<Steverman> is pubsub still floodbased?
<r0kk3rz> i havent seen any news that says otherwise
<Steverman> The problem with flooding is that if everyone is fully connected, then you're bound to receive lots unnecessary information, right?

<r0kk3rz> yeah
<r0kk3rz> im starting to think that we need to use corenet to proxy existing solutions over ipfs
<r0kk3rz> there are loads of pub sub messaging systems out there
<Steverman> I want to give own implementation of some sort a go for my master thesis, but I don't know how easy it is to swap out
<r0kk3rz> get ipfs to solve the p2p connectivity issue, and signalling shouldnt be that hard
lidel has joined #ipfs
Sunflowery has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Steverman> Did some contribs (small) for js version and I'm learning Go right now
Sunflowery has joined #ipfs
<r0kk3rz> the intent for a while would be to swap it out, so im sure the current implementation is with that in mind
<Steverman> My first project with ipfs was p2p live streaming... but it doesn't scale well. Last time I used it was with webrtc because I wanted browser support
<r0kk3rz> someone did that recently for a conference
<Steverman> It was last year :)
<r0kk3rz> this wasnt, this was a few months ago
Sunflowery has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]

<Steverman> Do you have a link?
<Steverman> Someone asked me to show it on some monday talk thing
<r0kk3rz> lgierth might have more information, he was at this conference
<Steverman> Yep, I pretty did that. IPFS+HLS
<r0kk3rz> it seemed to work well enough
<Steverman> At a cost of delays and duplicate chunks
<Steverman> Well, at least for me
<r0kk3rz> no idea on the scale of viewership though
<r0kk3rz> duplicate chunks?
<Steverman> HLS outputs chunks instead of a stream
<Steverman> My problem was when peers sends the same chunk at once to someone requesting it
<r0kk3rz> sounds like a bug in ipfs, that may have been solved already
lanlink has joined #ipfs
<Steverman> And then I had to deal with artificial delay, because only the streamer pretty much has the chunk in the beginning.
<Steverman> Perhaps :)
<r0kk3rz> yes i dont think you'll ever get to live as in real-time on ipfs
<Steverman> Twitch streamers don't have real-time either afiak
<Steverman> afaik*
<Steverman> Depends on what real-time means :P
<Steverman> within a certain threshold of ms?
Mikaela__ has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<r0kk3rz> i guess
<Steverman> But the cool thing is that I could embed the hashes into HLS .m3u8 playlist instead of the actual chunk name. And then give viewers that playlist with some offset to ensure chunk diversity
<Steverman> That eliminates pubsub as well
<Steverman> .m3u8 isn't big so I'm fine with having it on a centralized server

<deni> Swedneck: Thanks :)
<deni> Unfortunately I cannot connect.
<deni> I did `ipfs add -r folderWithFiles/`
<deni> And `ipfs daemon &`
<Swedneck> are you trying to download a file from your own pc?
<deni> I'm trying out webm streaming. The hastes are:
<deni> QmQLzvbbHATu6Xb7oY26CtbFsMqFfAacWpoBufrQQiaYLz
<deni> QmWhrLDfAVA61oSb1kgZWDxbsSN9fbAzREKA8K2Etpp7o7
<deni> QmebgnbhAB7N3doEyg3uxqzHsdPsJ7FANexTFv78tTFium
<deni> Swedneck: Works now. Had to `ipfs add` after `ipfs daemon`
<Swedneck> ah
<deni> Swedneck: All open movies. Enjoy ;)
<Swedneck> btw you should prefix it with ipfs:// in the future
jwindover has joined #ipfs
<deni> Like: ipfs://QmQLzvbbHATu6Xb7oY26CtbFsMqFfAacWpoBufrQQiaYLz
<Swedneck> yeah
<Swedneck> at least for people not on matrix, and using the ipfs-companion, it's clickable
<deni> Swedneck: Can you try playing it through your local gateway and tell me if starts playing instantaneously?
<Swedneck> sadly riot.im uses a linkifyer that overrides ipfs-companion, but at least copy and paste still works
<Swedneck> it does
<Swedneck> although for some reason it has a different hash than the big buck bunney video i added
<Swedneck> i got it from video.blender.org, where did you get it?
<deni> Swedneck: Thanks :) That is so awesome! Just rented three servers across Europe to host them.
<deni> I got it from Wikipedia. Couldn't find webm versions anywhere else.
Spirit5324 has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<Swedneck> hmm
<deni> Swedneck: Also, it plays very nicely through the public gateway, which is insane.
<Swedneck> ah yes, mine seems to be mp4
jwindover has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<Swedneck> maybe make a folder with versions in the common formats?
Tiez has quit [Quit: WeeChat 2.2]
<deni> Swedneck: webm is an important factor in the experiment.
<deni> Also, just got an email from my hosting provider: "We have indications that there was an attack from your server."
<deni> Ahem, no. That was quite intentional :P
<Swedneck> ah yes that
<deni> Swedneck: What do people do about it?
<Swedneck> ipfs init -p server
<Swedneck> actually, you want `ipfs config profile apply`
<Swedneck> so you don't have to re-init
user_51 has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<deni> So `init` first and then `profile apply`?
<Swedneck> no, just `ipfs config profile apply server`
<deni> And then start the server using just `ipfs init`?
<Swedneck> no, `ipfs init` is like `git init`
<Swedneck> to restart the node, kill the ipfs process and run `ipfs daemon` again
joeyh has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<Swedneck> also you may want to use `ipfs daemon --enable-gc`
<Swedneck> which enables garbage collection, basically running `ipfs repo gc` periodically
<deni> But when I did `ipfs init -p server` the process nicely went into the background.
joeyh has joined #ipfs
user_51 has joined #ipfs
<deni> Would `ipfs daemon &` be the right way of doing it?
jhulten has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<Swedneck> oh boy
<deni> boi
<Swedneck> i think you've just messed stuff up, i'd kill the ipfs process and remove the ipfs repo
<Swedneck> then initialize a clean repo with `ipfs init -p server`
jwindover has joined #ipfs
<Swedneck> `ipfs init` is what makes the ipfs repo, i wouldn't be surprised if running it with an existing repo breaks things
<deni> I think I was the one that messed up. Just have to find the command to delete the repo.
<Swedneck> just delete the folder lol
<Swedneck> by deault it's ~/.ipfs
<deni> Just found it :)
joeyh has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds]
<Swedneck> keep in mind you'll have to re-add your content, and if you did anything ipns related you'll have to fix that too
djdv has joined #ipfs
<deni> And then `ipfs daemon --enable-gc &` (with the &)?
<deni> Or in there a better way to keep it in the background?
jwindover has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
joeyh has joined #ipfs
<Swedneck> it only matters when running it manually
<Swedneck> when run via cron or systemd or whatever, the & is not needed
<deni> Swedneck: Cool. Works really well :D
rendar has quit []
<Swedneck> also i just pinned big buck bunny webm and added a subdomain for it: https://bigbuckbunny.swedneck.xyz
<deni> So that contains i DNS TXT entry pointing to the IPFS hash?
<Swedneck> yep
<deni> Cool.
<Swedneck> _dnslink.bigbuckbunny.swedneck.xyz TXT "dnslink=/ipfs/QmWhrLDfAVA61oSb1kgZWDxbsSN9fbAzREKA8K2Etpp7o7"
<Swedneck> bigbuckbunny.swedneck.xyz CNAME gateway.swedneck.xyz
<deni> Swedneck: It's going to be interesting to see illegal streaming move to IPFS.
<Swedneck> only the _dnslink one is needed to use it as an ipns address, the CNAME is for redirection to my gateway, which reads the _dnslink record to find out what to return
<Swedneck> on one hand i'd like that, as it is perfect for piracy and it would help adoption something huge
<Swedneck> on the other hand it would really not be good for ipfs to be associated with piracy
<deni> Swedneck: Just be aware that it doesn't return the right mime-type and therefore doesn't play directly in the browser.
<Swedneck> ?
<Swedneck> ah crap yes, lemme fix that
<Swedneck> i hate how you can't just put a file directly in the domain and have it work, it has to have a proper URL
<asymptotically> >chemical/x-xyz
<asymptotically> never seen that before :o
<deni> Really? Are you sure you cannot set the right mime-type by configuring the server.
<deni> * ?
<Swedneck> not sure, besides i don't want to configure things specially for my gateway, i just want everything to be portable
<deni> Ok
<Swedneck> if i'm gonna configure things, i might as well just host it on a normal webserver
