<Swedneck> ah shit sorry
<Swedneck> i tend to just forget conversations like that..
<Swedneck> i'm trying to mirror the fdroid repo: https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/issues/73
<Swedneck> it's on the same HDD as the datastore
<Swedneck> (the server only has one disk)

<postables[m]> no worries. i'll try this tonight. Ah okay I would hazard a guess that the environment probably isn't optimal for IPFS usage, I would suspect that if you tried the add with the file on a different disk you would experience better performance
<postables[m]> if possible i would try that
<postables[m]> honestly, even with a direct ethernet cable connection from your laptop/desktop -> server would probably be better
<postables[m]> *edit:* ~~honestly, even with a direct ethernet cable connection from your laptop/desktop -> server would probably be better~~ -> honestly, even with a direct ethernet cable connection from your laptop/desktop -> server would probably be better and faster than doing it off the same disk
<Swedneck> i just don't wanna spend 60 bucks on a disk for the server
<Swedneck> if cheap 64GB disks existed i'd get that
<Swedneck> 120GB ssds are kinda cheap so i'll get one of those

<postables[m]> I mean you don't necessarily need to get a new drive you can always upload from a separate computer which would probably save you the cost of a new drive.
<postables[m]> Partitioning your drive, and dedicating a single partition to the IPFS data store could help as well. Can't remember the exact reasoning why but partitioning HDDs and devoting certain partitions to a specific task can give a small boost in performance
<postables[m]> If your server virtualized? If not you should be able to figure out the RPM via `hdparm -Ii`
<postables[m]> If it's old enough it could be 5200rpm which is significantly slower than 7200rpm and might be what's causing your issue
<Swedneck> 7200 rpm

<postables[m]> Do you experience disk based slowness in general using this HDD? Usually slow disk when using HDD is a good sign of an aging drive.
<postables[m]> Do you get this problem with all files even large ones or is it just the fdroid archive?
<Swedneck> not sure, maybe?
<Swedneck> i notice my matrix server is kinda slow sometimes
<Swedneck> i haven't really added anything else large on the server
<postables[m]> Could very well be the HDD I would do some more tests with various file sizes and monitoring iostat to see if anything changes
<postables[m]> Probably also wouldn't hurt to try tests with IPFS and without (ie, wget, rsync, etc...)
<Swedneck> maybe i'll get a new 1TB HDD
<Swedneck> that way i get double the storage and i can see if it's really the disk
<postables[m]> You can find some dirt cheap second hand servers on Amazon, Craigslist, etc.. I bought an 8 core hyper-threaded xeon server with 8gb of RAM, and 2TB of storage for $175 off Craigslist two years ago and use it for my home media server and shit
<Swedneck> eeh i already have a server
nich0s has joined #ipfs
<postables[m]> That is true, I would do some more testing though so you can make sure you upgrade the right part
<Swedneck> i'll sleep on it for now

<Kolonka[m]> Also seba-, trying to ban hashes won't work, and anyone with a remote level of popularity trying to 'set up their own server' to avoid censorship probably won't work either, unless they are prepared to spend a BIG chunk of money on it

<Swedneck> actually, how resistant is IPFS actually to censorship?
<Swedneck> i've heard of ISPs just straight up blocking torrents somehow
<seba--> Kolonka[m] why not
<seba--> i mean
<seba--> a super silly retarded way
<seba--> would be a bot running by gov/coorp/lawyers
<seba--> checking who provides a certain hash
<seba--> and suing the hell out of them/notifying the ISP/sending police to them
<seba--> whatever
<seba--> it's non technical
<seba--> but it works
<seba--> :)
<seba--> a more technical approach would be DPI and checking /multistream/1.0.0 and banning the hell out of that
<seba--> or just banning port 4001
<seba--> also attacking bootstrap would work
<seba--> or having requirmenets via regulation of gateways have to ban certian hashes
<seba--> i admit that censoring just few hashes is hard yes
<seba--> because it's all encrypted
<seba--> but you can do that by forcing the network to be more centralised
<seba--> you can do that already with not opening ports or not having your own IP
<uncle_ben> That's a losing strategy of whack-a-mole. A dedicated group of adversaries could simply alter the "offending" content and create a new hash
<seba--> then setting nodes of your own
<seba--> yeah or that
<seba--> that happened on eMule
<seba--> coorporations started sending around corrupted data
spinza has joined #ipfs
<uncle_ben> On an unrelated topic, why does my peer count fluctuate wildly from 1100 to only 130, even when I'm not doing anything or accessing data? How does the network decide when to increase my connections with other nodes?

<Kolonka[m]> Even if something like a nation-wide mass blocking of an entire port address actually ever happened and didn't cause some serious level of protest or instability, one could still simply swap ports
<Kolonka[m]> It wouldn't really be blocking an address at that point anyway, it would be an attempt to shut down the protocol entirely
<Kolonka[m]> Bootstrap nodes can be changed with minimal effort, and hoping that gateways will abide involves total legislative or enforcement harmony
<Kolonka[m]> Since one could just set up a node inside or outside the agreeing countries, again, with little effort
<seba--> hm
<seba--> i guess blocking individual hashes is hard, you're right
<seba--> they could just harass users
<seba--> that's about it
<Kolonka[m]> Yeah, the consensus of the thread I linked earlier is that it is entirely infeasible
uncle_ben has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Kolonka[m]> And @swedneck, that's likely through port addresses, or people using non-TLS trackers
<Kolonka[m]> Still, I don't see ISPs being around forever
<yangm97> is any package manager (such as apt) using ipfs as the transport layer?
