<embed-3d> montjoie: pleas: I built up my costom power switch out of a relais pcb with 8 relais and and arduino uno. Its cheaper and less time consuming than doing an own schematic
<BenG83> I need to automate my board farm...
<BenG83> I made a PCB with a STM32F4 for my Pine cluster board that can control reset and AXP power button and includes a UART multiplexer for the consoles, but the rest of my boards is a huge mess atm :p
<Jagan> Hi, any one tested Mali a64? any ref?
<t3st3r> BenG83> wow, that's quite a fun :D
<buZz> ooo do discord too :D
<buZz> oops
<t3st3r> Which signals of AXP do you toggle? Do you use some custom board where signals are on some pins/pads or so?
<t3st3r> Do you just press pwr buttons by STM32 GPIO?
Ultrasauce has joined #linux-sunxi
chomwitt has joined #linux-sunxi
<BenG83> t3st3r, yes I am making my own PCB
<BenG83> AXP signals are on headers for Pine/SOPine/Clusterboard
<BenG83> just using GPIOs to control them
<BenG83> Jagan, I think anarsoul has, but he is working mostly on lima
<t3st3r> BenG83> do you make your allwinner PCBs? Or just STM32?
<t3st3r> Seems just STM32 ... hmm funny :)
<BenG83> STM32
<BenG83> making a power controller for my clusterboard
<BenG83> or other SBCs in my farm
<BenG83> http://i.imgur.com/flDpZHH.jpg kind of like malfuncntioning_fk did for his Pine64 cluster
<t3st3r> Somehow I've got similar idea :) though F4 looks a bit like overkill for something like "watchdog" and "reboot device", no?
<BenG83> well it has ethernet and I use them a lot at work too
<t3st3r> overall its like "management engine" controlling several boards, unless I'm nut
<BenG83> so I just pulled together a schematic from old projects I did
<t3st3r> hmm, crazy idea could be attaching one of uarts to "management" SBC :) but I guess its less reliable...
<BenG83> Arudino type AVR boards would work fine too
<BenG83> but my Rockchip boards have 1.5Mbit UARTs
<t3st3r> I'm fiddling with F103 board atm :)
<BenG83> so I need some fast UARTs on the management board
<t3st3r> so arduino... well, for somebody else :)
<BenG83> I did not find an easy solution to have 8 or 16 UARTs
<BenG83> so I multiplexed them
<t3st3r> Something like open-drain-like approach?
<BenG83> I used analog multiplexers in the end
<BenG83> started with CMOS gates
<BenG83> analog multipexers are easier and more compact because bidirectional
<t3st3r> hmm I think I'm getting your idea
<BenG83> the SMT32F4 emulates a serial port of the network
<BenG83> so it's like a local serial port
<BenG83> *over
Jagan has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<t3st3r> quite a funstuff installation on photo, looks nice :D
<t3st3r> I can imagine turning it into "watchdog" could be not so bad idea as well. Watchdog which can toggle power is nearly most radical thing one can get and it would solve most issues.
<BenG83> the heartbeat LED pin is also on the headers
<BenG83> so you can read that back on the MCU
<BenG83> to see if the board is still alive
<t3st3r> though at least some sunxis have fairly good HW watchdog, tested that eventually :)
<BenG83> I havent used the sunxi wd yet
<t3st3r> well, I've had kernel lockups and sunxi WD kicked that out of deadlock
<t3st3r> that was on A20 board if I remember. Or was it A10 one?
<BenG83> how is the interface for the wd driver?
<BenG83> through sysfs?
<KotCzarny> hmm, why did you use ferrite on eth cable?
<montjoie> embed-3d: I do the same (8 board relay controlled by arduino nano)
<BenG83> any cable connected to the cluster radiates some rf energy
<BenG83> the cluster is used in a SDR for ham radio stuff
<BenG83> hence all the RF blocking
<t3st3r> Not sure, i guess usual Linux inteface and I guess systemd toggled it until thing has locked up. Linux also offers "soft" WD in kernel.
<KotCzarny> i've thought eth was mitigating it by design
<KotCzarny> ahm, ham
<BenG83> yes but you get other stuff on any cables
<KotCzarny> for a moment it looked like a paranoid
<t3st3r> but that one died on hard kernel lockup.
<BenG83> there is so much different RF energy on a SBC board or cluster that you need to block any cables that go in or out
<montjoie> BenG83: nice, I believe to see some DC 12->5V like mine
<BenG83> also if the ethernet cable goes somewhere like a RF transmitter
<BenG83> you get RF back from the ham radio equipment
<BenG83> which most consumer electronics cant handle
<BenG83> so it blocks incoming RF as well
<t3st3r> hmm you have powerful transmitter?
<BenG83> e.g. if you have 1 kW power amplifier
<BenG83> there is RF everywhere :P
<t3st3r> wow oO
<KotCzarny> 1kW is a lot
<t3st3r> its hell a lot :O
<t3st3r> its virtually like opening working microwave cooker
<KotCzarny> :)
<BenG83> HF frequency usually don't cause that much issues
<t3st3r> that typically does about 700-1000W @ 2.4GHz :)
<BenG83> but if you do vhf/uhf stuff it gets more interesting
<BenG83> or microwave stuff for eme communication
<t3st3r> I guess former are absorbed less by humans, but causes plenty of trouble for electronics
<BenG83> HF is mostly a problem for the local oscillators
<BenG83> e.g. the 24Mhz xtals for the SoC
<montjoie> embed-3d: http://sunxi.montjoie.ovh/cluster2.jpg an old photo before soldering
<KotCzarny> a63
<KotCzarny> they really made it o.O
<BenG83> oh wow A64

<maz> BenG83: Realtek. 'nuf said. FreeBSD still carries this comment: "The RealTek 8139 PCI NIC redefines the meaning of 'low end.'"
<BenG83> ;P
<KotCzarny> so bad it's good?
<BenG83> it would not be so bad if the RTL8211 could do loopback on the Ethernet side
<BenG83> then you could autotune the RGMII from userspace
<BenG83> but so it requires some host with iperf3 or sth

<willmore> Fuse everything...
<KotCzarny> lol
<KotCzarny> got pics?
hanni76 has joined #linux-sunxi
<willmore> No, but I can probably find the board. It was a TNC that I was powering from a large lead acid battery. The silly connectors they use for hooking radios up doesn't do a very good job of preventing shorts to the pins. One quick short to the metal case and *foof* goes the thing little trace meant to deliver a few mA for the microphone element.
<willmore> thin little...

<KotCzarny> well, electronics and shorts dont mix
<willmore> Nope, but use a fuse as a fuse, not a PCB trace.
vagrantc has joined #linux-sunxi
<t3st3r> Not each and every PCB track can handle full power supply current anyway. And if one installs "few ma" fuse into power supply rail it would fail.
chlorine has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<t3st3r> so isn't there still chance weak tracks would go before high-current fuse?
<willmore> Yes.
<KotCzarny> not before frying things they are connected to
<KotCzarny> :)
<willmore> it all depends on the details of the design.
