<corecode> nothing visible on the serial console when it disappears
<MoeIcenowy> disappear on ethernet?
<corecode> no, completely
<corecode> no reaction on the serial port either

<codekipper> wens: Hi, noticed you've pushed some Orange Pi flavour fexs to the sunxi-board git
<codekipper> do you know if it's possible to read the fex from the eMMC after booting with mainline using dd and some offsets?
<KotCzarny> you mean from android emmc?
<codekipper> yep
<KotCzarny> as long you have sd/mmc support, yes
<codekipper> followed the instructions in the commit for one of the orange pi fex

<codekipper> was just think there could be another way
<codekipper> it's for the Beelink X2 and there is a fex already available for it on the armbian git

<tkaiser> willmore: The only advantage A64 has compared to H5 is PMIC support (battery support). But since recently NanoPi M64 appeared without battery connector I would assume that this A64 is lead by stupidity (Allwinner's business units /management obviously failing to understand anything beyond their traditional Android markets and now partnering with Microsoft to promote 'Windows IoT' with A64 devices)

<willmore> tkaiser, I was guessing you wouldn't be fond of another A64 board. :)
<MoeIcenowy> A64 have too less USB controllers
<jelle> o/
<tkaiser> willmore: Just scratching my head why these devices appear. Maybe there's some 'partner program' by Allwinner or even Microsoft?
<willmore> tkaiser, I fear you may be right. Or Allwinner can't sell them to tablet makers and they need to dump them.
<willmore> MoeIcenowy, don't let KotCzarny hear you say that. :)
<MoeIcenowy> willmore: why?
<MoeIcenowy> it's a fact
<willmore> In English 'countable' things are "fewer". "less" is for things that are not countable.
<MoeIcenowy> ah-oh...
<willmore> They made the comment back in the log. ;)
<MoeIcenowy> I forgot USB controller is countable...
<willmore> Don't worry about it, English has so many rules, I think half of them conflict with the other half.
<MoeIcenowy> willmore: I agree that A64 failed to be sold as tablet SoCs
<willmore> MoeIcenowy, I would trust your judgement on that. You're a bit closer to the flow of devices than I
<MoeIcenowy> about half a month ago I went to Huaqiang North, Shenzhen to check the white-branded tablet market there, and found no A64 at all
<MoeIcenowy> nearly all new Allwinner tablets are A33
<MoeIcenowy> I mentioned it here that day
<MoeIcenowy> (P.S. I bought a "VR device" with H8 there
<willmore> That's what I was remembering.
<MoeIcenowy> yes ;-)
<MoeIcenowy> and there's also few stocks for older SoCs, e.g. A31 or even A10 ;-)
<willmore> So, my A64 theory has some merit.
<willmore> Maybe we can just call it a conspiracy theory. ;)
<MoeIcenowy> or we may say "Allwinner packages to many sun50iw1p1 dies as A64 and they cannot be sold out" ;-)
<MoeIcenowy> but sun8iw5p1 dies are sold well as both A33 and R16 ;-)
<tkaiser> https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/iot/explore/deviceoptions : 'While Microsoft has engineered support for IoT Core with specific SoCs that enable hundreds of devices, several companies have independently enabled support for IoT Core on their devices with additional SoCs to address the broad needs of the IoT market'
<tkaiser> So Allwinner chose A64 for their Windows 10 IoT adventures, strange since it should be R18 instead ;)
foxx_ has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]

<willmore> MoeIcenowy, Since the A64 doesn't share a die with anyone else, they're kind of stuck.
mosajjal has joined #linux-sunxi
<tkaiser> willmore: A64 is also called R18 but I've no idea whether there are real products with R18 around
<MoeIcenowy> yes A64 is also R18
<tkaiser> MoeIcenowy: But responsible engineering team doesn't even mention R18: https://github.com/tinalinux/linux-3.4/issues/1#issuecomment-257210599
<MoeIcenowy> they seem to abandoned
<MoeIcenowy> maybe the A team is now working on WinIoT
<MoeIcenowy> as they cannot sell A64 ;-)
<tkaiser> MoeIcenowy: How stupid am I? Overread r18 completely, they *did* mention it.
<MoeIcenowy> hahahahahahahaha
<tkaiser> But IMO this tinalinux thing is a clear sign that they've no idea how to address IoT developer demands. Not the brightest future for Allwinner IMO.
<MoeIcenowy> To be honest I think Allwinner happened to be the most open one in cheap SoCs ;-)
<MoeIcenowy> at least { while(1) puts("much "): } better than MTK ;-)
<tkaiser> MoeIcenowy: Sure but I would believe their management has not the slightest idea what to do in their 'new markets'. But anyway... shouldn't change that much for us since I doubt they'll ever get the more they support linux-sunxi community the better/faster adoption of their designs happens.
<MoeIcenowy> yes
<MoeIcenowy> they are not good at using such advantages ;-)
<MoeIcenowy> as my team leader said "they got used to Shenzhen mode and do not know how to change it even they have the ability"
<jelle> MoeIcenowy: did you have experience with dts overlays?
<corecode> how difficult is it to buy allwinner SoCs to build custom boards?
<Wizzup> ask olimex :)
<corecode> they buy thousands
<Wizzup> they sell them.
<jelle> hmm seems I'm missing the -@ option for dtc, but somehow that's not a valid option in dtc 1.4.2 ..
<corecode> just the chips?
<jelle> oh I need dtc-git..
<corecode> no H3 :(
<MoeIcenowy> jelle: nope
<corecode> ah no, they do have it
<corecode> ah nice
<corecode> Wizzup: thank you!
<MoeIcenowy> corecode: on Alibaba it costs ~5~8 dollars for one piece of AW SoC
<MoeIcenowy> if only for example
<beeble> do not expect esd compliant packaging :)
<MoeIcenowy> for mass it may be more cheap
