<markg85> 2nd attempt :) I'm trying to make a site like google keep in a fully distributed manner. I want to store notes that only i can see. What's the most sane way to do that in pure IPFS? Note that i need to be able to see the notes from any device that's mine (this implies a user authentication system) but i don't want full blown authentication as that very certaily requires a database.
<markg85> An approach i can think of is the PGP way where you allow "multiple recipients" access... Just thinking out loud..

<aschmahmann[m]> markg85: You need two components to do what I think you're trying to accomplish. One is encryption since your data is publicly accessible once added to IPFS (e.g. because it's just you viewing the data it can be some shared symmetric key). The second is some mutability system. IPNS is a single-writer system for mutability, which means that while using it across a few of your devices is possible it can be a little risky
<aschmahmann[m]> (e.g. if you send updates from multiple devices around the same time you may lose one of the updates).
<aschmahmann[m]> There are a number of ways to create a multi-writer system that I'd be happy to point you at (I was working on one for IPNS that I unfortunately haven't had time to work on due to other priorities kicking in). However, if you just want to grab something and get moving Textile's Threads are a pretty good place to start.

<graylan[m]> markg85 I'd use steem blockchain and IPFS for files.... any text data can go into steem blockchain and be pulle down via API
<graylan[m]> You can never remove the text though. So it has to be either public text
<graylan[m]> to pull the data down you need no auth, but to push data in you need the private key

<MrAureliusR> that was a bit spammy
<MrAureliusR> lol
<swedneck> problem with js-ipfs is that it's tainted by original sin, due to js :P
<graylan[m]> MrAureliusR so mute me then
<graylan[m]> you didn't tell him how to fix JS-IPFS :D

<markg85> aschmahmann[m]: Sorry for the late response. Regarding encryption, is there an easy wrapper library for that out there for browser purposes? I know about SubtleCrypto but it's quite low level and a pain to use.
<markg85> Hmm, gotta read up on textile and their threads concept. Does that mechanism keep me completely decentralised?
<markg85> The thing i'm afraid of when using another service is that the very point in code where i'd use the other service would probably be a web call. That would be a single connection and not distributed anymore.
<markg85> graylan[m]: Thank you as well :) hmm, i don't know that chain. Lots of reading to do i suppose, hehe. I do know the NKN blockchain but it allows only very minor data packages (100 bytes i think)
<markg85> For both. Would a concept work where i'd use a "index" file (just a json blob with a lod of <cid> entries) that i would encrypt with my key. Then based on that index i fetch the content from IPFS. All content would be encrypted.
<markg85> This might make it possible to create a sort of "mutable" data structure as the IPNS backed index file would always point to the latest index. And the content in that file would always point to the latest <cid> entries
<markg85> But then again, perhaps "steem" is perfect for my little project. Gotta watch some videos about it
<aschmahmann[m]> markg85: sorry not a ton of familiarity with JS encryption libraries.
<aschmahmann[m]> I'd do a bit of reading on your own to see if it makes sense to you though.
<aschmahmann[m]> I'm not familiar with all the details of how Textile threads work, but IIUC there is some centralization around their Cafe nodes. Basically if you want to send a message, but the other nodes are offline you store it at one of their centralized nodes. However, my understanding is that it should work fine even disconnected from their infrastructure, as long as your other nodes are online.
uniquerockrz has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<markg85> aschmahmann[m]: will do, thanks for the pointers :)
<markg85> On a related note. Why do the ipfs folks in their meeting often use non-free markdown editors? Isn't that something that would be a perfect usecase for IPFS if working properly on there?

<aschmahmann[m]> markg85: I don't think anyone's too tied to any particular editor, did you have any suggestions? I think it'd be great to use PeerPad or some other distributed markdown editor, but unfortunately the main PeerPad maintainer has been needed to help with higher IPFS priorities.
<aschmahmann[m]> If you're interested in helping out or building one I'm sure the community would be interested in checking it out
<markg85> aschmahmann[m]: I don't have any suggestions (besides peerpad) but i just thought it would be a really neat case of believing in your own tech when meeting notes would be created and saved using the very tech you folks make :)
<markg85> Well.. I do want to make something like it... yes.. But i'm merely learning new stuff about it. I have a job as a full time developer so you might imagine doing more development when not working is... quite low on my interest list :P
<aschmahmann[m]> makes sense, finding the time is frequently the difficult part 😛. Sometimes it's hard to justify the time to work on the application layer when there's so much to do at the protocol + library layer
<aschmahmann[m]> contributors always much appreciated 🙂

<k0mpjut0r> Hello folks, I tried to adapt one package manager to store data on IPFS, and to provide fulltext search capability I just created a sqlite3 database with all the metadata and stored it as verbatim along with all the packages. That leaves me wondering - is there a "better way" to integrate with sqlite? Right now I have to "fetch" the package database locally and then query it using the regular tooling.
