Been a while since I tried running the ipfs daemon, will its memory usage remain steady if I add a few files then leave it alone?
pcardune has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<JCaesar>
steady… maybe. small, no.
<JCaesar>
Make sure to run 0.4.14.
<Johnythesmith>
oh i see why ipfs max storage only shows as 8GB.
<Johnythesmith>
Its repo location is set to /home/pi/.ipfs again instead of /media/zwoTsata/ipfs - i definatly did use export IPFS_PATH=/media/zwoTsata/ipfs, initialised it and it created all the files there...
<Johnythesmith>
mightve added some files to that repo instead of the new one then... Luckily saved all ipfs add commands so i can just run it as a shell to make sure all files i want are added

ipfs contains lots of things that are IMHO unnecessary complexity, but one result of that attitude is that CIDs are pretty robust.

<lord|>
Icefoz: what is unnecessarily complex?
<lord|>
curious
<Icefoz>
eh, now is not a good time for me to discourse
<Icefoz>
but libp2p, CID and the whole multibase/multicodec/ipld/etc thing are quite hairy.

but it seems to work, so.
<tab1293>
hey is it possible to run an ipfs daemon from a chrome extension? I'm looking at js-ipfsd-ctl but it seems like this is dependent on a binary?
<lgierth>
Icefoz: what's hairy in particular? happy to find weak spots
<lgierth>
tab1293: check out github.com/ipfs-shipyard/ipfs-companion - it runs a js-ipfs node within the extension itself
<tab1293>
@lgierth okay but this still requires users to have the ipfs node installed on their system correct? I was curious if its possible to run an ipfs node completely in a browser extension
<Icefoz>
lgierth: Iam mainly non-specifically sour about how hard it is to re implement and how much infrastructure has to be built for the whole stack to work
<Icefoz>
Instead of it being built on existing stuffs.
<Icefoz>
But my opinion on this is mostly from secondary sources, so.
<Icefoz>
I keep wanting to actually use IPFS as a library and it's mostly undoable because it's so complex, and I occasionally peek at the ongoing Rust implementation that Parity is working on and it's slow going.
<Icefoz>
That's all.
<lgierth>
tab1293: what i said is it runs a js-ipfs node right there in the extension itself :)
<Icefoz>
My gut instinct is that using IPFS for, for example, an IoT (as much as I hate the acronym) security camera should be almost as simple as HTTP
<Icefoz>
and it is far far far from that.
<tab1293>
cool okay I'll dig in to it more, thanks
<lgierth>
Icefoz: heh yeah agreed it's all still way to complex and under-documented
<Icefoz>
lgierth: as an outside occasional-observer it feels very pinky-and-the-brain-y
<Icefoz>
But it's also the only damn thing that does something so cool, to be honest.
<Icefoz>
So.
<lgierth>
:):) aww thanks
<lgierth>
the pinky and the brain theme song is something i actually regularly whistle
<tab1293>
all though directly from that repo @lgierth "Note: ipfs-companion is designed to retrieve content from a locally running IPFS daemon. Make sure IPFS is installed on your computer"
<lgierth>
granted, we need to get a lot better and tying all the loose ends together
<Icefoz>
BitTorrent is similar but more limited, DAT is produced for a single very pragmatic use case but could be so much more.
<Icefoz>
so
<Icefoz>
someday I'll have time and energy to help whip ipfs into a lean mean DHT machine
<lgierth>
tab1293: oh mmh that's a bit outdated then. now that you say that i'm not a 100% sure the embedded node functionality has been released yet. it's definitely there if you use firefox dev edition and and the latest beta build of the addon (look for window.ipfs in any website's console)
<lgierth>
tab1293: when in doubt alanshaw_ lidel and olizilla know (they'll be up in ~8h)
<lgierth>
Icefoz: ah yeah lots of interesting DHT things out there -- i'm reading the Coral DSHT paper right now
<Icefoz>
oho that's a new one on me
<lgierth>
it's basically a mix of the "traditional" big-global-ring DHT and hierarchical local rings
chjk6x_ has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<Icefoz>
ah it adds ping distance to it's structure
<Icefoz>
interesting
<lgierth>
from the libp2p perspective it'd be great to have all these little building blocks to build a bigger thing out of it. e.g. have a classic kademlia-ish dht, have a hierarchical dht, have an xyz dht, and then be able to compose them freely
<Icefoz>
well the thing is
<lgierth>
and of course also non-dht routing mechanisms
<lgierth>
then have predefined configs for a lot of common scenarios and use cases
dominic__ has joined #ipfs
<Icefoz>
there is a single *actually* interesting mechanism that everything else can be built out of
<Icefoz>
and that is `retrieve(CID) -> data`
<Icefoz>
from a user perspective everything else can be built out of that and it's fine
<tab1293>
hmm I just downloaded firefox dev edition, no window.ipfs object @lgierth
<Icefoz>
but to be able to implement that you need 10e5 or more LoC of *other stuff*
<lgierth>
tab1293: with ipfs-companion installed and enabled?
