<isd> I made a room alias on matrix, so you can join this channel as #sandstorm:matrix.org, rather than #freenode_#sandstorm:matrix.org
<JacobWeisz[m]> Oooh
<JacobWeisz[m]> Does this make things better somehow in particular?
<JacobWeisz[m]> Or just a shortcut? You spoke of some increased level of bridging on the call.
<isd> Well for one, I always forget if it's supposed to be #freenode_#channel or #channel_#freenode, so there's that.
<isd> I'm still figuring out the details.
<isd> But room aliases in matrix are just that -- aliases
<isd> rooms dont "live" anywhere -- they get replicated to every server that has a user subscribed to it
<isd> and they don't have to have human readable names.
<isd> So I just made an alias for the existing matrix room, which is bridged to the IRC channel
<isd> I also just made a matrix "community" as +sandstorm:matrix.org

<JacobWeisz[m]> Can I join that community? If so I can't figure out how.
<isd> I thought I set it to allow anyone to join.
<JacobWeisz[m]> It could also be a UI issue. I can't even find where I would join.
<isd> Have confirmed the permissions are set the way I thought.
<isd> I'm not really sure if communities do anything but group channels
<isd> So maybe not super important given that we only have one so far.
<JacobWeisz[m]> It looks like Riot plastered their trashy Material Design UI on the iPhone too, so heck knows where anything is.
<JacobWeisz[m]> I just wanna be a part of the club. :'(
<isd> Yeah, I think they're just using the same frontend code on every platform.
<isd> see also: electron
<isd> I started using RiotX on android, which seems to be a bit better on battery.
<JacobWeisz[m]> I'm mildly traumatized by Material on an iPhone. I thought I escaped this.
<isd> There are a couple other clients, you could try one of those: https://matrix.org/clients
<isd> no idea if any of the others are any good.
<ill_logic> Jacob Weisz: I think I only noticed the community join thing the other day, at least in Desktop. It's the very left.
<isd> kentonv: is the format accepted by kj's parseAddress documented anywhere? the comments say it's unspecified from an API perspective, but if I want users to be able to actually supply an address...
<ill_logic> Just kidding, that just lets me look at my currently joined ones or create new ones. I don't see where to find other existing ones to join.
<ill_logic> Man.
<ill_logic> I guess I shouldn't take for granted the resources for UI considerations that normal companies have.
<isd> I've been able to surmise some accepted forms from examples, and I suppose I could just go read the source for the function, but it seems like a good thing to have documented somewhere...
<kentonv> isd, I think the supported formats are ipv4 address with optional port, ipv6 address with optional port (need to surround the address part in [] brackets when providing a port), and unix:<path>
<isd> cool, thanks.
<isd> No hostnames?
<kentonv> oh yeah it supports hostnames in place of addresses
<isd> makes sense.
<kentonv> also supports "*" to mean wildcard (0.0.0.0 / ::)
<kentonv> (for a bind address)
<ill_logic> Ah, so you just click on +sandstorm:matrix.org and it lets you join. And from what I can tell, a "community" is just a filter on rooms. Which is reasonably useful.
<JacobWeisz[m]> Doesn't let me join from that page. I'll take a look on a desktop I guess.
