What Zoom meeting?
<McSinyx[m]>
Discordian, what do you mean by no (tbf i'm not exactly sure what blockchain is, so eli5 would be appreciated)
<Discordian[m]>
IPFS just isn't a blockchain. Uhh to perhaps oversimply everything, a blockchain could be a setup where you have blocks of data, and each block refers to the previous. This can be used to create an immutable chain of data, where each block references the previous. IPFS simply doesn't do that.

Think like Bitcoin's immutable ledger, each block refers to the previous, verified by the miners.

Mind you, IPFS seems to be popular for use in conjunction with blockchain technologies, but it in itself, isn't a blockchain technology.

If I upload a file to ipfs lite
<Myon[m]>
Is it forever saved on ipfs network or just on my device?

<Discordian[m]>
With IPFS when you add a file to any node, it'll persist on that node until removed. Removal happens when the file isn't pinned, and doesn't exist on MFS, and then garbage collection occurs. I'm not sure about the exact way ipfs lite functions, but as a general rule, it'll only exist on your device unless another node pins the file.
<Myon[m]>
How can another node pin the file?

<Discordian[m]>
If you share the CID with another user, they have the option to pin the file on their node. Then both your node, and the user who pinned the content will posses nodes that are serving that content. So let's say person C gets the CID, they could receive the data from either node that has the content.
<Discordian[m]>
And this resolution would happen automatically, only the CID needs to be shared.

So pinning basically means other person get that content on their pc too~
<Myon[m]>
If I understand it correctly
<Discordian[m]>
Yeah, their node will download the related data, store it, and advertise it has it, so other nodes can get the data too.
<Myon[m]>
I understand. Thanks it cleared up a lot. I thought it gets magically shared between all participants in the network.
<Myon[m]>
But ofc it would be a lot of data, so it's logical.
<Discordian[m]>
Yeah I think that's a common misconception, I found IPFS to be kind of mind-blowing too when I first dove in, and also wondered where all the data gets stored. Glad I could help 🙂
