<darkdrgn2k[m]> JCaesar: We have been doing work with "offline networks". Networks that are not connected to the traditional internet. IPFS actaully works really great in completely isolated networks (ipns does not have to worry about hitting nat walls for example)
nowah1 has joined #ipfs
<darkdrgn2k[m]> Hyperborea is a world wide ipv6 mesh network of which internet exit nodes are NOT a default service that exists on each node. that is to say that each node can by connected to Hyperborea AND internet, or JUST hyperborea with no internet access at all.
nowah1 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<darkdrgn2k[m]> we have bootstrapped IPFS to a hyperboria node so that it could find peers in the swarm. Obviously a node connected to only hyperboria could only access nodes also connected to hyperboria.
<darkdrgn2k[m]> those hyperboriea only nodes seem to have a harder time to find content (even though the content was published also on a hyperboria only node)
<JCaesar> hm. that's a bit odd. if the ammount of peers to look on is smaller, i'd expect resolution to be faster. But I'm not a pro at ipfs, I might add…
<JCaesar> (also, I thought I hinted that I know about cjdns by saying "clearnet", but thanks for the explanation. :P)
<darkdrgn2k[m]> yes, just wanted to make sure the picture of what this crazy setup we are using was clear :P
<JCaesar> (and furthermore, I thought it was spelled hyperboria?)
<darkdrgn2k[m]> i would think the same but that does nto seem to be a fact
<JCaesar> Hmm.. there is an ipfs config option "AddrFilters" under Swarm. I wonder what that does…
<darkdrgn2k[m]> you are correct, its an intentional misspelling of hyberborea :)
<JCaesar> oic
<darkdrgn2k[m]> anyway i am working on a demo of several distributed systems for a outreach project we are doing next weekend
<darkdrgn2k[m]> (ps im horrible at spelling and apparently typing!)
<JCaesar> Thats fine. Sometimes, I'm too.
<darkdrgn2k[m]> i would like to demo our IPFS live stream video module, but we have been plagued with ipns speed issues with it, i was hoping that a more closed system would fix the problem.
<JCaesar> Hm. Other than the AddrFilters, what comes to my mind is to really set up a private IPFS group.
<darkdrgn2k[m]> yes i was thinkinga bout that
<JCaesar> You'll have to drop the original bootstrap list on all your nodes and set an password for the group.
<darkdrgn2k[m]> and for the demo i may have to but i would much rather find a way to be able to interact with the rest of the hyperboria network
<JCaesar> Last time I checked, it was an experimental feature.
<JCaesar> hm.
<JCaesar> the docs say to check this issue https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/1226#issuecomment-120494604 for AddrFilters. I don't know whether that's going to help.

<darkdrgn2k[m]> i was talking with some one that has experiance with DHC (i personaly have a vague understaind of it i never read up on it to be honest) and he said that in his experience he found that the second the trees become out of sync things break.
PeterASilva has joined #ipfs
<JCaesar> I thought IPFS was able to tolerate not being able to connect to all peers…
<darkdrgn2k[m]> well i know there is some truth to that because much of the network is behind nats
<darkdrgn2k[m]> (hence our ipns woews)
<JCaesar> hm, the way I see it AddrFilters is a blacklist. So you'll have to invert fc00::/8 and express that as a list of cidr matches… brrr.
<JCaesar> other than that: don't bother with ipns. in my experience, it's too slow to be of use.
<JCaesar> (unless you use the dns based variant, like ipfs.io does. that works just fine.)
<darkdrgn2k[m]> ps: http://node2.e-mesh.net/tv2/ <- thats kinda what we are working on but on a smaller scale
sanderp has joined #ipfs
<darkdrgn2k[m]> >, it's too slow to be of use
<darkdrgn2k[m]> Yes publishing takes >2min on clearnet. Completly closed system its much faster but we have resorted to ipns over pubsub

<r0kk3rz> surely it will do both
<r0kk3rz> put on dht and on pubsub, its just the pubsub will get there faster
<swedneck[m]1> ah, that makes sense
<darkdrgn2k[m]> i time out legacy ipns cuase i dont want to wait 2 mins :P
<darkdrgn2k[m]> hey if i publish a directory of files
<darkdrgn2k[m]> and individual's files's hash is still accessable or is that ?
<darkdrgn2k[m]> like if i have a "hello world.txt" that i add in a directory can that file be accessed by its hash without re-uploading/downoading
plexigras has joined #ipfs
<TUSF> The directory and the file will be two separate blocks. If you add the directory, your node will have both blocks. If you look around some unmaintained IPFS directories, the contents of some folders are missing, because people have the directory cached or pinned, but not its contents.
