<igraltist>
what do i missing
<igraltist>
i have console=ttyS0,115200n for cmdline and enabled in inittab
<faLUCE>
hello. is orange pi zero good for browsing/youtube/playing videos ?
<KotCzarny>
browsing: simple pages
<KotCzarny>
videos: mpeg/hevc(8bit) yes, hevc(10bit) no
<KotCzarny>
youtube is tricky. although disabling disk cache in firefox helps greatly
<faLUCE>
KotCzarny: what is hevc 10 bit ?
<KotCzarny>
hevc == h.265
<faLUCE>
is hevc 8 bit h264 ?
<KotCzarny>
no, hevc is h.265
<KotCzarny>
but it comes with different profiles
<faLUCE>
so, for h264 is it good?
<KotCzarny>
yes, and for 8bit h265
<faLUCE>
thanks
<KotCzarny>
but small memory bites
<faLUCE>
for hevc10bit which is the minimum model I can buy?
<KotCzarny>
libreelec-h3 doesnt even want to support <1GB
<KotCzarny>
i guess H6 has, but best would be switching to better soc
<faLUCE>
KotCzarny: which one would you suggest? I need to connect this mobo to a projector, and use it for playing videos and browsing
<KotCzarny>
maybe chromebook with 3399
<KotCzarny>
:)
<faLUCE>
KotCzarny: I don't need a display
<KotCzarny>
you may try with opi0 at first, but biggest problem is small memory, which means sdcard will be the big slowdown
<Hellsenberg>
doesn't opi0 lack a video output? (other than composite)
<KotCzarny>
bbl

yup, that's a showstopper

I need hdmi... I have to connect it to a projector

there's larger orange pis with HDMI
<Hellsenberg>
what resolution do you use?

1080p

<MoeIcenowy>
e.g. consider OPi One/Lite
<MoeIcenowy>
they have HDMI

@KotCzarny and @faLUCE, for HDR and 10bit HEVC playback, especially on 60fps, Allwinner H6 outperform Rockchip RK3399 :-)
<KotCzarny>
erm, you have to keep stable 60fps, if rk3399 is able to do that, they are equal ;)
nashpa has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
<tllim>
^^^ RK3399 only can handles up to 4Kp30 on HDR playback, H6 can handles up to 4Kp60 HDR playback
<KotCzarny>
now.. how about software support for the decoder? :0
<tllim>
H6 has V4L2 driver, but RK3399 currently still lacking unless hack into Chrome.
<tllim>
^^^ H6 one still WIP, check with jernej and kwiboo
<KotCzarny>
unbelievable, cheap allwinner chip being superior to heavyweight one
<tllim>
^^^ then believe it :-)

<KotCzarny>
anyway, offtopic a bit, when do preorders for pinephone start?
<tllim>
Q4 if samples able to release on early August
<KotCzarny>
thanks
<MoeIcenowy>
KotCzarny: RK3399 is just old
<KotCzarny>
MoeIcenowy: H6 is also old
<MoeIcenowy>
just for age, H6 is quite younger than RK3399
<MoeIcenowy>
it just come with old ARM core

The upcoming AW chip may not outperformed H6, just has modern spec such as MALI G class GPU
<tllim>
Overall, H6 has the best A53 performance on this class of SoC. However, get a bad reputation due to PCIe cannot mainlining (not broken, still usable and good performance on PCIe-SATA interfacing)..
<KotCzarny>
which is sad, because it would rock as a nas board
<tllim>
actually it can due to good CPU performance and also the USB3 performance is also good
ganbold has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<KotCzarny>
all it takes is to someone port few drivers
<KotCzarny>
but who would do it?
<montjoie>
for H6 is someone can add network to uboot, I will love it
<tllim>
icenowy already contribute a lot on H6 mainlining work.
<tllim>
overall H6 mainline is in good shape.
<tllim>
Thanks to jernej, kwiboo, armstrong and Libreelec folks, H6 AV driver is progressing well. Callabora folks also involve on Panfrost for MALI T-720 and hopefully will have an update soon.

<jernej>
yep, there is demo image which supports 10-bit HEVC HDR playback, albeit in 8-bit due to missing 10-bit support in DRM driver, but still...
<jernej>
for PineH64
<jernej>
now we have to mainline that, which will take plenty of time
<tllim>
^^^ thanks jernej :-)
<willmore>
jernej, is that based off of the baylibre work?
<jernej>
what?
<jernej>
baylibre works on amlogic, right?
<willmore>
Sorry, wrong brain cell... Bootlin?
<jernej>
if you mean VPU part, then yes, with my additions, like 10-bit decoding
<jernej>
but there is also collaboration with folks from Baylibre
<jernej>
mostly on HDMI stuff
<willmore>
Yep, VPU work. Nice to see everyone working together.
<jernej>
it turns out that Amlogic, Allwinner and Rockhip all uses DW HDMI controllers with similar configurations
<willmore>
Yay? :)
<willmore>
$25 to anyone to gets the kernel to rename the DW IP based drivers to something more generic like DW_something.
<jernej>
I just want to say code sharing is possible
JohnDoe0 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jernej>
DW HDMI bridge driver is properly named :)
<willmore>
That makes the development harder, but makes the final code better. Sorry that causes you extra work.
<willmore>
Yeah, one down.
<Hellsenberg>
willmore: DW as in DesignWare?
<jernej>
yes
<willmore>
That is correct, Hellsenberg
<Hellsenberg>
I think even Intel uses their SIP blocks
<xcko>
so I added the anx6345 patch to linux-5.2-rc4 and the sun4i-drm driver gets loaded correctly, and I can use the modesetting driver. Is there anything else I can do to improve drawing performance on the olimex teres? (other out of tree drivers?) I haven't upgraded to mesa 19.1 for lima support yet but I will soon.
<anarsoul>
xcko: Nope. And lima won't accelerate much for you since it can't do glamor atm
<xcko>
dang.

looks like I'm okay, thanks for the tip [ 45.574] (II) modeset(0): Refusing to try glamor on llvmpipe
<anarsoul>
then it should be mostly OK (at least it's OK on pinebook)
<anarsoul>
xfce is pretty smooth
<anarsoul>
KDE is acceptable if you set QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software
<xcko>
I'm using dwm, I just wish drawing events were a little faster - less latency when opening new term windows or scrolling quickly
<xcko>
does changing the "kmsdev" option from /dev/dri/card0 to a different value have any impact? I see that I have several options in /dev/dri/*
<anarsoul>
I doubt it
<xcko>
is there a preferred method for testing graphic performance? maybe that's too broad of a question. glxgears gets 44fps, is that similar to the pinebook?
<anarsoul>
xcko: you've got sw GL, so glxgears (and any other GL benchmark) is useless
<xcko>
that makes sense. I'll check against the armbian benchmarks, see what they test for
