<holographer> Q: What's the general current situation of IPFS on Android? Is c-ipfs currently the better way to include ipfs support on Android via the NDK?
<holographer> I can't seem to cross-compile go-ipfs appropriately via the usual Go methods
<lgierth> i don't know about the state of c-ipfs really
<lgierth> go-ipfs works nicely, but doesn't optimize for battery etc.

<holographer> Uruguay right now
<cipres> iba a decir "no me digas uruguay"
<cipres> sounds like an amazing country
<cipres> the most modern country of south america i get the impression
<holographer> every place has good and bad things. I like that it's less crazy politically-wise than... well... most of the world right now
<cipres> people using ipfs in uruguay ? :)
<cipres> true
<holographer> hehehe no idea, possibly just me right now
<holographer> I'm thinking of spending part of the year here and going to Holland for work periodically
<holographer> We'll see how it pans out
<holographer> The bad and the good thing about Uruguay is that's a little bit disconnected from the mainstream
<holographer> Almost impervious, I'd say
<holographer> Which is good to do your own thing without interference
<holographer> And bad because there's not much of an advanced tech industry
<cipres> i was gonna ask about that
jesse22 has joined #ipfs
<holographer> Not much of a tech community, save for a few small conferences
<holographer> And some FOSS users groups
<cipres> the weed industry is going strong on the other hand :)
<holographer> Commercial software exports are doing fine however, according to a Harvard report
<holographer> Weed production has met some problems, like a thinly veiled boycott by some big banks
<holographer> But it's being rolled out anyway
<holographer> Only more slowly than anticipated
<cipres> more and more countries are taking the same path
<cipres> it's inevitable
<holographer> I hope so
<holographer> The uruguayan economic boon of the last decade seems to be slowing down
<holographer> But there aren't any signs of society wanting to back down on social progress
<holographer> Save for a few extremists catching the contagion of insane world affairs
<cipres> you were born in another part of south america ?
<holographer> I was born here but lived abroad for a long time
<holographer> Lived in Brazil for a while as well

<cipres> holographer: do they use "olé" in uruguay ? like in spain
<holographer> No, never
<holographer> That expression comes from the old tradition of bullfighting, which was abandoned here maybe a century ago

<holographer> It's mostly the Y that sounds SHHH here, the main difference with spaniard pronunciation
<holographer> Also Z and soft C sound like S here, same as in Barcelona (unlike the rest of Spain)
<cipres> sorry yes the Y
<cipres> that must be the most difficult coming from spain, say the Y like SHHH but that's cool
<holographer> Argies also have the same SH sound
<holographer> It's perfectly mutually intelligible anyway
<holographer> Like between English as spoken in Britain, and English spoken statside
<cipres> right but uruguyans coming to spain don't have problems then with the way spaniards pronunciate the Y ?
<holographer> nah, not at all
<cipres> uruguayans not uruguyans
<holographer> People are very welcoming of the differences, and cultural ties go 500 years back
<cipres> i love yerba mate :)
<cipres> can't drink anything else now
<holographer> Cool, it seems more people are digging it around the world
<cipres> i've tried so many brands but i like the mate from argentina the most
<holographer> I prefer tea, but that's just me, family tradition
<holographer> Uruguayans have told me they find Argie mate disgusting, but I really have o idea
<cipres> oh yeah !?
<cipres> but the mate that they drink in uruguay is it grown in uruguay ?
<cipres> or brazil
<holographer> Something to do with them usig more sticks than the tree leaves
<cipres> yes the argentina mate is usually "con palos", many sticks, i don't mind
<cipres> brazilian mate is very fine-ground usually and tastes quite different
anewuser has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<holographer> Generally from either Paraguay or Brazil yes, it doesn't grow here due to the milder weather
<cipres> oh yeah it only grows in strict latitudes ...

<cipres> yeah they're blessed land-wise many resources
<cipres> so why Holland ? work easy there ?

<MikeFair> So I got a query; assuming for a moment that using a web server to store CID blocks is a good idea; what would be the best way to tell IPFS Daemons about the web CID block caching servers?
<MikeFair> my thinking is that instead of purging the CID blocks from the the local directly, it could upload them to a website
joocain2 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<MikeFair> The website has the same features as a daemon "provides", "peers" (other websites), and "wants" lists; and it can even connect to other websites to hunt for blocks; but it won't allow realtime connections (http requests only), it won't carry pubSub, it might keep track of a routing table; but only very slowly a la cron polls
<MikeFair> It won't reassemble blocks into file

<MikeFair> What works at the moment is https://test.fpent.net/ipfs/CID to download the file
rendar has joined #ipfs
<MikeFair> err not https; http://www.test.fpent.net/ipfs.cgi
<MikeFair> There's a lot of basic shared webhosting site with a lot of unused hard drive space that people are apying for but not utilizing
<MikeFair> I'd like a website to be able to contact a daemon and register itself as a "web peer"
<MikeFair> which means it will only push and pull individual CID blocks
<MikeFair> It makes the "web" the hard drive of IPFS
avelkei has joined #ipfs
<MikeFair> These obviously aren't secure vaults, so whenever a node pulls a CID block from the web server it has to validate the CID belongs to that file
<MikeFair> BUt if (1) The IPFS daemon knew what CID it wanted; (2) requested that CID via HTTP GET; and (3) validated the block it received is in fact the block it asked for by regenerating the CID; then I think that's pretty safe; malicious people can't alter the underlying blocks and get away with it even though the file storage valuts are insecure

<datafatmunger> Hello all...I'm giving IPLD a go, but really struggling to piece together how connecting different trees (ipfs/git/ethereum/etc.) in the forest actually works. I'm primary interested in git at the moment. The most insightful thread I've found thus far is: https://github.com/ipfs/interface-ipfs-core/issues/81
<datafatmunger> which states... "Shortcomming: There is no clear way to pass a git object, or a ethereum block this way, unless we had conversations from and to json for all of them. Solution: Just add the git, ethereum and other IPLD compatible objects using ipfs block put. Important to note: The shortcomming is just a CLI thing, within a language runtime, it will be fine doing dag put of ethereum nodes, since we have the classes for them."
<datafatmunger> thread also states: In go-ipfs you can add raw git blocks via dag put with --input-enc set to raw or zlib, same should be the case for other formats.
<datafatmunger> although here...I'm not sure what a "raw git block" actually is
<datafatmunger> i would assume something like? .git/objects/7d/df25817f57c2090a9568cdb17106a76dad7d04
<datafatmunger> i can of course: $ ipfs block put .git/objects/7d/df25817f57c2090a9568cdb17106a76dad7d04QmbpgFJ2ofk2Cf5pSFGmEkFVZg6Rit7Xx4Qg6f2hT5U2fa
<datafatmunger> i can of course: $ ipfs block put .git/objects/7d/df25817f57c2090a9568cdb17106a76dad7d04
<datafatmunger> QmbpgFJ2ofk2Cf5pSFGmEkFVZg6Rit7Xx4Qg6f2hT5U2fa
<datafatmunger> but then what?

<whyrusleeping> datafatmunger: Magik6k is the one you want to talk to about that

<Magik6k> datafatmunger: you can add git objects to ipfs with `ipfs dag put -f git --input-enc zlib .git/objects/12/3456...`
<datafatmunger> whyrusleeping and magik6k thx for the replies
<Magik6k> This wil let you use `ipfs dag get` with the paths and stuff
<Magik6k> There is an experimental helper to work with git repos on ipfs: https://github.com/magik6k/git-remote-ipld
<datafatmunger> Error: no input parser for "zlib" ... maybe i missed the dependency during install?
mehdib[m] has left #ipfs ["User left"]
<Magik6k> you probably need the git plugin installed, see https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/blob/master/docs/plugins.md
<Magik6k> whyrusleeping: how hard would it be to get the git plugin built on dists for the next release?
colatkinson has joined #ipfs
<whyrusleeping> Magik6k: shouldnt be too difficult to do
mehdib[m] has joined #ipfs
<whyrusleeping> would just need to add it to github.com/ipfs/distributions

<Magik6k> datafatmunger: soulds weird, I assume you installed matching daemon when building the plugin, which distro and go version do you use?
<datafatmunger> Linux ... 4.15.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Feb 25 12:53:23 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

<Magik6k> hmm, let me upgrade my go then
muravey has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<datafatmunger> ...and yeah i just rebuilt the daemon and the plugin for a sanity check...so pretty sure it's all the same code base.

<datafatmunger> seems to fail loading the plugin here: if _, err := loader.LoadPlugins(pluginpath); err != nil
<Magik6k> looks like you tried to load the plugin twice (compiled into the daemon and the one in .ipfs)
<Magik6k> I updated my arch and build without build cache (go build -a [...]) and it worked for me
<Magik6k> *built
<datafatmunger> ah yeah, sorry ... i didn't recomment the plugins file ... it's getting late. :-P
<datafatmunger> Magik6k and it works ... not really sure what string of events lead me here ... but thanks for you help!
