<megi> so I've closed up my pocketbook adventure for a bit now, next when I'll have some time, I'll have to dump registers and try figure out what's up with mmc0 not working in mainline linux, and why the board shuts down when I enable LDO3/wifi reguklator
<megi> looks like the eink driver code is available in various BSP repos for other socs
<megi> and touchscreen driver is mainline, but may need some OF support patches
<megi> so aside from the eink this device should have full mainline linux support

<sunshavi> megi: this pocketbook device could be the first one with mainline support?
<megi> looks like, but it's a slightly modified A13 EVB design, I suppose
<megi> so not much new under the sun
<megi> I didn't write any code just yet and it mostly works :) It's all DTS and configs
<sunshavi> great. I have been digging on the web. where did You got it?. I have only found {Pocketbook Touch Lux 4 - black 119}
<megi> it's my gf's device from 2015
<KotCzarny> most of those a13 e-readers are similar
<sunshavi> one hundred nineteen is the price
<KotCzarny> they mostly differ in e-ink controller/case only
<megi> it's still available from secondhand sources
<sunshavi> mmm. my jailbroken kindle died last year (I need a replacement)
<KotCzarny> if you plan on hacking your own, sure
<KotCzarny> otherwise run away from them
<KotCzarny> crappy legacy reader app
<megi> the most interesting thing will be to get the eink driver working on mainline
<KotCzarny> havent checked the ones running some android
<sunshavi> KotCzarny: nice. but most of the time. I just put PDF an epub files on it
<sunshavi> by cable
<KotCzarny> megi: e-ink bringup isnt hard, controller datasheets are available
<sunshavi> KotCzarny: leste on this device?
<KotCzarny> sunshavi: e-ink isnt well suited
<KotCzarny> usually you just run directfb single app
<KotCzarny> preferably intelligent one with partial updates
<sunshavi> KotCzarny: "crappy legacy reader app" -> there are not good opensource replacements?
<KotCzarny> megi: fbtft might have some nice code to reuse if you decide to write a driver for it
<diego71> some kobo are easily rooted, but have a bsp kernel
JohnDoe_71Rus has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> sunshavi: it has to implement own drawing routines, as there is no x (and shouldnt be)
<megi> KotCzarny: I've found the original messy driver code online
<megi> I just don't get why it has to be so huge
<KotCzarny> firmware?
<megi> driver for eink, it's like 5000 lines of code
<KotCzarny> firmware files are called waveforms
<KotCzarny> for some reason
<megi> I noticed
<sunshavi> KotCzarny: well. Perhaps a crowfunding. :)
<KotCzarny> btw. backup it, as they arent very compatible between different screens
<megi> ok
<KotCzarny> i've found it hard way on my nolimbook
<KotCzarny> which has nand instead of sdcard
<megi> ouch
<megi> double ouch
<sunshavi> megi: Perhaps the mesi driver needs some care
<KotCzarny> and i ran some 'rooter' app that added ssh
<KotCzarny> but it also nuked original waveform
<megi> mesi?
<KotCzarny> which resulted in eink driver oopsing hard
<KotCzarny> later i've bought second nolimbook and restored the file
<KotCzarny> :)
<sunshavi> s/mesi/messy/
<aalm> sounds like
<KotCzarny> btw. running mainline on it might be problematic for another reason
<MoeIcenowy> KotCzarny: fortunately it's not panel specific ;-)
<KotCzarny> lack of sleep for a13
<megi> KotCzarny: I don't think it uses sleep
<KotCzarny> original app sleeps 99.9% of the time
<megi> the original code
<megi> it just turns off after a while
<KotCzarny> thats how it advertised 30 days of reading
<megi> ah
<megi> I could console around for quite a while whitout it sleeping on me
<KotCzarny> without sleeping it would probably go dry in few hours
<KotCzarny> btw. disable wifi, then you will see
<megi> it consumes just ~90mA
<KotCzarny> with wifi on sleep routine is disabled
<megi> it didn't sleep even with wifi off
<megi> maybe serial console blocks it too
<KotCzarny> on mine it wakes every few seconds, checks for events, and goes to sleep again
<KotCzarny> so app seems laggy, but it conserves a lot of power probably
<KotCzarny> maybe samba prevents the sleep
<KotCzarny> :)
<megi> I guess it can do about 12h without sleep
<megi> on 1500mAh battery
<megi> it has some mxp chip (not yet identified) + some pmic specially for eink display, and I still don't understand how it's all connected on board, what protocol it uses
<megi> it all looks like some gpio twiggling + perhaps SPI
<megi> but in fex it seems to be described as a part of a lcd0 interface
lkcl has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<megi> so bah, a bit confusing on what HW interface is really used
jstefanop has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> mine uses this one http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tps65185.pdf
<megi> yeah, that's the PMIC
<megi> pocketbook uses this one too
<KotCzarny> most likely a reference design
<KotCzarny> ;)
<megi> that looks like the simpler part :)
<megi> hopefully
<KotCzarny> you can buy some other a13 second hand cheaply
<KotCzarny> bookeen muse etc use it
<KotCzarny> early models
<KotCzarny> might be rebranded to heck
reinforce has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<sunshavi> kotczarny: "might be rebranded to heck" which reminds me I have just replaced the broken screen from an A10 table with android 4.0.4 that somebody gifted me. I have chk online that It could run ubuntu
<KotCzarny> if the screen costed more than 10usd it wasnt worth
<KotCzarny> :)
<sunshavi> 5$
<KotCzarny> good deal then
megi has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<willmore> KotCzarny, regarding the ebook 'firmware' being called 'waveforms' is becuse it is literally a meta-language describing the waveform needed to draw things on the display and the most important aspect of that is how long the pulses need to be and how long they need to be separated--so waveform timing.
* willmore has a broken android 'netbook' thing that predates willmore's awareness of linux-sunxi, what chip might it use? Probably a mediatek.... But it will boot from SD, so maybe not...
<MoeIcenowy> willmore: it could be AW
<MoeIcenowy> disassemble it?
<KotCzarny> boot sdcard-fel
<KotCzarny> if it switches to fel mode, it's sunxi
<KotCzarny> :)

<ixnus> I have collected all A13 ereaders I could find through internet search
<ixnus> and rebrands.
<ixnus> The last one might be running android.
<ixnus> Now there is a lot of ereaders with this https://linux-sunxi.org/E200
<ixnus> but it is ARM9 I don't know its mainline status.
