I am still kinda hoping someday kentonv stumbles across vast riches so he can just personally bankroll Sandstorm without a business plan like the Telegram dude does.
ocdtr_web has quit [Client Quit]
<kentonv>
unfortunately the only way I'm going to get vast riches is by building a business... and the first attempt didn't work out
<isd>
There's also the patreon/similar route. I know at least one person who buys himself a good chunk of time to work on FOSS stuff this way, supplimented with some consulting. Not as glamorous as vast riches, and certainly not any more foolproof than a startup of course...
<isd>
I dunno. I do the consulting thing, largely because I wanted to be hacking on my own stuff most of the time. With software engineer rates it doesn't really take that much to support my lifestyle.
<simpson>
There's the unpleasant truth that people are generally not willing to fund the development of quality software.
<isd>
but I have focus issues.
<isd>
So I have a very green github profile and not a lot of completed projects to show for it :/
<isd>
I kinda ran out of steam on the Haskell capnp library. I got to the point where I had enough of the wrappers for schema.capnp stubbed out manually that I could start working on a code generator, and it was... unpleasant to use. And I struggled trying to come up with a better API for a while, and kinda lost momentum.
<isd>
that seems to always happen.

<simpson>
No worries; that's life.
<matheusrv[m]>
capnpro has IRC?
<isd>
matheusrv[m]: I think this is the most on-topic channel.
<isd>
There's a #haskell-capnp that got set up for my project, but it's just a few of us, and nobody has said anything in a month or two.
<kentonv>
I tried gittip back in the day before patreon replaced it, and I think I was getting $50/week (lol)
<isd>
yeah, my lifestyle isn't *that* cheap :P
<isd>
You'd likely do a bit better now that sandstorm has some brand recognition. But hard to say how much.
<isd>
realistically if you wanted to do something like that it would probably have to take the form of capnp consulting + work on sandstorm as time/funding allows.
<kentonv>
it would presumably take a lot of marketing (consulting would, too), which doesn't excite me. And it feels wrong to even start that marketing while having another job, so I'd have to sort of jump off a cliff and hope to build a plane while I fall...
<isd>
Yeah, which is pretty much what I did (let's see, how long until I go broke...)
<isd>
In my case I got my first customer when I told my boss I was leaving :P
<isd>
but it was scary to start.
<isd>
Anyway, I don't want to sound like I'm pressuring you into anything.
<kentonv>
don't worry, I'm not susceptible to pressure. :)
<kentonv>
I mean, I have thought about this before
<isd>
Yeah, I'd imagine.
<kentonv>
and my best guess is I could make it work, but I don't know if I'd get close to my silicon valley salary.
<isd>
Yeah, I think that's an unrealistic expectation.
<isd>
I never really got used to an expensive lifestyle. When I went from grad school to an extra job I didn't really spend anymore, wasn't hard to say goodbye to the higher pay in favor of more free time.
<isd>
*any more.
<kentonv>
Aside from buying my house (which isn't really spending money, just converting it to a less-liquid form), I don't spend very much either. Video games are a cheap hobby.
<kentonv>
but I have to admit that it feels like there's a paradigm shift just out of reach that is pretty tempting to work towards

hi. just a quick question: are there any groups trying to sort out regular and / or automated update of the apps on the app store?
<newdev>
with the exception of a few apps (like Wekan), the other important apps such as calendar, chat, etc seem out of date
<newdev>
are there any groups of people currently thinking about / trying to do something about it?
<TimMc>
kentonv: Working 3/4 time for a 3/4 Silicon Valley software engineer salary and spend the other time on Sandstorm? :-)
<TimMc>
Not many companies will do it, but it's not unheard of.
<kentonv>
yeah that's not an easy arrangement to come by
