<projectgus> hi everyone
<projectgus> I'm looking for a cheap mini PC I can turn into a small headless home server, to decomission my VPS
<projectgus> I was going to use a MK802 (Allwinner A10) but I accidentally lifted the TX pad off my first one(!), and then the second I bought had an A10s which doesn't support linux yet
<projectgus> currently trying to choose between a GK802 or an Odroid U2
<projectgus> was wondering
<projectgus> - is the 12.04 Ubuntu "preview image" now stable? I sawe you said ubuntu was locking up at one stage.
<projectgus> - is uboot relatively standard on these? I saw in the instructions you 'dd' uboot to a 1k offset (good good) but then you have to dd the kernel uImage to a 1Mb offset...
<projectgus> is that second part optional? if I compile a uboot with ext2 or FAT support can I just load the kernel from a filesystem partition?
<projectgus> thanks everyone, sorry for epic spamming of channel
<projectgus> FWIW I just need USB and a SD card peripheralwise, no need for wifi, bluetooth or hdmi out
<Juggie> you may be better off asking at the forums
<projectgus> Juggie: thanks. miniand forums?
<Juggie> that or armtv or something
<Juggie> there are a couple that are active
<abrasive> projectgus: yo
<abrasive> i was half wondering if you'd turn up here.
<projectgus> abrasive: I admit it. I have a problem. ;)
<abrasive> me too.
<abrasive> er, i ported uboot so we have our own now
<projectgus> bbl heading out for a while
<abrasive> the kernel's decent too
<abrasive> ciao
<projectgus> abrasive: oh, so the uboot mentioned in jas-hack's posts is a vendor blob, but if I compile your one I can customise it?
<abrasive> correct
<projectgus> sorry, asking questions as leaving! :)
<projectgus> nice
<abrasive> i boot from an MMC partition as standard
<abrasive> we now have more features than vendor too, like USB boot
<abrasive> and HDMI console, and keyboard.
<abrasive> so... more than you could ever need in a tiny bootloader.
<projectgus> wow, nice work
<abrasive> i'm easily distracted.
<projectgus> sounds in a better place than the A10 stuff. All their multiple bootloader stages and .fex files to preinitialise registers and stuff
<abrasive> yuck.
<abrasive> yeah, i have an RK3066 dongle too
<abrasive> which i haven't touched since getting the imx6.
<abrasive> the only thing i'm unhappy about is lack of 3d accel driver source
<abrasive> so there's no support for hardfloat targets until someone leaks the right binaries afaik
<projectgus> yeah but i assume they're no worse than everyone else?
<projectgus> ah
<projectgus> ok, properly leaving now
<projectgus> think I'm sold on gk802 though. now just to decide if I buy from miniand or play aliexpress roulette
<abrasive> ok! seeya
<abrasive> heh
<abrasive> i got mine from DX.

<hste> projectgus: I think this looks like a good deal for a gk802 http://www.cnx-software.com/2013/03/26/zealz-gk802-is-temporarly-available-for-69-99-on-geekbuying/
<projectgus> hste: nice, thanks
<projectgus> there are some on aliexpress for $50ish if you buy two
<projectgus> but that sounds like a very good price for one
<projectgus> and of course there's always the chance with aliexpress you'll get something else inside
<hste> projectgus: normaly those a priced with some rc they spli the price so it looks cheaper
<projectgus> oh snap
<projectgus> yeah you're right
<projectgus> thanks :)

<hste> jas-hacks_: still using usb rootfs?
<jas-hacks_> hste: still testing with it.
<hste> jas-hacks_: do u have ok performance on usb. I feel its a bit slower than on class 10 sdcard, but my usb dongles aren't of the fastest ones
<jas-hacks_> hste: similar to my sdcard (class 6/10)
<jas-hacks_> hste: For now you can only boot from one usb drive, if there are 2 or more it will fail.
<hste> jas-hacks_: do u think u could make it try to boot kernel /boot/uImage if no boot.scr is found?
<jas-hacks_> hste: but from which drive? The internal one?
<hste> jas-hacks_: wouldn't it first look for /boot/uImage on internal then ext and the usb like boot.scr?
cnxsoft has quit [Quit: cnxsoft]
rz2k has quit []
<jas-hacks_> hste: if we look for /boot/uImage then you can't set the resolution
<hste> jas-hacks_: I think only to do it if no boot.scr is found, else use boot.scr
<hste> jas-hacks_: or set a default to 720P and the load kernel if no boot.scr is found
<hste> then we could have a rootfs on int and put a ext sdcard with boot.scr when we want to boot that one instead
<hste> without having to remove boot.scr from int
<hste> but just changing order for boot.scr to ext->int->usb would also work :)
jas-hacks_ has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<abrasive> don't default to 720p, please.
<abrasive> autodetect should e default (and we need to figure out why it doesn't work for some people...)
<hste> abrasive: then its best just to use boot.scr for setting video :)
<abrasive> yes.
<abrasive> :)
<hste> abrasive: do u know if there is a way to allocate fbmem depending of res?
<abrasive> no idea, sorry
<abrasive> at what res do you run into problems?

<hste> abrasive: sth in your defconfig breaks sound, using jas defconfig gives me sound
<abrasive> interesting.
<abrasive> i never tested sound
<hste> I'm preety sure I got better wifi without the antenna wires connected to the dongle :)
<abrasive> nasty.
<abrasive> i hate wifi...
<abrasive> such black magic as far as signal is concerned
<hste> abrasive: maybe it picks up some noice. It's not shielded
<hste> I got a new pc from office:) its so much faster to compile kernels now :)

<hste> hp__ its the kernel that turn down freq on cpu if its getting hot. The other one is to run on full speed even if it gets too hot
<hp__> 58 fps for es2gears :)
<hste> hp__ in xbuntu?
