<DocScrutinizer05> whitequark: the fact that actually it's freenode to actively disclose the IP is a very good point
<DocScrutinizer05> while otoh freenode steps outa their way quite a bit to allow onion
<DocScrutinizer05> aka tor
<DocScrutinizer05> any anybody concerned a tiny bit about their IP may get a cloak in just about 30 min in #dreenode, just for asking politely
nikescar has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<DocScrutinizer05> #freenode actually
nikescar has joined #qi-hardware
<DocScrutinizer05> for all I know nobody could tell about my IP, from IRC (or IRC logs for that matter), nor he could for anybody else with a cloak and the basic knowledge how to login&join
<DocScrutinizer05> but hey, when the gurus decided that way, who are we to prove them wrong? ;-P
<DocScrutinizer05> just wpwrak's argument about discovering links between fast changing nicks is a bit too far
<DocScrutinizer05> if somebody's thinking he can obfuscate his identity (for whatever purpose!) by changing nicknames frequently, then he either knows how to hide his IP as well, or he gets a new IP aka DHCP lease for every new nickname, or he's actually one of those trolls that better are *not* protected by us
<DocScrutinizer05> those who really wanna hide their IP are using tor anyway
<DocScrutinizer05> (even FBI and CIA does ;-P Generally recommended security measure - BWAHAHAHA)
<DocScrutinizer05> they must me pretty concerned somebody in the company could find out where from they're polling their mail accounts
<DocScrutinizer05> wpwrak: btw you're aware 80% of the internet are using a thing called dynamically allocated temporary IP, aka DHCP
<DocScrutinizer05> which in turn means odds are you're assuming relations between actions of completely unrelated individuals, by just joining their google results int one profile, based on the fact they got the same IP assigned by their provider?

<DocScrutinizer05> here in Germany several cases are known where GEMA demanded C&D letters to be signed and fines paid doe mp3-filesharing, when in fact the granny they pestered just been lucky enough to use same IP as some shareazaa-kiddie, just a day later or earlier, and the carrier messed up his protocols who held which DHCP lease when and thus gave false info to GEMA
<DocScrutinizer05> s/doe/for/
<qi-bot> DocScrutinizer05 meant: "here in Germany several cases are known where GEMA demanded C&D letters to be signed and fines paid for mp3-filesharing, when in fact the granny they pestered just been lucky enough to use same IP as some shareazaa-kiddie, just a day later or earlier, and the carrier messed up his protocols who held which DHCP lease when and thus gave false info to GEMA"
<DocScrutinizer05> honestly, googling for IP addresses seems a very poor concept, leading nowhere really
pcercuei has joined #qi-hardware
<DocScrutinizer05> and no matter how much I muse about it, I can't find a single other usecase than just this imaginary incredibly stupid braindamaged troll-kiddie that thinks he could hide his identity by frequent nick change
<DocScrutinizer05> but yeah, filtering IP addr out of chanlogs for sure is the solution, even if we don't have a problem for the solution yet
<wpwrak> DocScrutinizer05: i didn't say fast changing nicks. i mean site/occasion-specific identities. e.g., if you're with your real name on linkedin, foobar123 at a goat porn forum, and with the same IP plus the real name on IRC, you may not like it if the dots are easy to connect
<wpwrak> and yes, i'm aware of dhcp ;-) some ISPs give you new addresses every few hours while others let you keep an address for months if not years
<DocScrutinizer05> ooh, I didn't know goat porn sites and linkedin do also publish IP
<wpwrak> e.g., mine hasn't changed since march
<DocScrutinizer05> sure it helps to keep linkedin and goat porn safe when we filter IPs out of IRC chanlogs
<wpwrak> linkedin is where your real name is used. dunno if there are IPs, too. probably not. the goat lovers on the other hand, ...
<wpwrak> i think the safety of the goat porn lovers makes a refreshing variation on the old "it's for the children !!!" :)
<DocScrutinizer05> aiui google hits are not even timestaped accurately enough to construct *any* relation for user identified via IP
<DocScrutinizer05> sure the timestamps on chanlogs help a lot, but still, where are the timestamps of the linkedin logs, hell where are the logs themselves?
<wpwrak> you may be able to collect additional evidence by other means
<DocScrutinizer05> and, God forbid, users might use GPRS to watch goatse and to IRC, and then you're one of 10,000 behind a huge NAT, usually
<DocScrutinizer05> meh, really
<wpwrak> also, perhaps someone who stubles across your goat porn discussions may hate goat porn so fanatically that they prefer to err on the safe side under all circumstances
<wpwrak> obviously, somewhere there's that fine line between reasonable precautions and paranoia ... :)
<DocScrutinizer05> well, there's just two things to suspect: kyak is a notorious infobot hater, and he managed to kick infobot out of chan
<wpwrak> kyak vs. infobot: 1:0 ;-)
<DocScrutinizer05> [2012-10-13 15:54:12] <kyak> DocScrutinizer05: thanks
<DocScrutinizer05> [2012-10-13 15:54:19] <DocScrutinizer05> np

<DocScrutinizer05> [2012-10-13 15:56:09] [Notice] -ChanServ an #qi-hardware- kyak set flags +Vv on apt.
<DocScrutinizer05> nfc how he managed to make infobot vanish, but evidently bot is gone, and I really hope kyak is happy now
<DocScrutinizer05> pretty good example how you shouldn't moderate a channel
<wpwrak> kyak the great magician ! :-)
<DocScrutinizer05> bwahaha
<wpwrak> the eternal struggle between good and evil is looking good today :)

<gargon> I set yet the timezone in /etc/config/system
<mth> sounds like the hardware clock (RTC) is running in local time instead of UTC
<mth> you could try setting the system clock correctly and then running "hwclock -u --systohc"
