ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. I'm hoping to get that from the poster and fully reverse it. it's very neat.
<cr1901_modern>
If you can find a source on those metal contacts, let me know. Would be cool to have a template for designing ones own boards
<cr1901_modern>
I've heard of IBM PC peripherals where you attach a board to the 8088 socket
<cr1901_modern>
but nothing quite like this
<whitequark>
these things are simple enough you could just ask a machine shop to stamp some for you
<whitequark>
it's super unlikely someone still makes those
<whitequark>
but... it's a bent piece of metal. a few engineering hours. you could afford tooling up to make these even in the US
<whitequark>
though that would be kind of dumb and a waste of money
<Foone>
welcome to retrotech
<cr1901_modern>
^Yes, that's true
<whitequark>
like, i'm quite sure i could ask around in russia and get a quote for these
<whitequark>
it looks like uh... one simultaneous cutting and stamping operation
<whitequark>
i'm pretty sure that any tool&die shop would be happy to make a die for these with nothing but drawings of the final product
<whitequark>
then you could have a few million of them made
<whitequark>
dunno what for, but you could
<cr1901_modern>
The Amiga community already did that for a very uncommon DB connector
<cr1901_modern>
so def has precedent
<whitequark>
this is like 90% less risk than the connector, or cost
<whitequark>
honestly if you had GOST drawings i'd offer to contact some russian shops
<whitequark>
ISO drawings could work too
<whitequark>
but i'm not going to do the engineering work on these for sure
<cr1901_modern>
Indeed. Uhhh, the patent filer died last year, so I can't ask him. I'll ask around.
<whitequark>
ouch
<whitequark>
probably better to ask an ME to reverse engineer an example
<whitequark>
especially if the drawings are going to be in imperial and to ASME standards, i can't do anything with those and i'm not sure if the usual chinese shops would either
<cr1901_modern>
Yea probably for the best- this was a Texas-based company, according to their website.
<whitequark>
i found that machinists tend to be *really* picky over minor details in drawings
<whitequark>
which is unsurprising if you consider that the drawing is a part of the work contract, basically
<whitequark>
so a drawing that isn't completely clear and done to the right mutually agreed standard is mostly useless, you have to basically redesign the thing based on that drawing as reference
<whitequark>
cr1901_modern: actually, innoventions should still have those design documents. you could try just emailing them
<whitequark>
unlikely they have any IP interest in 30 year old invention
<whitequark>
that they didn't bother paying patent fees for, no less
<cr1901_modern>
Yea, worth a shot. I'll do that tonight and see what happens.
<cr1901_modern>
I can see two possible advantages for hobbyists to have cards like this today:
<cr1901_modern>
1. Especially for the IBM 5150, expansion slots are a limited commodity. Yes, even today.
<cr1901_modern>
2. Less expensive PCBs (for those that don't charge extra for a hole in the center)..

We know so much because the commodore 65 exists, and if you have enough money, YOU TOO could have one! Just bribe one of the few ppl who one one :)

Basically I don't think I'm getting those drawings lmao

Nerionaya: Well, I wouldn't count that as being told to f*** off :)

Anyways, the contacts could be RE'd if I wanted continue down that route. I'm sure I could get the required measurements using a micrometer.
<cr1901_modern>
But... sideclock seems to be rather uncommon, and I don't want to sacrifice an existing specimen
<cr1901_modern>
(speaking of which, I should buy a micrometer... anyone got any suggestions?)
<balrog>
cr1901_modern: do you have calipers?
<balrog>
start with those, they're significantly more versatile and sufficiently accurate 95% of the time (or more)
<cr1901_modern>
balrog: Yes, calipers is what I meant
<cr1901_modern>
Idk why I called it a micrometer (besides same use case)

<andlabs>
not unsurprising
<andlabs>
american companies don't care about their own histor
<andlabs>
I'm not even sure what this is
<cr1901_modern>
It's an expansion card for PC systems with a RTC. The form factor allows you to share the timer w/ another ISA expansion card.
<andlabs>
hm
<cr1901_modern>
Anyways the founder died 6 months ago. I wish I knew about the card then, but I can't attempt to preserve something I don't know about.
<cr1901_modern>
So I'm sad, but there's legitimately nothing I could do about this.
<whitequark>
cr1901_modern: you just need a microwave
<cr1901_modern>
microwave?
<cr1901_modern>
whitequark: I have a microwave, but I currently use the only one I have to heat food :P.
<cr1901_modern>
whitequark: Ooooh, sorry :(. I've still yet to play that one
<cr1901_modern>
I know I know, I need to :P
<whitequark>
i just watched the anime
<cr1901_modern>
I skimmed briefly to avoid spoilers. I already know S;G involves time travel and "what if John Titor was telling the truth"
<whitequark>
what do you mean "if"?!
<cr1901_modern>
I WANT TO BELIEVE :D! But most of his predictions have not come to pass in this timeline.
<cr1901_modern>
(... yet)
<cr1901_modern>
It's no longer on the Wiki page, but I recall reading that the John Titor of this timeline knew stuff about the IBM 5100 that was not public knowledge in 2000 (such that it can be used as a terminal emulator).
<whitequark>
heh
<sorear>
it's 2020, do we have a good way to do photogrammetry with commodity hardware yet and is the precision sufficient
<cr1901_modern>
I would not know, considering I just learned the word "photogrammetry" approximately 10 seconds ago :(
<sorear>
*commodity hardware and FOSS
<andlabs>
uhhh
<andlabs>
we didn't know the 5100 could be used as a terminal emulator in 2000?
<cr1901_modern>
(Unless this website is also part of an elaborate ARG)
<cr1901_modern>
Anyways: I WANT TO BELIEVE, okay :P?
<Foone>
clearly there's a simple answer for all this
<Foone>
john titor was successful, and with his repaired time machine, he avoided all the stuff he was warning us about, so we now live in the disaster-free timeline
<cr1901_modern>
I wouldn't call this timeline disaster-free. But I would agree it could be worse and we are in Titor's debt.
<fseidel>
I like to believe that in hundreds of years, every culture will have its own version of the John Titor myth. In the UK, it's a Microbee. In Japan, it's an FM-8.
<fseidel>
s/UK/Australia
<cr1901_modern>
I think Japan stole the IBM 5100 for S;G?
