<MoeIcenowy> sunshavi: I'm just conservative
<MoeIcenowy> and don't want to burn users' chip
<sunshavi> MoeIcenowy: yes. But have been in armbian 4 some time. The systems seems a little bit slower. armbian runs at 1296 Mhz o smth similar
<sunshavi> And At that speed It is ok
<MoeIcenowy> mainline thermal driver is not available yet
<MoeIcenowy> so we must be cautious
<sunshavi> mmm. Then that's a good reason. :)
<sunshavi> B
<sunshavi> this page http://linux-sunxi.org/Linux_mainlining_effort needs an update about 4.18 (2 merged)
<sunshavi> MoeIcenowy: btw "phdeswer" is running his board at 1296 with mainline without isssues
<MoeIcenowy> it's possible to introduce thermal patchs
<MoeIcenowy> but as mainline doesn't have them merged
<MoeIcenowy> I can only do the most conservative thing
<MoeIcenowy> If my memory is right, embed-3d hadn't send new revision of the patchset for a long time
<sunshavi> Yes. And It also have several board with H3, with different thermal properties
<wens> sunshavi: problem is there's no thermal protection in the kernel right now, and not all people put heatsinks on their chips
<sunshavi> wens: understood. But I had to ask it. cos i was checking it CPUFREQS feature on mainline
<sunshavi> this board is shaping fine 4 mainline
<MoeIcenowy> wens: e.g. me ;-)
<MoeIcenowy> I heat the idea that a heatsink should be installed
<MoeIcenowy> except it's installed in the factory
<MoeIcenowy> or come as a required accessory
<MoeIcenowy> (in this situation I will think the board designer requires a heatsink, so I'll do it
<wens> I like the huge heatsink with Libretech boards :)
<MoeIcenowy> wens: oh my Libretech boards do not come with them
<wens> my first one did, then I bought two more for my other boards
<willmore> wens, the ODROID-C2?
<wens> willmore: that's hardkernel
* willmore agrees with MoeIcenowy to play it safe. Especially with no thermal throttling ability.
<willmore> wens, yes, I meant the big old heatsink on the board.
<wens> willmore: well, compared to that one, it's not huge
<willmore> I can run it with no forced air at 1.72GHz running four cores of cpuburn all day and it gets up to 72C.
<willmore> The libretech one was bigger? Yay!
<willmore> I love heatsinks. :)
<wens> willmore: I meant the libretech one is smaller
<willmore> Oh, sorry. I really do like the C2. :)
<willmore> It's like fire vs grass. It's very effective.
<wens> as you can see, it's not nearly as large as the one on the C2, but still quite effective
<willmore> Oh, that's not bad. But, you're right, the C2 is bigger.
<MoeIcenowy> oh you heatsink monsters
<willmore> It's better than those fake nail type press on ones they sell for Rpi boards. :)
<willmore> Sorry, MoeIcenowy didn't mean to offend. :)
<wens> the contrast on the C2 picture is terrible, but it seems it's also thicker, and has more fins
<MoeIcenowy> I mean the heatsinks ;-)
<willmore> It does and it does. It's black on black, so it's hard to take a good picture.
<MoeIcenowy> e.g. the one on Libretech
<wens> willmore: those still work up to a certain extent. I use them for most of my other boards, since they don't have heatsink mounting holes
<MoeIcenowy> In fact there is a board that doesn't come without preinstalled heatsink
<MoeIcenowy> Nano Pi NEO2
GrimKriegor has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<wens> A lot of the old cubies and bananapis don't have heatsinks
<MoeIcenowy> ooooooooooooooooooooooooops
<willmore> The contrast is poor, but that board is the same size as an Rpi. The heatsink is big and is *not* an option.
<wens> and even a 15x15x15mm one doesn't work well for bpi-m2+ :(
<MoeIcenowy> wens: what version of m2+?
<MoeIcenowy> I think pre-release samples use 1.4V vdd-cpu, and release ones use 1.3V
<wens> MoeIcenowy: H3 or H5, doesn't matter :)
<MoeIcenowy> but H5 boards should all come with 1.3V
<wens> MoeIcenowy: I have it in a case, and it heats up like crazy
<MoeIcenowy> (but 1.3V is also too high for H5
<wens> maybe I should drill some holes ...
<MoeIcenowy> I suggested them to low down to 1.2V or 1.1V on H5 board
<MoeIcenowy> but get refused
<willmore> We need cogent to make a case/heatsink for it.
<MoeIcenowy> wens: plastic or metal?
<wens> MoeIcenowy: official plastic clear case
<MoeIcenowy> I think BPi has released a metal case
<MoeIcenowy> (with an antenna
<wens> willmore: cogent? (me thinks of ISP)
<willmore> A fellow over on the #odroid channel who has a machine shop and makes all metal cases/heatsinks for the ODROID boards.
<willmore> That used to be one big block of Al. There's room to put some thermal grease on the CPU and stick it into the case.
<willmore> IIRC, there's room for a thermal pad on the bottom case part so that it squishes the CPU to the top part nicely.
<wens> MoeIcenowy: I see them, but don't think they're any better for ventilation :(
<MoeIcenowy> wens: would you work for R40 sata?
<MoeIcenowy> I think maybe I should work on it, but now I have no spare HDDs
<wens> MoeIcenowy: I don't have plans yet
<wens> MoeIcenowy: me neither :(
<wens> I can probably dig some out from my day job though
<MoeIcenowy> (one is given to my dad, and the other is lended to my friend
<MoeIcenowy> ah I don't think it's possible for a BPi to power up 3.5" HDD ;-)
<willmore> Don't you have a local computer service store?
<willmore> They often have lots of parts lying around.
<willmore> Old laptop hard drives from dead machines, upgrades, etc.

<miasma> does the R_I2C mean hardware managed i2c?
<anarsoul|3> miasma: restricted i2c
<anarsoul|3> IIRC idea is that only ATF (or any other privileged firmware) can manage it, but it's *usually* not enforced on sunxi platforms and thus Linux can access it as well
