<jkline> I would like to run the tests on rubygems
<jkline> I run `rake test` and get failures because it cannot find 'minitest'
<drbrain> jkline: run `rake newb`
<jkline> so I run `rake deps:fetch`
<jkline> ah, newb
<jkline> ok...
<jkline> same error
<jkline> gem list | ack minitest => minitest (4.7.5, 2.5.1)
<jkline> yet "Could not find 'minitest' (~> 4.0) amount 0 total gems(s)
<drbrain> jkline: RubyGems Pro Tip™: gem list minitest
<jkline> same result, but interestingly I get the same require error in irb...
<jkline> so, more debugging...
<drbrain> yeah
<drbrain> hold on
<jkline> well, for better or worse I "fixed" it and destroyed all forensics by gem uninstall then gem install minitest
<jkline> and by "fixed" I mean, didn't fix :(
<jkline> require 'minitest' now works in irb, but rake test still fails

<jkline> sure
<jkline> I'm going to head home. I'll sign on again, maybe not until Monday. Until then I'll obviously see any comments you leave on the gist more easily than in here. Thanks for your help.
<drbrain> jkline: ok

<shevy> got a question guys... I know that you can specify dependencies in a gem
<shevy> like with: .add_dependency 'foobar'
<shevy> but I think this means that, if that dependency is not matched, gem install will fail and refuse to continue
<shevy> now I have a large project, with several requires, and one component is not important at all. it's ok if a user does not have it installed

<shevy> is there a way to denote a "soft" dependency on a given project, inside of a .gemspec file?
<shevy> or is it an all-or-nothing approach that was taken

<mpapis> shevy, there are no soft dependencies you could try how development dependency would behave in your scenario

<[jamesp]> Hey, mpapis! :)
<[jamesp]> mpapis: The error just started to clear up for me and I can install gems again.
<mpapis> yep, maybe evan is doing some work
<mpapis> samkottler, anything happening in the moment?

<mpapis> drbrain, maybe you know whom to ping about 503s ? I'm getting quite a lot of those
<[jamesp]> bah. getting the 503 again
<indirect> [jamesp]: working on it
<[jamesp]> thanks indirect! Appreciate it.

<shevy> mpapis hmm... let me think for a while... I need to find a project that uses dependencies differentially, like add-ons that would be completely optional ...
<shevy> or perhaps they just don't specify these in .gemspec, I am not yet sure. Will investigate, thanks.
