naobsd: in rk3288 parameters it is commented #KERNEL_IMG: 0x62008000, so can we set this and bypass u-boot? like RR ES which doesn't have u-boot initially
suby has joined #linux-rockchip
<naobsd>
ganbold__: parameter is parsed by bootloader. u-boot is one of bootloader for Rockchip
<naobsd>
ganbold__: you can use u-boot on RR ES. proprietary loader also parses parameter

hey guys!
<AstralixNB>
Does anyone know if there is a rock.dts for kernel 3.10 available?

<dsont>
AstralixNB, yo, I'm a noob, sorry
<dsont>
I'm trying to flash Fenix
<dsont>
RK3188
<AstralixNB>
Who is Fenix?
<dsont>
Fenix is a minipc
<dsont>
It's our buddies creation :)
<dsont>
It's pretty sweet
<dsont>
me and my buddy Jake are in Vietnam, trying to build a hardware startup for months
<AstralixNB>
Ok
<AstralixNB>
So, where is the problem with flashing?
<dsont>
and we passed through China, before Vietnam, and made friends with a Chinese guy
<dsont>
and he finished his project Fenix, and we just got the first one we are testing out :D
<dsont>
oh, I just don't know the procedure
<dsont>
which tools to use
<dsont>
wanna help out?
<dsont>
I have a .img file for lubuntu built for Fenix
<dsont>
I wanna back it all up, and flash that one
<AstralixNB>
Do you have some details of the board?
<AstralixNB>
Loader? Actual Image on it?
<dsont>
It's got android 4.4
<dsont>
I'm on ubuntu 14.10
<dsont>
its the image
<AstralixNB>
It is using RK Loader or uboot?
<dsont>
oooh.. I'm not sure
<dsont>
how would I find out?
<AstralixNB>
Ok, is the Android rooted?
<dsont>
Not sure
<dsont>
oh ok, so I should install a tool that checks
<AstralixNB>
??
<dsont>
=[
<AstralixNB>
No, I just ask some questions, so I could tell you how to backup your existing image
<dsont>
oh
<AstralixNB>
One easy way is, to boot Android and put in an empty SD card.
<dsont>
ok I'm figure out rooted or not
<AstralixNB>
Open adb shell and copy all raw partitions to the SD
<AstralixNB>
do you have adb set up?
<dsont>
it is not rooted
<AstralixNB>
do you have adb running?
<dsont>
ok. I found some instructions
<dsont>
I'll figure it out though, thanks for the help.
<dsont>
what's your email?

<AstralixNB>
Just ask, if you get stuck
<AstralixNB>
naobsd?
<FreezingCold>
AstralixNB: Is it possible to use uboot instead of RK Loader?
<AstralixNB>
on rk32889 sure
<AstralixNB>
on rk3188 naobsd sounds like he made great progress
<FreezingCold>
I'm using a RK3188T, one of those android sticks
<AstralixNB>
I myself just started to test this
<FreezingCold>
Ideally I'd like to run as stock as possible
<AstralixNB>
Then run Loader :)
<FreezingCold>
I'm not a fan of all these pre-built images with crap shoved in
<AstralixNB>
SCNR
<FreezingCold>
Isn't uboot a little more native to ARM?
<AstralixNB>
officially RK stopped uboot devel for RK3188 right in the middle and moved to RK3288. The only fully woking boot mechanism for RK31xx/RK30xx is Loader not uboot.
<AstralixNB>
Ah, and you might face the problem that uboot doesn't work with NAND
<FreezingCold>
I don't really get the whole Rockchip ecosystem to be honest
<FreezingCold>
it all feels very hacky :p
<AstralixNB>
So you could install uboot to an SD and boot something from SD, using the SD as a "eMMC" memory
<FreezingCold>
yeahhh
<FreezingCold>
I kinda wanted to use the internal flash
<AstralixNB>
Ah, no it is not that hack, it just not documented...
<AstralixNB>
The internal NAND can only be used by original rknand.ko drivers and corresponding Loader.
<FreezingCold>
Why?
<FreezingCold>
ideally I want to wipe out the entire flash and use the mainline Linux kernel with whatever distro I want
<AstralixNB>
Unfortunately all FTL mechanisms are patented
<FreezingCold>
really?
akaizen has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]

<AstralixNB>
(Flash translation Layer = the thing that does the wear-leveling and bad block handling on raw NAND memory)
<FreezingCold>
So I really can't use the NAND?
<AstralixNB>
You can, but you need to include the closed source NAND drivers that RK provides.
<AstralixNB>
Do you want to use Linux or Android with the stick?
<FreezingCold>
Definitely Linux.
<FreezingCold>
Can I throw that closed source NAND driver in with the mainline kernel
<FreezingCold>
?
field^Mop has joined #linux-rockchip
<AstralixNB>
Yes, sure
<AstralixNB>
Ah, mainline....
<AstralixNB>
I haven't used them in there... Probably yes, if you use the latest 3.10.x version of these drivers.
<FreezingCold>
Any decent blogs/tutorials for doing this?

<AstralixNB>
lol
<AstralixNB>
there is actually no interesting chipset on the marked that supports some USB3.0 and min. 2 SATA ports. At least no chipset, that a hobby programmer can afford.
<karlp>
if you have usb3, why do you still need sata?
<karlp>
I thought people only wanted sata because usb2 wasn't "fast enough" for them?
<AstralixNB>
Sorry, had to switch to a different account...
<AstralixNB>
I am interested in building my own storage appliance
<AstralixNB>
And internally I'd prefer SATA, but externally I like to see USB3
<AstralixNB>
There are chipsets available for this, but dev kit startes far over 1kUSD and sources require some nifty NDA
