tkaiser: can you explain to me why (at least on legacy) the gadget drivers can't attach when otg_mode is != 0?
<KotCzarny>
it's not a tablet, power usage isnt that crucial
<corecode>
yea i disabled it
<tkaiser>
corecode: Since you have to change the role to OTG first? With those fex settings for legacy kernel the role of the OTG port has to be defined. You could use it as host port too.
<corecode>
so 2 is device, 0 is otg?
<corecode>
i'm sorry, i didn't find docs what the otg_mode settings mean
<corecode>
yea i found that, but it doesn't say what the numbers actually mean
<tkaiser>
KotCzarny: slightly off-topic. I ordered an ASM1061 SATA controller (mPCIe for Clearfog Pro) and will post some performance numbers next week to Armbian forum.
<KotCzarny>
there are two preset modes and third is auto-detect
<corecode>
i guess i need to read the source
<KotCzarny>
preset modes are host and device
<corecode>
too bad that all source code search engines died
<KotCzarny>
tkaiser: my adapter should arrive this/next week
<KotCzarny>
its nice if one wants one more host usb port
<KotCzarny>
:)
<KotCzarny>
this is especially true on a20 boards
<corecode>
i guess, but this thing is stuck under the heated bed of my 3d printer, and the only connection it uses is UART3 from the header and wifi. and occasional g_serial for when things go pear shaped
<corecode>
that's why i'd love it to be a console as early as possible

since sid values for particular dont change, maybe there would be a nice feature to supplement uboot with sid--model map in file prepared by user/installer that will allow for single image working on plenty of boxes
<zxchris>
Is it possible to maintain the framebuffer from u-boot through to booting sunxi kernel 3.4.103? I'd like a continuous splash screen. I expect there will be some kernel hacking?

maybe you can hack display driver to clone contents?
leviathanch has joined #linux-sunxi
<zxchris>
I was thinking the same. However, the screen (HDMI) blanks straight after the kernel starts to boot.. I wonder if I also have to attack the HDMI driver?
<KotCzarny>
or just fade to black just before starting kernel?
<zxchris>
I've just spotted fb_draw_colorbar(..) in drivers/video/sunxi/disp/dev_fb.c. So I'll enable that and see when it kicks in.
<zxchris>
I could fade to black, but it would only be shown for 3 seconds at most, then 6 seconds of black while the kernel boots.

<zxchris>
It's all about the "customer" experience ;-)
<zxchris>
Right now, I haven't quite figured out where u-boot is creating the FB to clone from...
<KotCzarny>
you can show kernel splash differing a bit
mzki has joined #linux-sunxi
<zxchris>
That could be okay. There is no reason why u-boot and kernel splash screens can't be identical, I need to minimise the black between them.

@KotCzarny I loose the HDMI signal (or its becomes a silly resolution that my TV can't support) as the kernel starts booting.
<KotCzarny>
something similar happens on my setup
ErwinH has joined #linux-sunxi

It might be some clocks being initialised (though, that should have been the job of u-boot's SPL)
leviathanch has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]

migrate to mainline if you can
<zxchris>
I'm using eMMC, so that might be an option. Though I need audio (over HDMI and headphones) - is that working in mainline?
<zxchris>
Working with NAND on the A20 is a PITA!
<KotCzarny>
uh. then you cant
leviathanch has joined #linux-sunxi
<zxchris>
Android boots with a continuous splash-screen on the A20, doesn't it?
<KotCzarny>
nope
ErwinH has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds]
<KotCzarny>
it changes 2 or 3 times
<zxchris>
Ah. Really? I was told a porky by someone.... hehe.
<KotCzarny>
though i've nuked legacy uboot already, so dont really remember
<KotCzarny>
i may dig up original image though if you want
<zxchris>
Well, I'm starting to think that perhaps making the transition from splash-screen to black as clean as possible might be my safest option.
<KotCzarny>
you can display somthing simple. little logo + 'Booting..' on black screen
<zxchris>
From what I can see in the src, a continuous splash-screen doesn't look possible, so I doubt Android did too.
<zxchris>
It is six or so seconds after the kernel starts booting before I get the TV/monitor to recognise the signal again.
<zxchris>
so during that time, of couse, it is blank.
<zxchris>
(well, in my case BLUE, with an "unsupported" message in the middle :-( )
<zxchris>
How early do you think I could get something simple?
<zxchris>
I mean, how early in the boot process?
<KotCzarny>
you know those little penguins showing up?
<KotCzarny>
;)
<zxchris>
Yeah... that's what I see after six seconds.
<zxchris>
At which point the boot sequence is almost complete and I can just launch my app.
<KotCzarny>
find out what its doing during those 6s, move that to modules?
<KotCzarny>
you can move splash code to initramfs
<KotCzarny>
or even further if you hack hdmi/fb code?
<zxchris>
Ah, okay. So you're saying effectively move the HDMI init to earlier in the boot process?
<zxchris>
At the moment I've compiled HDMI and FB into the kernel instead of a module.
<KotCzarny>
nah, i meant to move things that happen to prolong the initialization, ie. usb into modules and similar
<zxchris>
Yes, sorry - wires crossed.
<zxchris>
That's certainly worth investigating.
<zxchris>
I was considering hacking my own logo (splash screen) into the kernel instead of the penguin.
<zxchris>
Can you control the display resolution from boot args? I've seen disp.screen0_output_mode=EDID:1280x1024p60 documented, but not used it yet.
<KotCzarny>
if you remove EDID: part
leviathanch has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<KotCzarny>
as it autodetects resolution
<zxchris>
Right. Yes.
<zxchris>
That way I can keep the resolution consistent.
<KotCzarny>
but for 1280x1024 you have to hack the code i think
<KotCzarny>
because legacy kernel only has standard tv resolutions
KB3VGW has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<zxchris>
Yeah, I've seen that. u-boot lets me set 640x480, but that doesn't seem possible in 3.4

I'll move things into modules and see how it looks then, as well as setting the boot args.
