You use one of the OS’s existing mechanism to do so. The app itself doesn’t handle that. But I found in the docs instructions for Linux and MacOS that we’re easy to follow.

ah, ok
<humbleElitist_Di>
oh, wait, I was unclear,
<humbleElitist_Di>
I think I can get it to start on startup (just put a script in the startup folder or whatever),
<humbleElitist_Di>
my question is whether I can make sure that it doesn't use so much resources compared to my "not actually actively using it" that I'll feel like I ought to turn it off

Hi, it is unclear to me how does IPFS (with Kademlia DSHT) resolving hashes. I read IPFS whitepaper, Kademlia whitepaper, and some articles about routing in IPFS, but as I said, it is still unclear to me. What exactly happens when I upload file to IPFS? Does the node with nearest XOR distance get annoucement about that I uploaded file? And when somebody want this file, will they ask the nearest node first, and than he
<ZipperSKDiscord[>
point at me?
<ZipperSKDiscord[>
Or are my uploaded files hashes automatically generated that way, that I am the nearest node for them?

<PhoenixDiscord[m>
the first thing you said, the nearest nodes keep track of why has files that hash similar to their self key, is my understanding, tho i'm not 100% sure
<PhoenixDiscord[m>
IPFS cannot intentionally make the CID of the file you add hash similarly to your key, it's computationally too difficult to be feasible, and it would also mean if two people add files with exactly the same data inside, they would seem like different files when they're actually the same, which would mess with all sorts of elements of IPFS design

Hello there, I'm planing to package for one linux distro a IPFS implementation, and try to use IPFS for a project. Is someone there working with the C implementation ? Or can someone explain me how to build the Go version without internet connexion ? (One requirement, building offline.)

Jybz check out the project ZeroNet that is like ipfs but it works offline and is based on Namecoin blockchain project. Also you might want to look at (ETH) coin network where you can buy .ETH domants on the blockchain unlike www.websitename.com or .org for surfes net compadibly layer.
<swedneck>
neither zeronet not ipfs are very useful without some form of network connection..
<swedneck>
i'm sorry but this just sounds like misinformation

<brian[m]>
in any case, jybz is asking how to build it without an internet connection, not how to use it without one
<brian[m]>
has anyone gotten a public ipfs node working behind a NAT? I'm having a lot of problems =/
<brian[m]>
i've definitely forwarded 4001 on my router
<the_master[m]>
swedneck:permaweb.io Zeronet does what you need. So you could go read up on how they did it and fork it to work with Ipfs. Offline zeronet video ' ZeroNet: Running P2P sites without Internet
<brian[m]>
so outside connections can definitely hit the node, it just rejects them because.... reasons?

so i'm guessing what's happening is that ipfs is only accepting connections with one of those as the destination ip? but that doesn't really make sense...

* ~so i'm guessing what's happening is that ipfs is only accepting connections with one of those as the destination ip? but that doesn't really make sense...~
<brian[m]>
that definitely doesn't make sense. the router is hitting `192.168.1.9:4001` once it translates the request
<brian[m]>
i figured it out: I had applied the `server` profile to my config, which includes `/ip4/192.168.0.0/ipcidr/16` in the `Swarm.AddrFilters` config setting
<brian[m]>
that seems kind of like a bug, the description of the config says:
<brian[m]>
but I guess it also doesn't accept connections from them
<brian[m]>

Jybz: your welcome. Sorry that Im not the best at explaining my ideas in text format. Domain registry to port forward redirect your ipfs address hash from example 1: kVYEGpSpqzsNvq6FkPkHB3NHYh4CaHfYhMOn5/6Nul8 == port forward to something like: www.yourwebsite.eth what is a .eth?
<the_master[m]>
ENS operates in a distributed fashion for both its infrastructure and governance. Anyone can register a .eth domain name for themselves by participating in an auction process, mediated by the blockchain. Link: https://ens.domains
