Hey, question: My router is dual band and my rpi4 defaults to the 2.4ghz network, ignores the 5ghz. Speeds are real slow, i had to seperate the networks into two and connect to the 5ghz. Is there a setting I can adjust so that it prefers 5ghz?

stasi nope
<chewitt>
the fix is making your WiFi advertise a stronger 5GHz signal than 2.4GHz signal, then 5GHz will be preferred

Because 2.4ghz favors distance over speed. Darn, thanks for your help. I knew it had something to do with the router. Although it's terrific, the firmware is a piece of junk and there's no cfw for it yet. Linksys is good at a lot of things, but software is not one of them.

<de-facto>
btw if you really want to improve speeds id try an usb wifi adapter, those with sma for antenna, it can make a big difference esp for long distance
<de-facto>
im currently experimenting with some 2.4GHz on Ralink RT3070 or also 5GHz on Mediatek MT7612u
<de-facto>
the tiny on-pcb antenna of an RaspberryPi just cant compete with a proper full length Wifi antenna, simply because of physics
<de-facto>
maybe you can do some speedtests with iperf3 and different antenna setups
<de-facto>
you can even focus the EM energy by putting some metal bars | in the correct spacing like "I | [] | |" parallel to the antenna [] pointing into the correct direction (towards the router)
<de-facto>
there are lots of howtos about that in the internet, basically spacing is very important (i think it was half of wavelength or such)
<Strykar>
stasi: create a separate SSID on the 5Ghz AP, and do not configure the RPi to access the 2.4Ghz AP. Getting into band steering is finicky and not vendor agnostic

stasi: and de-facto is spot on, a USB wifi adapter with an external omnidirectional antenna will wtfpwn any planar inverted F antennas (PIFA) like on the RPi. For wifi performance, the factors that makde the greatest difference are Antenna > radio receiver sensitivity > else

I tried using another router (an archer c7 v5) to bridge the rpi4, but I could not get my upnp shares to read. My setup is an archer c7 v2 to the router in question, the linksys mr9000.
<stasi>
What i did was put the c7 v5 in the other room and used the ethernet port to connect the wireless to the linksys (that's where my shares are). It connected fine and internet works great, but I could not get my upnp drives to detect on the rpi in the other room.

<Strykar> I had to do that, the 5ghz has a seperate ssid. Speeds went from 5mbit up to ~75mbit. I assume there's a hardware issue on the rpi because my other devices are maxing out at 200mbit, from the same room.

I'd like to know how to fix the c7 v5 so it can read the upnp shares on my linksys router..But i dont know where the problem is. Is it libreelec, openwrt, linksys?
