Hi! I just found IPFS and turned to try the examples at https://js.ipfs.io/ and I'm sad to say that nothing seems to work. Is this expected because of it being in alpha, or did I miss something?

I find the use of multihashes and CIDv1 very confusing. What hashes are supported by the network? Do peers advertise dozens of different hashes for each file?

<dreamdust[m]>
The docs say content is addressable by CIDv1, but doesn't say which hashes are supported by the network.
<dreamdust[m]>
If I have a file, how do I know which hash to encode, so that I can be sure to actually find it on IPFS?

I'm writing a piece of software, and I want to generate an IPFS hash for the file. How the hell do I know which hash algorithm to use? The docs say CIDv1 accepts a multihash, but that doesn't say anything about which hashes are supported by the network.
<stebalien>
But if you're trying to address an IPFS node, you might want to use dnsaddr:
<stebalien>
1. Create a dnsaddr TXT record on `_dnsaddr.some-machine.` pointing to your node's multiaddr (including the peer ID).
<stebalien>
2. Address the machine as `/dnsaddr/some-machine/p2p/QmMyPeerID`.
<CSDUMMI[m]>
No, I don't want to address an IPFS Node, I want to access an IPFS API on another Docker Container within Docker-Compose. So, that should work for me.

hello, I am trying to publish/resolve IPNS names in js-ipfs, but it does not seem to work. When I publish something, it is only resolvable within the same browser, but not from outside. Trying to resolve names from the outside does not work either ("Error: record requested for k5... was not found in the network")
<nitz>
is there anything I can do to fix it? Seems that lots of people on discuss.ipfs.io and github have this problem
