<cuttle> alexgordon: DAVE HOLAND
<cuttle> HOLLAND*
<cuttle> this is my fucking jam
<alexgordon> cuttle: dave holland is the deity I worship
<cuttle> prismsmssmsmsm
<cuttle> though i will have to go back through everything else he's done
<cuttle> after listening to this a lot
<cuttle> :p
<alexgordon> cuttle: they're playing here in november http://www.ronniescotts.co.uk/performances/view/1559-dave-holland-prism
<cuttle> aw manannannnn
<alexgordon> I should buy a ticket
<cuttle> yeah you should
<cuttle> :p
<alexgordon> I should!
<cuttle> do it for me
<alexgordon> haha
<cuttle> jazz trio
<cuttle> is the best thing
<cuttle> in existence
Sgeo has joined #elliottcable
<cuttle> alexgordon: you see that chris potter underground thing from locks?
<alexgordon> cuttle: yeah
<cuttle> SO GOOD
<alexgordon> cuttle: eh, no bass :P
<cuttle> haha
<cuttle> well
<cuttle> i love bass, a ton
<cuttle> but
<cuttle> this is like the best thing ever
fwg has quit [Quit: gone]
<alexgordon> cuttle: well as I was saying to locks, I prefer his stuff with dave holland
<cuttle> ah ok
<cuttle> recommend me some albums
<alexgordon> Dave Holland Extended Play is my favourite album ever
<alexgordon> also, the monterey quartet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC0Ov6PwFiI
<prophile> dave holland the bass player?
<cuttle> not available in my coutnryyyyy :/
<cuttle> prophile: yeah
<alexgordon> cuttle -_-
<cuttle> found it on spotify though
<alexgordon> and kenny wheeler what now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4grOslnm4nE
<alexgordon> third one is so relaxing
<alexgordon> why I'm falling asleep already
<cuttle> so much jazz to listen to
<cuttle> :D
<alexgordon> yeah
<cuttle> hey alexgordon so i had an idea
<cuttle> about a cpu architecture
<cuttle> wanted to know what you think
<cuttle> it's vague and probably awful
<alexgordon> does it involve dave holland?
<cuttle> haha no
<cuttle> so the idea is for like
<cuttle> a
<cuttle> dataflow processor
<cuttle> i don't know how those have been made in the past
<cuttle> something about content-addressable memory
<cuttle> i don't want to do that
<cuttle> i want it to be very asynchronous
<cuttle> so that it scales upwards indefinitely to like
<cuttle> multiple processors communicating
<cuttle> so it's more like
<prophile> paws: now in architecture form
<cuttle> a bunch of processor
<cuttle> rather than
<cuttle> *a* processor
<cuttle> so like a gpu but way more general purpose
<cuttle> so like it'd be hierarchical
<cuttle> like little locales
<cuttle> and each little cell can look at the other cells in its locale
<cuttle> and like compute a result, or be data
<cuttle> so data and functions are exactly the same, just arbitrary directed graphs of cells
<alexgordon> prophile is obviously more awake than I am
<cuttle> but there's no problem with garbage collection of cycles because it is not like a global addressable space
<cuttle> everything is really local
<alexgordon> cuttle: so you're trying to build... a brain?
<cuttle> hahahahaa
<alexgordon> loads of little processors communicating
<joelteon> yeah
<cuttle> it's more similar to a brain than von neumann architectures are, yes
<alexgordon> cool
<alexgordon> I've always thought computers should be more like brains
<cuttle> yeah
<cuttle> definitely
<prophile> bullshit
<alexgordon> brains are more powerful than computers at many tasks
<prophile> brains are unpredictable and buggy
<cuttle> this is way more organized than a brain though, though it'd probalby be really suited to like adaptation and stuff
<cuttle> like
<cuttle> neural network shit
<alexgordon> for the same power budget anyway
<prophile> also they have tentacles
<cuttle> like, it'd probably be easy to implement them on top of it
<alexgordon> can a computer beat a top chess player using the same number of watts as a human brain?
<cuttle> but like this would be able to deterministically lay out a whole thing in
<cuttle> alexgordon++
<purr> Let it be known that cuttle loves alexgordon.
<alexgordon> there should be a competition for that
<alexgordon> apparently it uses around 20W
<cuttle> alexgordon: anyway, this is the architecture corresponding to the idea i was trying to explain earlier
<cuttle> your brain uses like a 3rd of your calories
<alexgordon> prophile: and computers are not?
<cuttle> it seems weird to me that computers and brains use energy at all
<alexgordon> cuttle: I thought the liver used the most power
<cuttle> yknow?
<cuttle> like i mean obviously they do
<cuttle> but like they're just doing stuff with information, not moving big ol heavy things around
<cuttle> haha
<prophile> alexgordon: no, they're generally very predictable and they can't tie themselves in knots in normal operation
<prophile> computers segfault, they don't get depressed
<prophile> or schizophrenic
<alexgordon> prophile: you've obviously not used iTunes
<cuttle> haha
<cuttle> obviously brains and computers are good at different things
<alexgordon> right
<prophile> okay
<prophile> fuck iTunes
<prophile> and everything about it
<cuttle> it's so crazy
<prophile> I tried to rent a movie from iTunes
<cuttle> that we build an ecosystem of a bunch of things running simultaneously
<cuttle> on top of like
<prophile> I don't expect to have to wrestle the fucking thing to play it
<cuttle> one instruction at a time
<cuttle> one part of memory read at a time
<prophile> I'm angry now alexgordon
<prophile> I hope you're proud of yourself
<alexgordon> lol
<purr> lol
<alexgordon> itunes was pissing me off earlier
<alexgordon> took 20 minutes to buy a fucking album
<cuttle> alexgordon: we should talk about this in more detail sometime later
<cuttle> i gtg pretty soon
<cuttle> but i want to flesh it out
<alexgordon> cuttle: yeah maybe later tomorrow
<cuttle> cool

<ELLIOTTCABLE> hi, all
<cuttle> aw you just missed me :p
<cuttle> want to discuss this with you too ELLIOTTCABLE
<cuttle> when i get back
<alexgordon> hi el
<ELLIOTTCABLE> discuss what with me
<alexgordon> ELLIOTTCABLE: cuttle is building a human brain
<alexgordon> from scratch
<ELLIOTTCABLE> wat.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> That feel when you go into #ELLIOTTCABLE, and hear some new batshit for the first time,
<ELLIOTTCABLE> and *don't* discount it, 'cause it's in #ELLIOTTCABLE.
<alexgordon> hahaha
<alexgordon> ELLIOTTCABLE: cuttle has this idea for a processor design which is lots of little interconnected cores
<alexgordon> like a brain
<joelteon> i can do that
<joelteon> just give me a girl and 9 months
* ELLIOTTCABLE pats joelteon
<alexgordon> joelteon: technically wouldn't the girl be doing that?
<joelteon> yeah but i had a hand in it
<alexgordon> joelteon: kinky
<joelteon> is cuttle gonna build this thing himself from scratch
<joelteon> or will he use manufactured parts
<alexgordon> nah it's just a design, cuttle doesn't own a fab (yet)
<ELLIOTTCABLE> (yet)
<ELLIOTTCABLE> why isn't cuttle rich yet
<alexgordon> he will be
<ELLIOTTCABLE> cuttle, go solve getting-rich. it's a problem, you shouldn't have a hard time.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> it's certainly simpler than an optimizing compiler,
<alexgordon> ELLIOTTCABLE: well gay marriage is legal now
<alexgordon> so
<alexgordon> 1. Marry ELLIOTTCABLE
<ELLIOTTCABLE> LOL
<purr> LOL
<ELLIOTTCABLE> gods, no
<alexgordon> if cuttle isn't running a small country in 5 years I'm going to be so disappointed
<ELLIOTTCABLE> riiiiight
<ELLIOTTCABLE> and that country better be in space.
<ELLIOTTCABLE> otherwise I'll definitely be all ‘ಠ_ಠ.’ at him.
<alexgordon> "cuttle, first president of the moon"
<alexgordon> at 23
<joelteon> i'd be hurt you guys don't think i'll be president of the moon
<joelteon> but i'm still gonna be busy trying to fix this provision by then
<alexgordon> joelteon: you might be high, but you're not THAT high
<joelteon> ):
<ELLIOTTCABLE> Please welcome His Excellence Micah Johnston, the Premier of MarsColony!
<joelteon> oh is that who cuttle is
<ELLIOTTCABLE> alexgordon: wat.
<purr> beep.
<alexgordon> LOL joelteon
<purr> LOL
<joelteon> well nobody told me

<cuttle> did what you wanted
<cuttle> now what
<cuttle> ELLIOTTCABLE: also when cut.tl goes through, how will I get to it?
<cuttle> OOH A FOLDER
<cuttle> IN /SRV

<Nuck> WTF micah
<Nuck> cuttle: Why are you cuttle now?
<cuttle> Nuck: because
<cuttle> Nuck: i like cuttlefish
<cuttle> Nuck: and cephalopods in general
<Nuck> I swear, I leave and the people get crazier
<Nuck> WTF
<joelteon> neat
<cuttle> ELLIOTTCABLE: how to redirect cut.tl to cut.tl/e
<joelteon> nginx
<joelteon> location / { return 301 /e }
<cuttle> i don't think i have access to this
<cuttle> i just put things in directories
brry is now known as brr
<joelteon> todd is creepy but
<joelteon> lydia
<joelteon> would smash/10
<cuttle> haha
<cuttle> joelteon: you've seen the finale, right? just wondering
<joelteon> i'm seeing it right now
<cuttle> oh sweet

<cuttle> how's it goin
<cuttle> g
<cuttle> alexgordon: not jazz and all but some very nice bass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plhnSptU9tg
<cuttle> shit
<cuttle> silk road got fucked
<cuttle> tor is compromised
<cuttle> nothing is safe anymore
<cuttle> where will i get my designer drugs
<joelteon> man, it really isn't fun to use super old versions of stuff
<alexgordon> cuttle: tor is a good idea with a stupid implementation
<cuttle> what's the implementation
<cuttle> ?
<cuttle> bbiab lunch
<alexgordon> cuttle: using browsers
<alexgordon> cuttle: with regular html
<cuttle> haha yeah
<cuttle> browers are shite
<alexgordon> they should have used a restricted subset of XHTML
<alexgordon> and specialist browsers
* cuttle nods
<cuttle> bye lunch

<joelteon> ok
<joelteon> ok i am here
cloudhead has joined #elliottcable
<joelteon> i'm the only sysadmin at work for the rest of the week
<fwg> syphon off documents, leave for Hong Kong
<cuttle> haha
<alexgordon> so my new approach for learning languages
<alexgordon> take a book (something well known, harry potter is a good one)
<alexgordon> then take out all the nouns and other content words you can translate easily
<alexgordon> leaving in the function words
<alexgordon> read that
<alexgordon> the content words in english should provide enough context to work out what's happening, but the foreign function words ensure you're thinking in the language
<cuttle> alexgordon: that's a good point
<cuttle> yeah function words are the ones you have to have on a more unconscious level
<alexgordon> cuttle: yeah for sure
<alexgordon> function words ARE language
<alexgordon> since no one person knows ALL content words in any language
<alexgordon> but any fluent speaker must know all function words
<cuttle> yeah
<alexgordon> cuttle: booking my ticket!

<cuttle> joelteon: sweet jazz concert
<joelteon> guys, i want to draw a nice bar graph
<joelteon> what should I use
<alexgordon> joelteon: with what data?
<joelteon> six numbers
<alexgordon> joelteon: photoshop?
<joelteon> nah, that's a lot of work
<joelteon> maybe i'll use d3
<cuttle> mathematica
<joelteon> good idea
<alexgordon> why didn't I think of that
<joelteon> i need mathematica though
<alexgordon> -_-
<alexgordon> joelteon: excel?
<alexgordon> google docs?
<joelteon> google docs!
<joelteon> of course
<joelteon> brilliant
