yeah, but that would assume I hadn't already dd'd the boot partition :D

aha, USB actually works on the OrangePi Zero2, in Linux, it was indeed a power issue
<apritzel>
powering via a proper USB-C power supply (giving up my beloved FEL) fixed the issues, also using one of the USB ports on the header pins works (even with dodgy power)
<apritzel>
and it always worked with the BSP kernel and in U-Boot, so I guess mainline draws more current, which makes the voltage drop below even more
<apritzel>
jernej: ^^^
<jernej>
interesting, I actually powered my board via phone charger, but usb didn't work
<jernej>
I'll test that again soon
<Ashleee>
I've had kernel freeze right as it was switching runit from stage 1 to stage 2 when using a bad USB cable :)
lurchi__ is now known as lurchi_
<Ashleee>
always though. I even rebuilt u-boot, atf and kernel... before trying a different USB cable :)
<apritzel>
Ashleee: yeah, those cables can be amazingly bad

and the confusing part is that it works to some degree (thanks to the PMIC), until some higher load pushes it over the edge
<apritzel>
for instance I had a kernel config with the performance governor as the default, that crashed pretty quickly, but ondemand worked much longer
<Ashleee>
ooh I have here SOpine clusterboard but the DC power jack was somewhat lose. So when somebdoy ran past (cats) in the room (even 2m distant) it would sometimes drop 0.2V and random node would die :D
<Ashleee>
after several annoyed days I realized there's normal 5mm header... so I sodlered on a screw terminal, cut off the barrel jack and screwed it right in
<apritzel>
Ashleee: does the clusterboard really have a 5V input?
<Ashleee>
yes
<Ashleee>
5V15A brick came with it :)
<apritzel>
the whole board idea screams 12V to me ...
<Ashleee>
and small switchmode for each board with Diodes Inc chip for about $0.5 next to it...
<Ashleee>
total in parts per node I mean

jernej: did you get device not accepting address x, error -62?
<jernej>
don't remember
<apritzel>
jernej: interestingly I get this when I remove USB support from U-Boot
<apritzel>
adding back USB support makes it work again (without any USB device plugged in at boot time, so U-Boot just tries to enumerate, but doesn't activate anything)
