<Valduare> rockship and infotmic and allwinner
<naobsd> different company makes different chips...
<Valduare> im still trying to wrap my head around these devices lol
<Valduare> not use to not having easy access to bootup sequences to see whats going on etc.

<naobsd> any rockchip guy here?
<amstan> naobsd: mmind is partially rockchip
<naobsd> ah, well, rock-chips.com guy...
<amstan> they don't really go on irc
<amstan> i told them about it though
<naobsd> I want to ask is there any plan to upstream u-boot?
<amstan> i don't think they use u-boot
<naobsd> btw there was a guy on here in last month
<naobsd> they use u-boot for RK3288 Android
<naobsd> =they are using
<amstan> must not the be the usual crowd i work with
<amstan> rk3288 android uses 3.10
<naobsd> everything is different to Chrome OS world
<naobsd> btw, can we(non-developer) use Chrome/Chromium OS on RK3288?
<amstan> yeah, you can get chromium os working pretty straight forward
<naobsd> all necessary parts are open?
<amstan> the only thing that's not open is mali
<naobsd> ah
<amstan> but i'm sure you can grab the binaries and use them with whatever you want
<amstan> also... if you have an rk3288 board, just use any linux distro with an upstream kernel
<naobsd> there are mali/xorg modules in rkchrome, I want to try them...
<amstan> it should work equally well
<amstan> i think those modules are only for 3.10
<naobsd> now I'm talking about Chrome OS, not mainline Linux
<amstan> chromeos kernel is very close to mailine
<amstan> besides the few drivers we need for tpm and EC
<naobsd> I think we cannot grab mali binaries from Android because it's not compiled for X11
<amstan> yep, but mali binaries for chromeos should work
<naobsd> ^mali _userland_ binaries
<amstan> yep
<naobsd> so I asked all open? I only found in rkchome
<amstan> i'm not really sure how one could grab them
<naobsd> open=provided(not open source)
<amstan> i don't know enough about it yet
<naobsd> I'll try binary in rkchrome
<naobsd> with 3.10 android kernel at first
<amstan> that is unlikely to work
<naobsd> why?

<Tony_> if Chrome OS have enough Apps, I will try it on rk3188. :P
<Tony_> amstan, By the way, could rk3188 support Chrome OS ?
<naobsd> I guess you can try apps by chrome/chromium browser...
<amstan> yep
levd has joined #linux-rockchip
<amstan> or you could buy the chromebook we're building ;)
levd1 has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<naobsd> I have much interest about chromebook with Rockchip :)
<Tony_> I had tried them. I'm using them. but I don's think Chrome OS can replace Android OS or Windows OS so far.
<Tony_> in my opinion, there are just some simple Apps on Chrome OS so far.
<Tony_> *don't
<Tony_> :P
<Valduare> what is the allure of chromebooks?
<amstan> allure? that's a peculiar word
<Valduare> fix the spelling in your head :P its late here for me lol
levd1 has joined #linux-rockchip
levd has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<Tony_> Maybe "cloud", everything is in "cloud". hard drive -> Google drive etc.
<Tony_> That is one allure.
<Valduare> so more for people who consume internet and not for creators
<amstan> it's a facebook/reddit/youtube/netflix machine
<amstan> it's what 95% of people using computers need
<Valduare> aye
<Valduare> I have quite a few mk808 devices
<amstan> except this one is really stateless, you just open it and use it
<Valduare> and mk803iii
<amstan> no worrying about windows, about your files, about price
<amstan> windows viruses i mean
<Valduare> internet needs to get a bit faster in more areas of the country
<amstan> yeah, that's a given
<Valduare> I run my own mini cloud
<Valduare> few freenas boxes serving iscsi to esxi hosts
<Valduare> all my files from the macbook pro are synced to my cloud storage so I dont have to worry about the hard drive going on the macbook pro
<amstan> cloud is this hazy term that everyone uses
<amstan> but it's differet in every case
<amstan> for chromebooks you need the google apis mostly
<amstan> it's dependent on online services to make it useful
<Valduare> I self host my own calendar, contacts, email, tasks, storage - syncs with my notebook and iphone seamlessly.

<naobsd> amstan: which kernel config are you using for rk3288?
<naobsd> ^in chromeos-3.14
<amstan> naobsd: it's our own stuff, check the emerge files for how it's implemented
<amstan> not sure offhand what it uses
<naobsd> hm

<naobsd> amstan: ah, thanks, sorry...
<naobsd> probably I should read http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/build
<amstan> naobsd: if you really want to build you have to follow this: http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-guide
<amstan> it's a lot of work though
<amstan> it setups a chroot with the build enviroment first, then you can use that to compile all the packages
<amstan> including the kernel
<naobsd> thanks

<naobsd> rperier: can julien join here? I'm curious if he is doing something for mainline...
<rperier> He did a lot for "master" and for the base rules of the bsp meta layer. Frankly, these days he is not really active on "mainline"
<Linux_Bot> rperier: i am using mainline only. but at last, i am getting error initrd.img missing
<rperier> Linux_Bot: linux-rockchip-3.0.inc is only used by the old kernel
<rperier> not by linux-next
<naobsd> rperier: thanks. recently he updated radxa's wiki about mainline Linux kernel, so I guessed...
<rperier> however, he contributes to the mainline kernel sometimes
<rperier> (he is mostly active on the devicetree for rk3188 and rk3066)
<hipboi> rperier, i just send the email to the list about donation for rock pro
<hipboi> naobsd, i can ask if julien will join here
<rperier> hipboi: wow, thanks you Tom. Really appreciated, really :)
<hipboi> julien visited our office once
<rperier> oh really ? do you know Julien ? nice
<hipboi> rperier, it's our advertising ;)
<Linux_Bot> rperier : i think error is on rockchip-update-img.bbclass. mainline also using this
<naobsd> hipboi: no strong request. only if he can
<rperier> I only know Julien through internet (he is french like me so communication is easy)
<hipboi> julien's wife is Chinese, he has his holiday in China every year
<rperier> Linux_Bot: in fact, rockchip-update-img.bbclass is used when you add "rockchip-update-img" to IMAGE_FSTYPES in your machine configuration (it is located under conf/machine/include/rockchip.inc, something like that)
<rperier> so yes mainline uses it
<rperier> as a workaround, you can remove "rockchip-update-img" from IMAGE_FSTYPES. and call mkbootimg my hand to create your boot.img, just to be sure that you can boot your board with what you built. (it is a workaround since I should patch and fix this class to work properly with mainline)
<Linux_Bot> rperier: error is in this line -> mkbootimg --kernel ${KERNEL_IMG} --ramdisk ${INITRD_IMG} -o ${BOOT_IMG}, bcoz in mainline we are not generating initrd.img
<Linux_Bot> ok
<rperier> yes
<rperier> because we don't want to depend on a prioprietary bootloader for this
<rperier> the linux kernel can deal with initramfs itself , you can build an initramfs into the kernel image directly.
<naobsd> I think using mkbootimg is good...
<Linux_Bot> ok.. do you have initramfs for rk3066 ? or will this work (https://github.com/Galland/rk30_linux_initramfs.git) ?
<naobsd> we can pack/unpack kernel, initramfs, and dtb easily
<rperier> Linux_Bot: yocto is designed for that purpose... you can build your initramfs with yocto directly...
<rperier> see INITRAMFS_IMAGE variable in documentation
<naobsd> there is no "initramfs for rockchip", you can use any initramfs for arm
<rperier> it does not make sense to use a binary initramfs with yocto
hipboi has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<Linux_Bot> mainline supports -> nand on rockchip ?
<Linux_Bot> ok.. got it
<rperier> no, it is proprietary
<rperier> you can use almost all booting options with mainline (sdcard, usb, network...)
<rperier> but you cannot boot from NAND
Tony_ has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<rperier> also the NAND driver is buggy in linux 3.0... (I get random panic and freezes here)
<naobsd> just forgot about NAND, then all problem will be gone! ;)
<rperier> I agree
<Linux_Bot> ok.. can we at least use NAND for storage purpose?
<naobsd> Linux_Bot: bootloader can use NAND, but mainline kernel cannot
hipboi has joined #linux-rockchip
<gb_master> guys, the last time I tried to use the mainline kernel, it was not able to set the eth MAC address by taking it from the parameter file... do you know if this has been fixed or if there's a way to set it in the DTS?

naobsd has joined #linux-rockchip
<gb_master> so, in the kernel which module is used?

RayFlower_ has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
RayFlower_ has joined #linux-rockchip
<gb_master> mmm
<gb_master> does that code read the MAC address specified in the parameter file?
<mmind00_> gb_master: nope and never will
<gb_master> I was trying to understand why it never will
<mmind00_> because that parameter thingy is a rockchip-specific invention ... I think the generic way to do this is to have the bootloader replace the mac-adress property in the devicetree ... which of course doesn't work with the workaround of the devicetree appended to the kernel image
<gb_master> oh ok... so uboot would solve the issue?
<mmind00_> in theory ... it is supposed to solve it, but I don't think the old rk3188 uboot source do this
<gb_master> ok, so the alternative is to modify the dts file in order to hardcode the mac address, isn't it?
<mmind00_> yep
<gb_master> well, doable...
<gb_master> you know how to do that?
<gb_master> cool
<gb_master> thanks :)
