Milhouse: I think I've debugged the problem.
<trn>
Milhouse: It's a combination of the ext4 inode cache not being reclaimed and buffer fragmentation as a result.
<trn>
Milhouse: Buy dropping all caches and

Milhouse: aggressively compacting memory, most but not the last recently allocated buffer cache objects are reused. This reduces the kernel memory leak to ~3MB per day under heavy IO.
<trn>
Systems not using ext4 drives would only leak a few K a day or at worst 100k I calculate based on SD I/On- so would run for a year or so before locking up. I will move to your 5.0x based builds as a workaround but I think
<trn>
an 9.0.2 might be in order that updates to 4.19.32 which should avoid the problem

future releases will include a more recent kernel, not yet decided if it will continue to be 4.19.y or a switch to a 5.x kernel

Good morning. In the meantime, I can manually adjust the VM and drop caches and compact, so if I only leak 3MB a day under full load thats a reboot about every 5 or 6 months.
<trn>
I only noticed the issue trying to move 8TB around.
<trn>
I wish we had slabtop and vmstat and the other procps tools available in LibreELEC.
<oblikoamorale>
8TB with 12MBps... ouch
<trn>
oblikoamorale: It's not a big deal because I was just going to let it run for the week.
<trn>
It's only about ~6TB but moving it onto a nee 8TB RAID1.
<trn>
*new
<trn>
You can get ~21Mbps over the USB on the same board, but unfortunately all my USB's are full with disks and I don't have a hub handy.
<trn>
err, MBps not Mbps
<oblikoamorale>
your rpi will eventually melt down or something ;)
<trn>
It's the original Rpi3 which runs quite hot, it needs hestsinks to not throttle
<trn>
the B+ should copy over the network at the speed of the disk, so about half the time, because it has gigabit networking rather than 100Mb.
<trn>
But I figured, if I ordered the new ones, the copy will be done by the time they get here anyway.
<trn>
I started it sometime on Friday, it's about 4TB done so far.
<oblikoamorale>
iirc B+ gigabit network is limited by a bus it is connected to, so it's only ~3x perfomance gain over previous models

<trn>
Correct, but if you can do ~20MB disk to disk on the same Pi, it would do at least 20MB over the network vs ~12.
<trn>
The Pi bus is max 480Mbps so 60M/s, so the best case is ~30MB for transfers, and I usually see about ~22-ish.
<trn>
Disks and network on the same bus is sort of terrible, but I guess that is part of why it is so cheap.
