding apply there?
<ngc0202>
seems surprising the GPU can't do more than 1080p
<TheTrash>
It is a bit surprising, but it's what they went for, even on the Pi3
<TheTrash>
Pi3 has virtually the same GPU, it does run a bit faster but it doesn't do any hardware decoding beyond 1080p h264 either, so the same limits apply.
<TheTrash>
Pi3 can somewhat decode h265 in 1080p, but it's all a bit iffy.
<ngc0202>
geez ok. that's a shame. well thanks for the info
