<ullbeking> what's the most interesting orange pi these days? perhaps one with a rockchip, or maybe sticking with the good old h616 or h5?
<ullbeking> the sales rep. is sending me an updated catalog and i think it would be reasonable to ask for a free evaluation board considering how much money i have spent on OPi's over the years.

<apritzel> jernej: Hi, any idea on how to best teach the sun8i-emac driver to use 0x34 for the second emac clock register on the H616 EMAC1?
<apritzel> jernej: I extended the syscon driver to export two registers on the H616, but was wondering what would be best to tell the EMAC driver about it?
<apritzel> jernej: Just an (optional) clock offset property in the EMAC node? Or somehow exploiting the DT's "cells" feature, like "<&syscon 1>;"?

<clementp[m]> ullbeking: what do you want to achieve ?
<ullbeking> clementp[m]: it would be good to have *real* SATA interfaces (not USB-to-SATA), and perhaps even turn it into a tiny little NAS. i'd like which has better upstream kernel support too.
<KotCzarny> your best bet is some m2/pcie interface and addon card
<ullbeking> KotCzarny: i've seen those, you mean those ribbon-type things?
<KotCzarny> huh?
<KotCzarny> this kind of things
<ullbeking> KotCzarny: link doesn't work :-(
<karlp> pretty tired of "Oh nos, if only it had sata" on ~ every board since the dawn of time.
<KotCzarny> just google minipcie sata marvel or similar
<karlp> doesn't seem to be really getting in the wya of anyone
<KotCzarny> karlp: how about 'if it only had noncripple pcie port' ?
<karlp> well, there's supe rfew that hve one at all,
<karlp> the "where's my sata!" has been ranting for years.
<ullbeking> KotCzarny: how does such Marvel mini-PCIe SATA get installed on an H3/H5/H6 or Rockchip OPi? I have not looked at SBC's for most of 2020 as i've been looking after my daughter full time, and just now getting back into it.
<KotCzarny> forget about pcie on allwinner tho
<KotCzarny> it's in the 'cripple' category

<BorgCuba> apritzel, I tested the h616 versions of uboot und kernel on my h313 device. Both worked
<apritzel> BorgCuba: oh great, thanks!
<BorgCuba> thanks for making it work ;-)
<apritzel> do we have a definite list of differences between 313 and 616?
<BorgCuba> I dont
<apritzel> I remember a video decoder resolution limit
<apritzel> BorgCuba: what's you device again? some TV box, right?
<BorgCuba> yes, it is called "x96q"
<BorgCuba> somebody already created a wiki page for that device
<apritzel> oh right, this one
AneoX has quit [Quit: Textual IRC Client: www.textualapp.com]
<BorgCuba> very cheap
<BorgCuba> has only two usb ports
<apritzel> which seems to be quite standard for those TV boxes
<apritzel> I think the DRAM is limited to only 2GB, IIRC
<apritzel> BorgCuba: which DT do you use? AFAICT the regulators are more tricky on this SoC, so just using a "close enough" DT is somewhat dangerous here
asdf28 has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
faruk has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<BorgCuba> apritzel, I used the orangepi dt
<BorgCuba> there is an axp305 on the board
asdf28 has joined #linux-sunxi
asdf28 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<apritzel> BorgCuba: do you have any more information about it? The bootlog is pretty silent on the regulators, earlier boards were more verbose on this topic
<apritzel> BorgCuba: I mean about the voltages and rails used, the AXP305 itself is known and the same as on the OPi Zero2
<BorgCuba> Hmm, the regulator / pm-ic is an axp305. Do you mean the voltage values or what kind of information?
<BorgCuba> Okay
<BorgCuba> Actually I dont have more information. I could measure the voltages.
<apritzel> I guess that's somewhat tricky, on those tiny pins on a live system
<BorgCuba> indeed
<apritzel> reading the PMIC registers sounds more promising, but it's a bit tricky with the BSP kernel as well, I guess

<ullbeking> BorgCuba: which is the H313 device? Is the H616 the OPi Zero 2?
<BorgCuba> ullbeking, the h313 device is this one: https://linux-sunxi.org/X96Q
t3st3r has joined #linux-sunxi
<apritzel> The X96Q TV box has an H313, the OrangePi Zero2 has an H616
<ullbeking> BorgCuba: apritzel: i've been a fan of OPi for several years, I'm considering getting an OPi Zero2. what are your impressions of it?
<apritzel> ullbeking: it's a cute little device, quite a good price/performance ratio
<apritzel> definitely for the 15 GBP I paid for it, but AFAIK this introductory price is now gone
<ullbeking> apritzel: yeah, 15 GBP is what I would *expect* to pay for it. i'm surprised it's significantly higher.
<apritzel> it was 15 GBP shipped, for the 1GB version, which is quite a good offer, with Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI
<apritzel> I think the 1GB version is gone for now, they have the 512MB version still

<ullbeking> does the OPi Zero2 naturally fit the same use cases as the X96Q?
<BorgCuba> well, the x96q doesnt have the headers

<apritzel> ullbeking: they are actually quite different: those TV boxes (X96Q, Tanix TX6s, T95) all have 100Mbit Ethernet, no header pins, but eMMC and 2 or 4GB of DRAM
ldevulder_ has joined #linux-sunxi
<apritzel> the OrangePi Zero2 is the classic small devboard: it has Gbit Ethernet, quite some header pins, but only SD card and 512MB or 1GB of DRAM, and is better documented (schematic, BSP kernel source, etc)
<ullbeking> apritzel: nice one! sounds like a good one. the specs are impressive and i've pretty much literally just now been convinced to order one from Ali.
<ullbeking> do you think it needs a heatsink?
ldevulder has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<apritzel> ullbeking: dunno, it's said to be cooler than the previous SoCs, but I haven't used it in anger (or actually beyond 888MHz at all)
<ullbeking> apritzel: i'll order one anyway at the same time i'm ordering (plus case, OTG cable, and wall plug charger)
<apritzel> ullbeking: just keep in mind that the AliExpress offers are only the 512MB version, atm
<BorgCuba> 640kb should be more then enough, nobody will ever need more
<apritzel> Oh, is there an ARM-DOS? ;-) How do we emulate the A20 gate, then?
<apritzel> but seriously it all depends on what you want to do with it: if it's more like a beefed-up micro-controller use case, then 512M might indeed be more than enough
<kilobyte> running a general-purpose distribution on too little memory sucks: swap on SD cards feels like a floppy
<gnarface> zram swap rules!
<apritzel> if you are short on RAM, just buy a machine with more memory
