<hmuller> I have stock u-boot (v2020.10) with minor configuration change reliably booting on the rockpro64
<hmuller> ^^^ Debian Bullseye (arm64)
<vagrantc> did the packaged version of u-boot in debian not work? if so, a bug report would be appreciated :)
<mps> vagrantc: do you have u-boot for gru-kevin maybe?
<vagrantc> no
<vagrantc> unless it's upstreamed by a different name?
<mps> ok, np. maybe I will find time to try to make it
<mps> there is arch/arm/dts/rk3399-gru-kevin.dts but not config and no kernel.its file
<mps> maybe configs/chromebook_bob_defconfig could work and use kernel.its from my current kernel builds
<wens> vagrantc: do you know if debian kernel packages build DTBs with overlay support?
<hmuller> vagrantc: last time I tried the sd card image, it came without bootloader
<hmuller> vagrantc: I'll look out the latest packaged version, the config comes in the package right?
<hmuller> s/out/at/
<alpernebbi> mps: I have this which can boot as RW_LEGACY: https://github.com/alpernebbi/u-boot/commits/rk3399-gru-kevin/wip
<alpernebbi> don't know if it works when packed as a chromeos kernel, I couldn't get it working the last time i tried
<mps> alpernebbi: it is not merged to u-boot master?
<alpernebbi> no, hanetzer was trying to boot it via SPI, but without success
<mps> I don't want to play with spi flashing
<mps> would like to make u-boot as kernel for boot partition
<alpernebbi> me too
<mps> alpernebbi: thanks for link and effort
<alpernebbi> I'm including some hacks that needs to be resolved for it to be upstreamable, then I'd guess SPI flash also has to be fixed somehow
<alpernebbi> np
<alpernebbi> (if you get it working I'd like to know)
<mps> my 'issue' now is that I use all my free time for next alpine linux stable release so don't have time for 'out of tree' tasks
<alpernebbi> that's fair, and I am sending things upstream where I can
<mps> look as good work, imo
<hmuller> alpernebbi: I'm booting rk3399 based rockpro64 from SPI without issue with stock u-boot configured to store environment in FAT (v2020.10)
<hmuller> if you dont change the environment storage location, it will not boot most of the time.
<hmuller> i would agree SPI flash has to be fixed
<alpernebbi> though there's not much I can do to fix SPI, as I don't have the necessary debugging hardware for gru-kevin
<alpernebbi> but I'm guessing it might be a configuration issue e.g. env storage as you said

<hmuller> alpernebbi: I got similar logs when I didn't use the correct DEV:PART when configuring environment storage in FAT
<hmuller> alpernebbi: I also got requests to reset board when setting SF_DEFAULT_BUS to 1, while leaving environment storage in SPI
<alpernebbi> thanks for the pointers
vicencb has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<hmuller> alpernebbi: no worries. just to be clear though, my working config booting from SPI does not modify SF_DEFAULT_BUS to 1

<vagrantc> wens: i don't think they're patched to support dtb overlays ... is it a feature that can be enabled from mainline without patches?
<vagrantc> hmuller: i've previously used https://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/arm64/20201028-02:17/netboot/SD-card-images/ on rockpro64
<vagrantc> well, when i added support for it i tested it anyways ... not sure if i have recently

<hmuller> vagrantc: last time I tested the sd-card-images on rockpro64, it installed with nobootloader
<hmuller> vagrantc: the bug report has been submitted
<vagrantc> hmuller: ah, that's an issue in flash-kernel
<vagrantc> hmuller: but it actually booted from the sd card, yes?
<hmuller> vagrantc: if you mean sd-card-images, no it would not boot from sd card.
<vagrantc> if you got as far as "nobootloader" then it booted from the sd-card-image

<vagrantc> are you using saveenv somehow?
<vagrantc> e.g. used saveenv on an older version of u-boot
<vagrantc> that will save the environment from an older version and possibly introduce bugs
<hmuller> vagrantc: according to irc log last I checked was on 23 OCT
<hmuller> vagrantc: I am using saveenv now, stored in FAT
<hmuller> but the previous test was a clean image

<hmuller> vagrantc: just finished install, same result as last time. this is what I get: https://pastebin.com/3X1U3D9K
<hmuller> note that SPI was zeroed, and fresh complete_image.img burned to sd card. installed to (micro) sd card
<hmuller> that was on the rockpro64, if it is working for you and not I then maybe there is some selection or other bias going on
<stikonas> just get UEFI (u-boot) installed onto SPI and then all arm64'ness is abstracted away... Can just use normal debian installer
<stikonas> (with grub, etc...)
<hmuller> stikonas: pastebin a working u-boot .config for the rockpro64 and I will test that
<hmuller> I already have a solution but I will test yours too
<stikonas> hmuller: sure

<hmuller> i see, I'll use that config on v2020.10 and see what happens
<stikonas> how are you installing u-boot?
mmind00 has joined #linux-rockchip
<hmuller> stikonas: are you creating idbloader spi image similar to this: https://pastebin.com/RagAxi7h
<hmuller> stikonas: I have installed u-boot to micro SD card during experimentation and testing, now I am installing it to SPI
<stikonas> hmuller: yes, similar, but the script I pastebin'ed has a bit more
<stikonas> it also creates image with correct offsets
<stikonas> that you can just flash with dd to /dev/mtdblock0
<stikonas> 2020.08 also has a fairly new dtb file, unless you need usb-c support (from kernel 5.9) then it's good enough
<hmuller> I put the idbloader spi image and u-boot.itb in FAT partition and manually write it to SPI NOR at u-boot prompt
<stikonas> oh ok...
<stikonas> now I always flash from within OS...
<stikonas> although, I guess if something breaks I might need to do it from u-boot
<stikonas> anyway, that spi_combined.img is just idbloader and u-boot.itb concatenated with correct offsets, nothing more
<hmuller> cool, It's time to make dinner. I'll be away for a bit, but will test your config (with arm64 netinst installer) and report back
