It's off-topic but FWIW, you do need elevated rights to install software on Windows. And on Linux you don't typically need to manually edit sources these days.

<McSinyx[m]>
if two IPFS nodes are in the same LAN, do they automatically tries to connect to each other?
<McSinyx[m]>
and more generally, how does an IPFS node choose the nodes to connect to?
<Discordian[m]>
If two IPFS nodes are on the same LAN, by default they'll attempt mDNS discovery. Some bootstrapping is also done with some default nodes. So when your node first starts up, with default settings and profile, it'll look on mDNS for local nodes, and try to connect to them. It'll also bootstrap off of some default nodes, and try to get lists of other nodes from them too, assisting in peer discovery.

<paranoid[m]>
`ipfs dht findprovs` is the fastest way to lookup whatever a CID exists, or are there better options? any kind of batch operator?
<Discordian[m]>
If you're trying to find the peers that serve a CID, that's the only way I know of. A batch operation sounds useful though.
<RomeSilvanus[m]>
Also your gh rm is outdated, still using json

<paranoid[m]>
technically i only want to know whatever a CID exists, is or was known at some point in time. Could i passively collect CID's, from DHT queries that reach my node? Is that info somewhere/logged?
<Discordian[m]>
<RomeSilvanus[m] "Also your gh rm is outdated, sti"> If you mean the Dirs param, that still works with JSON.
<Discordian[m]>
<paranoid[m] "technically i only want to know "> I've heard about doing such a thing, and thought about it, but I'm honestly not sure how you'd go about accomplishing it.
<Discordian[m]>
The param is `<key>...`I wonder if you can already pass a batch.
