<matteoelimo> hello all! does anybody know whether the mainlining state table is up to date for the Allwinner S3?
<matteoelimo> it seems there is no ADC, I2C and MIPI/CSI support, is it still the case?
<matteoelimo> sorry if it's a naive question, I've been using the A13 for years and I'm only looking at the S3 since... yesterday =)

<Ixnus> matteoelimo: do you have S3 device or plan to get one ?
<matteoelimo> we are designing one =)
<matteoelimo> at the moment we have a V3s prototype
<matteoelimo> the idea is to have a small SoM with M2 form factor to use as a central module for generic designs
<matteoelimo> given the fact that it doesn't need external DRAM and it's cheap
<matteoelimo> the plan is to release it as OSHW
<Ixnus> Oh, nice! I2C is marked as done for 4.11 in table.
<matteoelimo> yes, I2C seems ok
<matteoelimo> I was looking at I2S and mistyped it =)
<matteoelimo> sorry

<Ixnus> You are lucky just yesterday the MIPI-CSI suport for A83T was posted, V3s/S3 is probably very similar and easy to add.
<matteoelimo> ahah
<matteoelimo> really!? that is lucky indeed
<matteoelimo> one step closer
dev1990 has joined #linux-sunxi
<matteoelimo> that sounds promising... I'll try to compare the datasheets to see what are the chances that code can be ported
<Ixnus> links to the datasheets for whom may look for them
<Ixnus> According to the block diagram there is i2S/PCM
<Ixnus> Two S3 devices are coming Pinecube by Pine64 and S3-Olinuxino by Olimex - both will help fmprove software support.
<Ixnus> So far there is just no devices - only not-hacker-friendly V3 cameras
<matteoelimo> thanks, I have the S3 DS... downloading the A83T now
<matteoelimo> yup, we also hope that Pine64 and Olimex getting on the platform will help with software support
<matteoelimo> we wouldn't be competing with them of course (we're tiny!), the idea is to release an OSHW that is more a "building block" than the Pinecube/S3-Olinuxino
<matteoelimo> those are closer to complete solutions and therefore more opinionated
<Ixnus> the V3/V3s/S3/S3L column in the tabler and mainline kernel work was done by MoeIcenowy:
<matteoelimo> we thing that having something like Olimex's A13-SOM, but for S3, would be useful
<Ixnus> MoeIcenowy: do you know if the table is correct - the i2s and adc part?
<Ixnus> I like your idea and wish you luck matteoelimo:
<Ixnus> I'm not HW engineer but I believe routin the DRAM is the hardest part in designing a board.
<Ixnus> And co-packeged RAM does it for you, not to mention that it save space :)
<matteoelimo> AND cost =)
<Ixnus> Do you have something public where I can follow your progress?
<matteoelimo> kinda
<matteoelimo> we have our blog where we just posted a teaser
<matteoelimo> it's still VERY early days, we just finished routing the PCBs for the module and a carrier board

<jernej> matteoelimo: I2S should be easy to add - DT nodes (for I2S controller and another for codec) and small clock driver improvement
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_
<jernej> hm... looking at datasheet, I can't find any information regarding I2S which can complicate things
<jernej> are you sure it's supported?
<Ixnus> jernej: that is the question It is marked as N/A in the http://linux-sunxi.org/Linux_mainlining_effort#Status_Matrix and I think that column was entirely done by MoeIcenowy
xes__ has joined #linux-sunxi
xes_ has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<jernej> well, then it's not supported, I guess
<Ixnus> The block diagram of the S3 brief has I2S/PCM in the bottom corner.
<Ixnus> It's either missing in the datasheet or in the silicon :)
<jernej> problem is that there is zero required information - register base, dma channels, clocks, etc.
matteoscordino[m has joined #linux-sunxi
<jernej> is there full S3 datasheet available?
<matteoelimo> jernej: we have rev 1.0 of the datasheet and it has a section on I2S
<jernej> ok, V3 datasheet has I2S listed
<matteoelimo> the DS we have is from Sochip, not Allwinner directly
<Ixnus> where did you get yours from? I posted 2 links a few messages back
<jernej> ah, sorry, missed that
<matteoelimo> Ixnus: it seems to be the same one to me
<matteoelimo> it first mentions I2S on page 28
<matteoelimo> and then you have the gory details from page 343
<Ixnus> ^^
<jernej> based on quick look, I2S seems compatible to that in H3
<jernej> so yeah, not much to do to enable it
<jernej> oh, dma is also missing (important for I2S)
<matteoelimo> yes, I would expect them to recycle as much as they can among SoCs, especially for this kind of standard/low speed stuff
<jernej> but that is also a minor thing to add at this stage
<jernej> I recently made this work (DMA, I2S, clock fix) for R40 (not pushed anywhere yet)
<matteoelimo> is it mostly dts work? or did you have to patch code as well?
Ixnus has quit [Quit: Ping timeout (120 seconds)]
<matteoelimo> I am eager to do some work on it, but until now I haven't gone much past adapting dts files on the A13
<jernej> I'll push it shortly to gh
<jernej> yes, mostly DT work with some minor driver updates
<jernej> important commits for I2S: "clk r40 audio" - I think you can make same change to V3s clock driver
<jernej> also dma dts and drv commits
<jernej> and sample of I2S node is in "r40 hdmi audio wip"
jbrown has joined #linux-sunxi
<matteoelimo> that's very useful
<matteoelimo> out of curiousity, how do you go about testing this? do you patch a kernel on a pre-existing build system (buildroot?) or do you just build a uboot+kernel and flash that?
<jernej> depends what I'm doing
<jernej> in this particular instance, I export patches to file and add it to LibreELEC build system
<jernej> and just build R40 image
<jernej> in some other cases I have Arch rootfs on SD card with U-Boot and netboot it over tftp
<matteoelimo> ah, ok. that makes sense. It's similar to what I've been doing for the A13: customise an OpenWRT build, flash that
<jernej> that's quickest way to test features you are not sure you got it right
<jernej> (I mean netboot)
<matteoelimo> yeah, I see. No reflashing
Ixnus has joined #linux-sunxi
<Ixnus> Is it ok to change info in wiki mark I2S present in the SoC ?
<jernej> it would be cool if someone can actually confirm it on V3s
<[TheBug]> its a wiki so if you see a change that needs made, go ahead, if later found inaccurate someone will revert your change , if its valid will be left
<[TheBug]> jernej: problem is who actually has v3s, I probably one of the few people with one
<[TheBug]> lol
<jernej> V3s, S3 and V3 have same die if I'm not mistaken
<jernej> but if I2S makes sense or not for V3s it depends if pins are actually exposed or not
<[TheBug]> I have LicheePi Zero, you feel motivated to make a image for it that allows testing of whatever you want I am happy to test, but I only have the most basic kernel I compiled working on them so far
<jernej> matteoelimo: it seems V3s specifc DMA driver changes are already made in mainline, you just need to add DT node for it
<[TheBug]> jernej: https://licheepizero.us is my site I put up to archive data for LicheePi Zero
<matteoelimo> [TheBug]: we have a V3s board somewhere in the office (our own design). I could test stuff from Monday
<[TheBug]> matteoelimo: interesting, have any pictures of your design or is it classified
lurchi_ is now known as lurchi__
<[TheBug]> ps
<matteoelimo> not classified at all, but there is very little info in our portfolio
<matteoelimo> we have a separate blog post about it
<matteoelimo> but it's never progressed much, it was an old thing we did mostly to get our feet wet with Allwinner
<matteoelimo> let mi find the link
<matteoelimo> [TheBug]: https://simonrichards.com/v3s/
<[TheBug]> interesting
<matteoelimo> that's the personal blog of my co-founder
<[TheBug]> I actually like that layout a little better
<matteoelimo> wow, that sounds pretentious. let's call him my friend
<matteoelimo> [TheBug]: better than which one?
<[TheBug]> liceheepizero.us
<[TheBug]> er I can't type today
<[TheBug]> the LicheePi Zero is what I was comparing
<[TheBug]> can seem images there on my page
<[TheBug]> s/seem/see
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_
<matteoelimo> [TheBug]: well, they seem to be laid out for very different purposes
<matteoelimo> our V3s board is big and fat to be easy to play around with, no intention to actually use it in a product
<matteoelimo> the LicheePi is much more compact
<[TheBug]> yeah
<matteoelimo> and the castellation would help with integration
<Ixnus> jernej: while tinkering with r40 would you take a look at HDMI-CEC and IR , they would be nice with KODI ?
<jernej> Ixnus: CEC doesn't work on R40 for some reason, similar to H5
<jernej> I have no idea why
<jernej> problem is that CEC was never implemented on BSP, so it's a bit hit or miss
<jernej> and thanks for reminding me about IR, I didn't notice that it's missing
<jernej> I also have to add analog codec, should be easy too
<Ixnus> So CEC is broken on H5 ? Then it's more inaccuracies in the wiki progress table...
<Ixnus> SPDIF on R40 ?
<jernej> well, CEC is a bit strange everywhere
<jernej> I disabled HW controller and added SW emulation for all 40 nm SoCs on same pins
<jernej> in LE
<jernej> otherwise it semi-worked
<jernej> it seems that AW make some mistake in glue logic
<jernej> but problem with SW emulation is that it's sensitive on CPU load and it doesn't work well with DVFS
<jernej> enabled
<jernej> I never worked with SPDIF...

matteoscordino[m has joined #linux-sunxi
<Ixnus> yeah that sucks (about CEC)
<[TheBug]> matteoelimo: well thank you for sharing about your board :) I am headed out for a bit, bbl
<matteoelimo> [TheBug]: sharing this is part of our project. we would love to create a little community around it =)
<jernej> Ixnus: on the other hand, on H6 CEC works well, no SW emulation needed
